I'm happy Hawke has a pretty concrete excuse why Anders can't be there in Inquisition. I feel like it's easily the best one and probably the only explanation why a past PC had to be away from their LI that's ever not sounded mostly like an excuse for game mechanics. lol

I actually really liked the excuses for Fenris, Anders, and Merrill. Isabela's came off as a little half-assed but not out of character (it was extra weird because she helps the Inquisition in MP). But Fenris would get himself killed trying to protect Hawke from the ancient darkspawn magister horror, Anders was vulnerable to the false Calling and probably a wanted man, and Merrill was helping the Kirkwall alienage rebuild. Speaking of.... I liked the way the Warden's romance was handled in Inquisition. Except Zevran, who gets mentioned in a letter and that's it. His unromanced war table cameo is so much better! I also liked that Morrigan was like, "uhh... that's none of your business but ok. *proceeds to spill all her relationship secrets*"

I feel like it just isn't that respectful to him, to his intelligence or his ability as a fighter. Hawke already fought Corypheus with Fenris once. He went through so much with him. It just feels off after that for the reason to be that Hawke doesn't believe Fenris can handle himself. If I were Fenris, I'd feel hurt and insulted that Hawke didnt feel we were both safer having each other's backs than apart.

To me it worked, because it struck me as the sort of dumbass impulsive thing my purple Hawke would do, and I envisioned Fenris showing up at Skyhold or Weisshaupt or wherever suitably pissed while Hawke is suitably contrite. I felt it was less, "Fenris can't handle himself" and more, "Fenris literally said he can't bear the thought of living without me, oh no I've gotta keep him safe!! 😱" I know that a lot of people didn't like it, though.

There were two questions, what is your favorite romance and why, as well as what kinda of Straight Romance I would want. Part 1 Favorite Romances are, ranked in Order: 1. Fenris 2. Zevran 3. Alistair 4. Cullen What I liked about Alistair was his rose, and speeches, and finally his final confession of love and asking to be intimate. he made it clear that I was valuable to him, that he was into me. I am super into that. What I liked about Zevran is getting to know him had value. Part of what started me falling for him was actually watching content that I would never have seen. A romanced Zevran that then gets left for someone else in the group says he has to leave the group. Because he loves you too hard to watch you be with another. For his own mental health, he has to leave. Which is huge! Because he gained so much from being with you that he now has the self value to want to be alive and want to be happy even if it isn't with you, even if he didn't get that happy ending. Topically he comes off as a man whore, but he absolutely isn't. Underneath all that is an elf who wanted to belong and has hurt himself almost as much as the Crows hurt him. He tried to kill himself with your blade. Your kindness, just being a decent human being in a world of indecency, revived his spark. You made him believe in life again. And you didn't even have to bang him to do it, but such a path can some with such benefits. I also like how flirty he can be- the flirts never come off as insincere. he seems like the sort of person who once he's decided to commit to something, he commits all the way. And that bears out with his staying at your side no matter what. nothing will pull him away. Fenris, like Zevran, was also a second glance character. I didn't romance him my first game simply because he didn't show up at Hawke's mansion. I ended up having to kill him in Act III. When I played my second game, to rival romance Anders to punish him for hurting me so badly the first game, I did manage to sleep with Fenris in act II and patted myself on the back before jumping in on my Revenge Romance with Anders. It was in Act 3 where Fenris talked to Anders about the mage and I getting together that Fenris said something that made me do a double take. How if Anders ever hurt Hawke, he'd kill him. I was intrigued by this immensely. so my third game, I go to romance Fenris (all the way, not just banging him) and then Anders does that controlling scene where he bitches about whoever you got with that wasn't him by insulting them as people. And it's just amazing to me. All the things that had attracted me to Anders- his sweeping passionate obsession and pining that had lured me in so quickly in the first game was now this. This toxic childish mess of a man was trying to scrape into my good graces by tearing my loved ones down. the Childish demeaning of your long term friends and companions (the hypocrisy if it's Isabella you end up with, considering he slept with her too). Whereas Fenris, who still loves you in Act 3 if you get with Anders simply lets you go. This. Is. Beautiful. I love Fenris for being the sort of person who could love someone and still let them go. as a PS to that, from my early romantic teens I was super into Jane Eyre and being the woman who could make a grumpy man smile and happy, when with everyone else they would be an asshole (or just simply remorse, asshole not required). Fenris fills this so perfectly. HE's just perfect. I have never put myself into this position in a game, but I would never sacrifice a Fenris Romance Hawke because Fenris deserves every smile that only Hawke can give him. Then Cullen. I really really like Cullen. He's got it all- the looks, the voice, the quantity of content, the love of dogs, the passion, and the wedding scene. I think Alistair and Cullen suffer in the rankings because they don't need my love. They can go on to have well adjusted happy lives. They would be happier with me in them (obviously) but... it's just not the same. Or maybe it's that, they are what they are on the surface. There isn't a layer to peel back, there isn't a deeper inner person to uncover and be awed by. They wouldn't hurt themselves so you can be happy, by letting you find happiness with others. Of course, with the shitty soft locking of DAI, Cullen will never recognize you were with another person before him. And Alistair simply never brings it up again if you reject them, whereas Fenris and Zevran get a chance to express this. I romanced all of these people as Female except the "complete" romance with Fenris I was playing male. I was doing this fucked up Evil Hawke play through where Hawke was Dexter (the show about a serial murderer) and Fenris ended up being his Hannah in a rival romance. It was masterful how well this was supported. In the future, I will Friendmance him with a female mage hawke because I don't think there is any difference in the content of his romance and I prefer to play as my own gender.

