And directly opposing her viewpoints with mockery or just straight out disagreement would grant disapproval.(Her being a tevinter mage and having a fondness of manipulation and a silver-tongue) Give an option to have a totally toxic rival romance option and I'd be all over her too.

I just found some catharsis in rivaling Anders after his gaslighting me on the Friendship path. Although I would definitely not boink someone I constantly argued with in real life, it's a perpetuated fantasy romance in lots of media and I enjoy it for what it is.

Dragon Age hasn't delivered a gay romance I really love yet. I appreciate all of them, but none of them are really like, YES I LOVE THIS AHH THIS IS MY JAM!!! Mass Effect was a total fail until Jaal came out of the closet, but I can't really count him because of it and ME:A was a complete bust anyway. I like being obsessed with one specific character. I like being a nerd about a character, like a kpop fangirl/boy towards their bias. I'm hoping for a character like that for DA4, someone who will sweep me off my goddamn feet! Yeah, Dragon Age hasn't had the best track record for me either. It's interesting because I see it as better than ME in most ways in this regard, but I tend to like the guys that we are given (even if the romance content is lacking or unfulfilling) better. Kaidan, Gil, and Steve are my three favorite m/m options in Bioware games (in that order). I have major issues with all three of their romance storylines, but I like those characters (looks and personality) best. For DA, Dorian is my favorite, followed by Bull, and I suppose Anders would be next. Dorian is cute, but annoying. Bull is great in many ways, but I hate how masc-dom he is. Well not how he's masc-dom, but how he insists on it. Like, "I won't romance you unless you let me dominate you." It's not my style, per se. It's not bad, but it's not my favorite. Wish the Inquisitor could have a little agency here; feels a little to 50 Shades for me. And Anders is the worst (well, second worse after Zevran) but he is probably the most "plot relevant" of the m/m options and it's SUCH a good story. My canon Hawke romances him, but then exiles him (the betrayed lover thing). It's so good. But he's just the worst so it counterbalances the story. Fenris, Jaal, and Zevran are the worst three for me. Not interested in anything about any of them outside of Gideon Emory's voice. I mean the characters and romances I'd like to love are there, they are just locked out of my preference. It's just that I'm a militant gay, and I'm just looking out for that one gay I will devote my nerdism to. I said before but if Sera was a gay dude, hell yeah I wouldn't even ask for gay dudes in DA4 (okay that's kind of a lie but still). Or if Blackwall was open for dudes, I'd be really content and would be going to DA4 with extremely open minds and without many expectations or needs. It's a bit stupid and vain I guess, locking myself out like this, out of content I'd enjoy but hey, it's my dirty stinking vain life and i'll make things hard for myself if I want to!!!! No, I get it and tbh I don't think it's vain or stupid. I like Morrigan's romance but I'd sure like it better if I could romance her as a lady, alas, she's hetero so I rolled a dude for her. But there's that little bit of disconnect where it just doesn't feel the same as romancing Isabela or Sera, 'cause I'm playing this dude in their very heterosexual relationship. Lol. And even though I'm able to enjoy lots of other content for what it is - stepping into someone else's shoes and roleplaying - every time someone says there are ~toooo many~ gays or they couldn't take orders from a woman or w/e I'm just like OH YEAH?? I'm gonna make all these legendary heroes women. Or gay or bi. Or gay or bi women. Hell yeah! My canon world state has a gay dwarf warrior Warden, a gay sarcastic mage Hawke, and a gay KISA qunari Inquisitor. Be the change you want to see in the world! A young, beautiful tevinter mage who seeks to be a part of the upper echelon in the imperium. She'll at first use the main protagonist to somehow gather dirt, backstory material and what not so that she can blackmail others into allowing her a position within that 'upper echelon' in the imperium. But she'll gradually falls in love over the course of the game. Of course she likes a silver-tongue. She likes blackmailing. She does not mind slavery all too much. She'd have an immediate dislike for any race NOT human, but convertable. She generally like manipulation. She'd be a fairly good fit for a straight romance for men. I would LOVE to see more traditionally "villainous" companions. I know most of them are grey in some capacity, but they do tend to skew "good". I enjoy a villainous companion storyline as well. And directly opposing her viewpoints with mockery or just straight out disagreement would grant disapproval.(Her being a tevinter mage and having a fondness of manipulation and a silver-tongue) Give an option to have a totally toxic rival romance option and I'd be all over her too. I also wouldn't mind if the friendship/rivalry system comes back. I thought that was a clever way to provide variety in story arcs and still account for why the companions don't just up and leave after some time.

