Sure, it’s definitely only gay men who do that. I know this because I too have slumbered peacefully under a rock for the past decade. That is what some straight men think as ridicolous as it is. I personally have not really noticed it either... but Anders was still rather quick on the note. He jumped on you? Oh I would like to see that! And why he didn't "jump" on my Hawke (only showed his interst). Exaggeration Didn't even get to throw my own first little teasing flirt in before it all started and already I had to disappoint the poor Anders, just because I was moderately nice to him. I suppose I understand how girls now feel with all those 'nice guys'. By the way, what about Isabela's and Merrill's visit? My Hawke was shocked! I could be mistaken, but don't they first visit you in your new home after the deep roads expedition? And if I am not mistaken the chatter is almost always just friendly chatter rather than flirtatious... well, unless it is Isabella but she does make her fondness of sex and fooling around rather known, how I miss my lovely rivaini. Or do they only visit if you actually flirted with them? It has been a long time since I last played DA2... believe it or not, DA2 were actually the first DA game I played. Guilty as charged.

Nope. I roll my eyes a little at the male/male lines that were obviously put in to protect the delicate sensibilities of The Straights. Huh, weird. And here I have noticed that the straight men were the only ones hating the fact that Anders represented the very thing they assumed gay men would be. Men who would just throw themselves at you like a wild dog as soon as they note that they are attracted to you, no flirtatious hint needed, just a wild, sudden bounce onto you. That seems a little hyperbolic, no? I always find this issue with Anders to be confusing. People go on and on about how important it is for the character to be believable and that "good writing" should trump any concerns around romance content. Until you get to Anders. He's a hyper-passionate, obsessed man. He hits on you and you turn him down. How would you like a hyper-passionate, obsessed guy to react? A realistic reaction for Anders would be to get all annoyed and for it to have a negative affect on your relationship. That's exactly how I would expect him to react. But when that happens, people get annoyed because it doesn't give them the outcome that they want. Let alone forgetting that you can more than make up for that rivalry point in the very same conversation and even get through that conversation without taking any rivalry hits if you choose a certain set of dialogue. It's just seems to fly in the face of "realistic characterisation" being the most important part of the writing process. Sure, it’s definitely only gay men who do that. I know this because I too have slumbered peacefully under a rock for the past decade. Yeah, I have had to fight off Ashley, Liara, and Leliana out of fear of getting ninjamanced. And Isabela hits on the PC regardless of your interest in her, of course. Anders just gets a bad rep because he is one of the only male characters to do it to a male PC without going through the "Is it okay if I hit on you, sir?" dialogue. So here’s a follow up question for the thread: Which was your single favorite romance option in a BioWare game and why? And, if the character is bisexual, what gender was your PC? For me, it was Kaidan with MShep, which I explained a few pages earlier. A major character in the story; emotional and believable dialogue; they weren’t afraid to show genuine affection between two men (likely because it was dialogue written for FemShep, but, hey, I’ll take what I can get); and on a superficial level, he’s hot and his voice is sexy. This will be no surprise to anyone, but my single favorite romance option is Josephine. I love everything about her character and romance and it means more to me than that since on a personal level it was the first time I could have a LI and romance that represents me and have the devs fully support that. As for what gender I was, I played as my own as a self-insert.Coy. Assuming that I know your real life gender identity. LOL.

Anders is my favorite romance and Zev is second, so I thought this also applied to me. lol I think Anders is the only bi romance that's actually better if you romance him as a guy. He tells a guy about Karl and seems more open quicker than with a female character. Someone said a while back that his writer was encouraged to make him less romantic with men and it seems like if anything she just leaned in to spite them lmao. Zev was a hot mess with some of his writing. I try to avoid the cringy dialogs written to make his bisexuality less impactful. It's obvious he was written for straight women to the point he outright says they're his first choice. I'm glad Gaider gave Anders to someone else in DA2, because honestly I hated his romances. He wrote all three of his m/m available romances as the same "aloof man learns to love" trope and I'm so over that storyline. He also seems way more queasy about writing gay romances, but I just feel sad that he feels he needs to censor and justify gay existence. It's more personal and I get the feeling he has an added layer of feeling like he has to censor and justify himself as a gay writer, which is sad. Gaider is a sassy bitch, as I know from having been personally sassed by him more than once, though, so maybe I'm reading in context that's not there. lol The amount of people I still see dubbing him king SJW despite his history of being distinctly something else just makes me suspect even he doesn't have that thick of skin.

Aye, as I noted, it was indeed an exaggeration, I at the very least would have expected more of a flirtatious banter back and forth before suddenly being hit like that. It was just "Oh shit, you are a fairly nice dude, let me get in real close and mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" But then again, I am a moderate flirter in real, I'd expect atleast some glances back and forth indicating mutual interest. This is obviously hard to do in a video game, so it needs to be portrayed through banter before hitting like that. I was surprisingly okay with Zevran and Isabella though.

You don’t think you love someone, you think you’re being cool about it, then suddenly all at once you realize that you love them very much and it’s a little shocking. ...is this not how everyone experiences love? How does it evolve for other people?

Anders misunderstood a situation, this isn't a big sin. And his reaction of Hawke's answer is very believable. He's passionate, and not really thinks before speaks (just see, how he behaves even in front of the Templars). This is why I love his character. And i think, he rather angry at himself, but perhaps it just me. But still: he's a very living character. People always want a believable, living valid character, and when they got it, they hate it. I don't get people. Isabela gives a lot of rivalry, if Hawke refuse her when she visits him. (True, I think myHawke once flirted with her. It was just a little nothing. Once. – Anders doesn't visit Hawke without invitation.) You know, I just very tired about that I read not once on the forums: "that dirty bastard jumped on my straight alpha male (I'll kill him) – so to avoid it, I made a sexy chick, who banged with every sexy chick in the game..."