So here’s a follow up question for the thread: Which was your single favorite romance option in a BioWare game and why? And, if the character is bisexual, what gender was your PC? For me, it was Kaidan with MShep, which I explained a few pages earlier. A major character in the story; emotional and believable dialogue; they weren’t afraid to show genuine affection between two men (likely because it was dialogue written for FemShep, but, hey, I’ll take what I can get); and on a superficial level, he’s hot and his voice is sexy. I'd also have to go for Kaidan, pretty much for the same reasons you, Dirk, and Davrin's boobs have. Kiadan's romance was the first time I had ever been able to experience a gay romance in a game, and it was just handled so well. Would I have romanced Kaidan in the first game? Of course! But I felt like the slow burn actually enhances the experience, with the two getting time to know each other and go through all these experiences together before finally becoming a couple. I just love the adorable date on the Citadel where Kaidan confesses his feelings for Shepard, it's just such a sweet confession paired with the music and Presidium setting. This, to me, is much better than just jumping onto each other in the first game because they might die. Couple this with the little romantic moments in the game (the banter about sleepy Kaidan, the "you're real enough for me" line, "don't leave me behind" at the end) and the entire Citadel DLC experience, it just feels like such a fulfilling romance where two men just happen to fall in love and care for each other deeply across three games. The Mass Effect games came into my life at a time when I really needed them. They helped me get through a lot thanks to being able to escape into an amazing fictional world where I could go on grand adventures with friends I made along the way. The fact that I was able to go through these games as a gay man with a bisexual male squadmate that was an important part of the plot and an amazing romance really gave me hope that someday things would be better and managed to put a smile on my face. None of the other romances have come close to rivaling Kaidan's for me.
I'm very conflicted on whether to place Anders or Reyes at second place though (through a m/m perspective) as I do love both characters and there are aspects I enjoy about the romances coupled with the problems.

Underneath all that is an elf who wanted to belong and has hurt himself almost as much as the Crows hurt him. He tried to kill himself with your blade. Your kindness, just being a decent human being in a world of indecency, revived his spark. You made him believe in life again. Warden: So you felt guilty? Zevran: I felt empty. I felt as if I was nothing. I felt as if [Rinna] had been nothing. You once asked why I wanted to leave the Crows. In truth, what I wanted was to die. What better way than to throw myself at one of the fabled Grey Wardens? I CRY LIKE A TITTYBABY EVERY TIME. 😭 "[The earring] has meant a lot to me, but so have... so has what you've done." I also appreciate that he's the only LI in DAO to ask how you're feeling, and then recites a crappy sex poem to make you laugh. ZEVRAN, KEEP ZEVRANING. 👍

