since I was dragged in here again friendly reminder that human gay KISA is long overdue Me too, thanks! hmm I would not mind gay KISA from other race either [snip] 1. I'm not a fan of sex scenes in games, and prefer fade-to-black. I think this is for a couple of reasons: -- I exist somewhere on the ace spectrum, so I just generally dislike sex scenes. -- I prefer a degree of ambiguity in role-play. I think my favorite sex scene in a BioWare game to date was w/ Isabela in DA2. Wild foreplay, cut to the post-coital intimate conversation. I also really enjoy the ambiguity inherent in DAI's Josie romance - very loving and intimate, with an amount of ambiguity that allowed me to headcanon the rest. [snip] What do you think about having choices when it comes to "culmination" scenes? Like having the following choices your character can choose: 1) A scene that is obvious that no sex occurs 2) A sex scene 3) A fade-to-back scene where it's ambiguous So far I like the idea of giving us choices to role play how these scenes go. But I guess that that might require too much effort from Bioware. 🤔 I agree that it's probably too much for BioWare to do (first thing they scream is "RESOURCES!!!" when we request anything romance-related). But I personally would like this very much. I would probably never choose the sex scene b/c like OP I really have no desire to see that. But some of my character are very sexual so I'd definitely like to RP them as being physically intimate with their lovers. Others aren't, so, that'd be cool, too. All three would be great options to have.

For some romances that would be ideal, though I do think some romances if it fits the character should only have Option 1 or Option 2. Maybe an option to be more explicit or ambiguous with those options. For example even though I don't like sex scenes, some character's romances wouldn't work without it like for example Morrigan.

To make it a bit simpler, how about they just give us some romantic intimate conversation and/or cuddle scene where the player is given the option to either proceed into a sex scene or end it (the scene, not the romance) by fading out on the kanoodling? I would think that could go a long way toward giving everyone what they'd like.

Offhand, I can't think of any other situation where sex is really required, and that dark ritual business was a pretty unique one-off.

And likewise the other way if they ever wanted to created an explicitly Ace character or if they didn't want sex for others reasons, like Sebastian's vow of chastity.

And I think there's a valid point to be made about whether Isabela could fall for someone whose ugly she's never bumped. So - it might not work for every LI they'd ever design, but could probably work for most of them, no?

As I said, I think your idea if BioWare was able to put that much resources into it would be great for most of the LIs. To put numbers to it, let’s say they do 8 romances next game like in DAI. I imagine a good collection would be a couple without sex, a couple with sex, and the other four doing what you suggest. That allows a variety of characters and stories to exist as well as give everyone options on this aspect of romances.

The idea put forth by Dirk would be, since it sets 3 distinct statuses of the relationship, whereas mine essentially makes sex scenes skippable and gives you a fade-out.

I accidentally mixed up your post and their post in my head when writing that. Apologies. I would still like for there to be options where it is explicitly non-sexual though, since overall the scene being ambiguous tends to lean towards the romance still being written as sexual. A few do a good job at allowing it to be either, but most of the time due to dialogue through the rest of the game it is clear that sex still happened. For example in MEA Jaal had a "no sex" route that faded to black like you suggest, but immediately afterwards there are conversations about your sex with him.

Yeah, see, I would opt to not have conversations that specifically reference sex, just the romantic relationship. But if they're going to write and record such conversations, they could set a flag for whether the player chose the sex scene, and then not play those conversations for those who chose to avoid the sex scene. I dunno. It just strikes me as a way to provide more options at minimum cost.

Frankly, I find that to be the most palatable way to showcase any in-game relationship becoming intimate. Video game sex scenes are not and have never been anything other than awkward, and they only get more so as the games age. A tasteful skip from the characters gleefully jumping into each others' arms to them snuggled up in bed with adorable pillow talk dialogue would more than suffice. With all the free porn in circulation, even in lieu of actual experience, there's no excuse not to be able to imagine everything in-between without silly and thoroughly un-sexy animations and sugar-sweet background music to paint the picture. I've always found the DA series particularly full of headcanon and fanfiction opportunity anyway, why should sex be the point at which everything must be made explicit and concrete with nothing left to player imagination? By the way, can someone explain to me what "KISA" refers to?

Hmm. It wouldn't make sense four games into the DA series, but someday it would be cool to play a quasi-medieval RPG where you actually had to bargain with livestock or other resources for a woman's hand in marriage to offset the workforce her family household would lose. And where, in the absence of the pill, the only way to reliably limit untenable population growth followed by mass starvation would be to ruthlessly control who women spent time with from puberty to menopause. Now THAT would be "dark fantasy".
Not saying that those mechanisms need revival in the immediate future, but epic romantic drama is hard to find in settings with barely any sexual protocol whatsoever. Romance feeds off of difficulty and obstacles. It would be hard to get excited about Romeo and Juliet if one could have just parked outside the other's residence to arrange a date.