Probably did not help that you were also given a flirt option right at that moment. So it was also completely unexpected because it had never happened before, and nor do I think it should happen unless you the player somehow initiates it. I know some want the NPC romanceable to court the player, but perhaps that should happen after flirtatious banter, not before. Video games are not real, as I have already said, we can hardly have a proper, realistic dialogue in a video game in this moment. So sticking to having the player initiate the flirtatious banter may still be the very best option. But again, the NPC courting the player character could still happen without the NPC having to initiate the entire romance.

Beside not telling female Hawke about Karl, he also keeps her at arms length, while treating male Hawke more like an equal ("I won’t let anyone lock me up again, not even you, sweetheart", no such line for male Hawke). There are a few scenes, where he tells f!Hawke that she should stay away, versus just telling m!Hawke, what is troubling him.

Zev has his weirdness about not wanting to say the earring means something and then he just cuts you off for a while at one point. Fenris freaks out and nopes out literally for years. At least the two of them lean hard into commitment and openness afterwards, though. Dorian doesn't pull back, but he also never really leans in. I never feel like Dorian's romance is complete, since it ends with tension and him leaving after springing it last second. I like openness in relationships. I like when people say what they feel and don't childishly run away from their feelings. If it's a teens to early twenties couple, I think some haven't grown into being comfortable with themselves, but as adults I expect more emotional security.

It's sad Hepler left and more sad that she got a ton of abuse before she did. I would have loved to see more romances from her.

Under that scruffy exterior, I think you've got a bit of a soft heart, yourself. I'm sorry, I shouldn't presume. Am I making you uncomfortable?" That's the lightest way to hit on someone, with that bonus "is the gay making you uncomfortable" I hope BW won't come back to. It's not like he said Hawke should ogle his ass, like Isabela...

Sure, Dorian uses coded language like talking about the drapes or saying he hates the Inquisitor, but he makes it really obvious what he’s actually saying, and it’s all a bit playful. He’a putting on a mask, but he’s letting the Inquisitor watch him put it on. Same with Zevran and the earring — it’s really obvious what message he’s conveying, and it’s not muddled by the fact that he doesn’t use words to say it.

It wasn't hostile or directed at anyone, just an offhand remark in an interview. There were definitely non-gender specific critiques of the comment, but also a massive amount that were just "this is why women ruin gaming".

My preferred love interest in BioWare games: Mass Effect - Liara (always Liara) / Peebee (is this an Asari thing going on here?) Dragon Age - Leliana / Merrill / Sera-and-Josie-and-the Iron Bull. Invariably play as a female protagonist, that's how I like to roleplay. (and I think I mentioned Lace Harding for next time, yes?)

I think the original interview was from 2006, so someone did alot of rummaging to find it and bring it to light in 2012. The harrasment also went after her kids, saying it would be better they were dead then have her as a mother. It was horrible.

I just don't really enjoy romances with that kind of obfuscation. I don't think they're always inherently wrong in isolation and it's just a matter of subjectI've taste if that's what you're into, but I don't personally enjoy them and a large number of romances for m/m have followed the same pattern, so I hope they'll go another direction with at least one option next time.

Anders says "Well. Not sure if Isabella actually told you to ogle her ass. She certainly did play with the idea of Hawke not minding to watch her back though with a short statement: "I bet..." though. She said basically she wished you could skip combat the way you can skip cut scenes and dialog, since the story is what was important to her about games. It wasn't hostile or directed at anyone, just an offhand remark in an interview. There were definitely non-gender specific critics of the comment, but also a massive amount that were just "this is why women ruin gaming". That remark does seem rather silly considering we already do have media which tells story without any involvement of 'combat mechanics' in them already, called movies and books. But I suppose she wants something more akin to The Walking Dead games, and other similar kinds of games. But I agree, that is a rather ridicolous thing for people to get upset about, geez. Atleast get upset if it was suggested that this be put into the Dragon Age games

If you had to narrow it to one, which would you say is your favorite and why? It was always Liara. Most games, longest journey.

My fav romance from BioWare is Malavai Quinn from the Sith Warrior class in SWTOR. I wouldn't go into too much cus "SPOILERS" but I love how differential he is, but has his own opinions and his own choices. I feel he is a very complex character. Loyal to a fault, that he will actually harm himself and chose a painful choice, then do what he actually wants. Still think it's a shame he's not bi, only straight, as I still feel he'd work very well for bi.

It's sad Hepler left and more sad that she got a ton of abuse before she did. I would have loved to see more romances from her. Yeah, it's a shame. The romance written by her and whoever did Kaidan's were the only I really enjoyed so far, so it would have been nice to see more of her work... Harrased by fans for being a woman? They accused her of pushing progressive ideas and destroying the franchise, in parts because of the Anders romance. They almost lynched her after she said a skip dialogue button, but for combat, is something she'd enjoy, because she doesn't have much time and still wants to experience the story. A perfectly sane thing to say for someone, who's not designing combat, but writing the story. I think one of the BW writers said she quit after the death threats started to accumulate.

I was talking about that. I was accepting a mission, not flirting back and forth. Not sure how this is different from Anders'. His flirt can be avoided and he can be told no, at least.