This is one of the strong points of Cullen too- he asks how you're doing, it happens whether you're romancing him or not, but it was nice that he was willing to let you step off out of your leader role long enough to catch a breather and ask how you were doing. Iron Bull talks a big talk about letting you blow off steam, but I didn't want to blow off steam. I wanted someone to actually act like I was a "human being" and ask after my mental health. back to Zevran- everyone talks about how promiscuous he is when I see him as the most hardcore monogamous romantic. His heart has only ever belonged to one person at a time, and his body was under control by the Crows. Even his sleeping with his marks was, in a twisted way, his way of coping with the violence of a task I don't think he actually enjoyed. At least he showed them a good time before he killed them- he cherished that their last moments were not full of fear. If people realized that most of banter and talking was a mask, one he himself tries to believe in, I think they would see what I see. A precious little elven gem. But you gotta dig and not dismiss him out of hand.

What would I want in a straight romance... Part 2 - First, I'd like to say I don't care if my straight romance is bisexual/pansexual. Who they've fucked before me and who they find sexually appealing in a casual way is irrelevant to my evaluation of their character. I also don't care if they have been promiscuous or not. I've enjoyed the "virgins" and the "sluts" but what both versions of my favorites had in common is that when they gave you their heart, they gave it all the way. That's the part that mattered, not how many notches in the bed post.
- I'm not into folks who sleep with me and only then are honest about their evilness/past evilness. So as much as I love Blackwall's drama, he should have kept his dick in his pants until after the big reveal. He definitely shouldn't have left me naked in a barn. Kissing without telling the whole truth is okay i.e. Reyes and Ryder's date and kiss.
- I am not into romances that leave for years and expect me to hold a torch for them the entire time they're gone. At least Fenris stayed in town, I can accept that version, because I can head cannon some morose longing and pining glances and a bit of angst. But Isabella and Solas both took off FOR YEARS and just no. The amount of effort I've had to put into making characters that would put up with this and not themselves be pathetic is too much effort.
- COMMUNICATION. Merril pushed off my Hawke's advances so much I didn't even know romancing her was happening. Then she comes crying to the mansion and I offer her comfort only to find out that this was her physical declaration of love (that I don't reciprocate) and she's running out the front door in tears. wtf, mate. While in the end I hate Anders, I adored that he gave you a heads up about coming to the mansion. you know, cuz just showing up in your bedroom doorway CAN be construed as a little creepy, stalkerish, or disrespectful. Fenris was in your Foyer when kissing happened that got carried to the bedroom, same for Merril, but Isabella has boundary issues and just shows up in your bedroom- Same for Iron Bull and Blackwall being your room when you don't even know they're there. Nothing says romance like a threat eh? I LOVE the "jealousy" conversations in DAO because it meant you got to have honest conversations, out loud, like adults, about what expectations each person had about the relationship you were in. I hate that DAI's soft locks took this sort of communication away. It made the relationships seem to occur in a vacuum. Blackwall's reveal was a HUGE event for the entire Inquisition but Cullen had nothing to say about my being in the liar's bed for 2/3 of the game. Really? no. Not to mention that Solas and Inky never discuss what they're doing, so you're in this weird fucked up limbo of, "are we a thing, or aren't we?" YET you're locked out of content/romances with others just because you kissed him. "I'll make no claims on you baby, you're a free bird, but also everyone will think we're an item, so you're cock blocked from here on out." Fuq you, Solas.
Traits I've liked: - Layers. It doesn't always have to be that Hard People turn out to have a soft squishy inside. The only moment Josephine ever really wowed me was her personal mission. She's talking the talk, being congenial and professional, and then makes a realization. Her whole demeanor changes to a sharp shrewd woman, one you could believe true danger could emanate from. I wish there had been more of this. I like that Zevran's easy breezy manner is both Front but also his base personality. He wouldn't have made it this far in his life if he couldn't compartmentalize and joke and reframe his life experiences. Sera comes off as super casual and violent, but you realize she has this fear that she's fighting, day in and day out as she works to help you. Hard people are soft, soft people are hard, crazy people are serious, and serious people are crazy. Eeyore wasn't siting on a cliff being depressed, he was enjoying the amazing rainbow. Subvert those expectations.
- Sacrifice: Romances that value your happiness above their own enough to let you go. I've never experienced it myself, but Alistair kills the archdemon in spite of your protestations.
- Humor in the Dark: Romances where you laugh together in the serious moments. Mmm, Fenris, being grumpy, angry, and then you smart off and he laughs and he's like, "come on, I'm trying to be a GRUMP and you won't let me" and you smile together, the small smile of true intimacy. Of getting each other.
So I guess I should now write out like, my dream romance of DA4.