Oh? I've always found fantasy RPGs more interesting and compelling when they explore themes and plots and situations that are recognizably true to reality and humanity. And those are pretty damn dark, and they don't get lighter the deeper you go into them. And the lighter and more divorced from how people actually think and work they are, the more superficial and boring they feel. And as you say, women are treated like property all over the world. Turning off the news and focusing on light-hearted video games that reject the reality might not be the most constructive thing to do about that, if it's a priority to you.

Wow I want to play a video game where women were oppressed as fuck just like the good ole days #MAGA like wtf dude lol What? So far as we know, our ancestors lived like that for the better parts of hundreds of thousands of years. I happen to like history. There's a lot to learn about yourself and society there. I like to imagine how people have thought about the world throughout the ages, the kinds of conditions they endured under, the kinds of dangers and risks and pressures they faced just going about life, so I can feel properly grateful and realistic about what we are today. Which is why I think an RPG actually exploring those themes instead of dancing around them would be cool. It's not like anyone would be oppressed in the making of the damn game. And I'm not American. And quite thankful for it. I'm more partial to a stylish sixpence to hide Grandad's hair genes than silly red caps with inane slogans.

What do you think about having choices when it comes to "culmination" scenes? Like having the following choices your character can choose: 1) A scene that is obvious that no sex occurs 2) A sex scene 3) A fade-to-back scene where it's ambiguous ME:A's Cora comes with options 1 and 2, doesn't she? How could case 3 be implemented on the dialog wheel?

Turning off the news and focusing on light-hearted video games that reject the reality might not be the most constructive thing to do about that, if it's a priority to you. On the contrary, I think making and supporting speculative fiction that posits an alternative, that dares to claim that things could be OTHERWISE, is far more constructive, and interesting, than creating a game that indulges men who wish they could literally purchase women like cattle. I also think the term "dark" has been abused into utter meaninglessness. Whenever anybody uses it, all they really mean is that it appeals to their personal taste. As for being "recognizably true to reality and humanity", well, you have a pretty low opinion of humanity. Many people might say, for instance, that the netflix show, The Dragon Prince, is NOT "dark", and thus is of low quality. Most likely because it features child protagonists, and dares to imagine a world where women, people of colour, people with disabilities, queer people, and people who fit into two or more of these categories simultaneously, can be generals, mighty wizards, and even royalty. Also probably because it dares to assert, as its central premise, that bigotry can be overcome, if only the effort is made. There is plenty of "dark" in the show. Bigotry, betrayal and deceit, assassination, and a form of magic that requires its practitioners to not just draw blood, but to kill, for any and every spell, no matter how minor. But because these things are happening to children and minorites, some will say that it somehow ceases to be dark or compelling television, and instead becomes poorly-written SJW pandering. Or thay because women are respected and not routinely raped, that it is unrealistic or absurd. I think it is absurd to claim that humanity HAD to turn out the way it did, that we could never have been any different, that our world could never have been any different. Bigotry and hate aren't innate to humanity. They are learned behaviours. And media, particularly speculative fiction, can speak just as much to our reality and humanity by showing us alternate paths and daring us to do better, as it can by leveraging the worst parts of us for cheap entertainment value.

And where, in the absence of the pill, the only way to reliably limit untenable population growth followed by mass starvation would be to ruthlessly control who women spent time with from puberty to menopause. Where on earth did you get the idea that this was for population control?

What do you think about having choices when it comes to "culmination" scenes? Like having the following choices your character can choose: 1) A scene that is obvious that no sex occurs 2) A sex scene 3) A fade-to-back scene where it's ambiguous ME:A's Cora comes with options 1 and 2, doesn't she? How could case 3 be implemented on the dialog wheel? Yes. During her romance scene, you can either choose the sex route that leads to a sex scene followed by pillow talk, or you can choose the no sex route that leads to the romance scene instead having therm stargaze and cuddle until she falls asleep against Scott.

It would be pretty anachronistic actually, lots of ancient societies were pretty chill about taking care of unwanted pregnancies. Even ones we might now consider to be extremely pious, like the Puritans in the US. The hangups around that mostly started when doctors wanted to take over some of midwives’ market share, so they pushed for “safety regulations” on everything related to pregnancy, so more of that stuff would have to be pushed into hospitals. That discussion ended up sparking off discussions in fundamentalist religious communities, and it turned out to be such an effective wedge issue that the debate exists to this day. Just because something is dark doesn’t make it realistic. And in this particular case, it would frame the situation in a really disingenuous way, as if this whole debate is some inevitable phase of all early societies rather than being a recent, and pretty cynical, political invention.