Dream Romance: This got long. Layers: My male ancient elven romance will be a pansexual (romanceable by all races and genders) serious dude with an imperial yet down to earth attitude. By Imperial, I mean that he holds himself to high standards. Somewhat like Vivienne does or how Blackwall pretended to be. He will not be surprised that a modern Theodosian such as myself is not an idiotic immoral incompetent willfully ignorant person like he expected all modern Theodosians to be (looking at your Balcony speech, Solas, cuz fuq you.) And that's why he's down to earth- ya, he woke up to stop Solas and preferred his Fade world to the real world and all that, but he doesn't come into my world with horrible misconceptions about my society because he judge people on a case by case basis instead of making insulting sweeping generalizations. I'd like him to be older than Solas, so even more ancient. I want him to have this sort of Ancient Vampire thing going on, where time has become a bit meaningless to him so he thinks in terms of the bigger longer picture. He doesn't romanticize what the ancient elves used to be. That was that time, and now elves are this other thing, but so long as the world keeps on rolling, he's cool with it. I want him to be pretty as fuck and I want him to have hair on his head. I kind of want him to be anti nonsense so like, if I wanted to play a Sera like character, I'm cracking his serious habit and introducing some fun. He's not uptight and stressed and angtsy, he's just so much in his head, I pull him out. All along he planned that, after stopping Solas, he'd return back to Uthenara. But falling for you, he'll bring up this plan and how he's not so set to do so anymore, if you're into it that is.
So here we got some layers, a lot of distinct factors that makes him quite different some Solas, and the dynamic I like of making a serious man smile unexpectedly. As well as communication about one's plans for their life and how those plans may change if you're involved, so a conversation about whether you're an item happens (communication).
I don't know where the Sacrifice could come in. He would be healthy enough to care that you went to someone else but let you go. It could be that one of the ways to take out Solas is someone of his own ilk and time would have to kamikaze himself to get rid of Solas. That is why he woke up after all. But will you let him do it?
Edit Add: You know how like the Ents in Lord of the Rings took a month to come to a decision about saving the world? Like someone that removed from the immediacy of it all. That's why he didn't wake up same time as Solas. He took a couple years to come to the decision that Solas' plan didn't jibe with his vision of how life should go on uninterrupted.
Edit Add 2: Being affectionate with you is not HUGE DEAL TM. IF he likes you, he will tell you. If he kisses you, he won't talk about how he shouldn't have.
Edit Add 3: There will be hand holding before the kiss Like Cass got with male Inky, damn it. Preferably there will be an accidental date like we got with Cullen and the Chess game. An open relationship would be a thing he's cool with, because he has no strong feelings about keeping you to himself forever. There was this show on I really liked where humans had lived hundreds of years with cloning and like, a computer program of literally all your memories in the base of your skull. There was a power couple that absolutely loved each other that still banged other people as the urge took them that they kept on the down low. When you live for millenia, you don't get greedy. So if you say monogamy, he's cool with it. but if you say, lets have a sexually open relationship, he's cool with that too.
Edit add 4: Ooo, like the moment when you're like feeling depressed about how things are going, and you say something accusatory like, "you've lived forever and your backup plan is Uthenara and it all doesn't really matter to you like it matters to me cuz you're so above it" and then he grabs you all romantic and is like, "Light of my life, that may have been true before I met you. But now that I've met you, all of this is more urgent and real to me. It's more than just stopping Solas from reversing the natural march of progress. Now it's about you, and being with you. And the friends I've made, I want them to be happy too."
Swoon.

Speaking of opposite-sex relationships, one thing I REALLY loved about Garrus's romance was that it didn't feel heavily gender-stereotyped. Like, you were best friends, battle buddies, then figured out you had a physical connection... but even though Garrus admires Shep, romance-wise he's not putting her on a pedestal. It's part of the reason I'm reluctant to romance Blackwall or Cullen or Sebastian (and seeeeveral others in other games), just 'cause I don't like LIs "milady-ing" my character. And I don't mean that hyperbolically, I'm just not into the Lady and Knight dynamic where the guy treats the woman like she doesn't poop (though I would love to see a gender-swapped version or a f/f or m/m version for variety's sake if nothing else). Also, unrelated to the above but I loved Vetra SO MUCH, I only wish she had more content. Her romance felt a bit peripheral and short compared to Jaal, Cora, etc. (Though not as much as Gil or Suvi, cough cough.) I'd die for a qunari Vetra.

Those mods add so much romance to the "romance" that we actually got. Especially touching is the commitment scene. I cried because I was so moved.

Where are you from??? We say "titty baby" here, too, and I've never heard anyone else say that!! xD Haha! I'm from Texas - I believe you're next door, right? Maybe it's a southern thing. 😉 You know what they say. Everything's Titter in Texas.

It's part of the reason I'm reluctant to romance Blackwall or Cullen and Sebastian (and seeeeveral others in other games), just 'cause I don't like LIs "milady-ing" my character. And I don't mean that hyperbolically, I'm just not into the Lady and Knight dynamic where the guy treats the woman like she doesn't poop (though I would love to see a gender-swapped version or a f/f or m/f version for variety's sake if nothing else). Main reason I coudln't finish my Blackwall unmodded romance. I felt like he treated my bad ass Carta boss like a damsel in distress. It bothered me. But bioWare f/m often play into this "strong man" and "sweet lady" dynamic that really turns me off. As m/m romances they're more interesting (with one man acting very romantic and chivalrous towards another, love it). Also notice in m/f romances I feel that the girl who is bad ass at first turns into a sweet lady, i.e. Cassandra with her romance novels and love of romance. BioWare need to get off their stupid gender roles obsession.

Yeah that's pretty much what I tried to say about the Kaidan romance, so I definitely agree I love the slow burn. I like the full romance personally. Those mods add so much romance to the "romance" that we actually got. Especially touching is the commitment scene. I cried because I was so moved. I'm not sure I could play without the mod now. Granted, I DID play through the canon romance at least 3 times (whole trilogy) so I've gotten my fill. But you're right, the mod is something new, and it's lovely.

I object to that framing of Bioware.

Speaking of opposite-sex relationships, one thing I REALLY loved about Garrus's romance was that it didn't feel heavily gender-stereotyped. BioWare need to get off their stupid gender roles obsession. YES. Like, I'm not mad that that kind of romance exists (obviously there are a LOT of fans of that m/f dynamic) and I think Blackwall's romance arc is really intriguing in its own way, and I like him as a character, it's just on a purely personal level... that, as you said, "strong man/sweet lady" dynamic is such a turn off for me. I always feel like my character is about to teeter off a pedestal she didn't want to be on in the first place. And Blackwall himself is arguably one of the more down-to-earth of these types, I know that he sees the Inquisitor as a woman (and a person) and not just some angelic figure, but it stiiiill just feels strongly gendered in a way I'm not really into?? I don't know if I'm articulating this right lol. I don't even think it's just about Bioware having this or that expectation, because they subvert it in other romances, I just kind of shy away from this particular version.

I'd prefer if both folks in the romance had their low moments where they were bouyed up by the other. I liked how in MAss Effect 3, I could RP someone really breaking under the stress. It'd be nice to stress out, and be comforted. But then the other person ALSO have a moment of stress that I could comfort them. Want it to go both ways.