I just don't want opposing everything someone professes to believe in to mean the end of the relationship and the content. Well, from the description I gave of her. For the highest approval you would technically be disagreeing on everything. You'd just be better than her at wording. But hey, perhaps we get an ending story-sheet, where we are told that her encounter with the protagonist, depending on what dialogue was chosen, has started to reflect her stance on slavery and all that. Maybe she goes in even more for it, or perhaps she begins thinking that slavery might not be all that good and that crap.

I would LOVE to see more traditionally "villainous" companions. I know most of them are grey in some capacity, but they do tend to skew "good". I enjoy a villainous companion storyline as well. I just think that is the result of writers often not being able to come up with a good enough reason for a villanous character to actually give a crap about following the mostly heroic protagonist. That kinda takes the toxic out of it. What if she still remains a okay with it but is also a okay about it's downfall because she simply doesn't actually give a crap? It was a response to the fact that I described her and the protagonist as having opposing views at all levels, the a lot of approval route (If people go that route) It just seems far more applicable that if someone really "outsmarts" you, exposes your beliefs and pokes holes in it again and again, then you'd actually start reflecting on it. But yes, it could very be that she just ends up not really giving a crap, she might just fall so deeply in love that she'd just be with the protagonist.

I thought that was a clever way to provide variety in story arcs and still account for why the companions don't just up and leave after some time. I saw it as the opposite. The Friendship/Rivalry system made no sense why the DA2 companions stuck around let alone romances.

round let alone romances. Just because people should try to have a healthy loving relationship with people doesn't mean that they do so. Part of the reason I now dislike Anders is because his relationship style in act 3 reminds me distinctly of the relationships I had prior to the age of 23. Just like Briala and Celene loving each other is toxic, it doesn't mean it is not reflective of a reality.

He gaslights you if you ask a question. The only happy Garret/Anders situation that is happening is one where Garret never questions Anders.

This is kind of interesting if they made her more of a grey character and not to the extreme end of evil. I like the idea of having the two disagree on major points as in slavery but not to the extent where is becomes hate or too unbelievable that the two could reconcile their difference. Anders and Fenris come to mind in the rival romance as something I don't want to see again. Anders because the rivalry was cruel and Fenris supporting slavery when you LI was a slave is again unbelievable. On mocking, humor and joking around but why would anyone stay with someone if that person mocks all them all time. I'd like to have more fun with the LI. Her entire point would be that she sees potential in running around with the protagonist, a potential she can use to her own benefit because the protagonist will go where she could perhaps not go on her own, etc etc. She may have views one would conventionally disagree with in reality, but she is not stupid. Like with any other companion her 'falling in love' would be gradual and would be born out of her gaining more and more respect for the protagonist's abilites, skillful manipulation, and all that jazz. Straight up mockery and disagreeing will lower approval. Disagreeing by "out-wording" her, so to speak, will demonstrate the protagonist silver-tongue and manipulative abilities which she'd respect and thus grant a much higher approval. There could verywell be a consequence of her leaving if her approval falls below a certain point, as is also true with many companions in Dragon Age Inquisition. I did not really go into consequences for whatever for the romance-option, not initially, because we are not yet sure what kind of system bioware is going to go with. Whether it'll be like in DA:O/DA:I or like in DA2. I just wanted to offer a type of character that could very well make sense even if said character is somewhat villanous.

But in my canon world state - Anders is in exile, Hawke is trapped in the Fade, and Ser Daddy Moustache is rebuilding the Grey Wardens at Weisshaupt. Stroud's DA:I appearance sealed that deal, even if I weren't already inclined to find a way to end Hawke's storyline. Yeah, Varric is sad. But I'm sure that there's at least one gay Grey Warden who is happy that Stroud is still running around with his sexy self.

Stroud needs that timeout in the fade, he needs to learn how to trim that moustache.

You just keep saying 'mages are people!' in front of him enough and he's at 100% rivalry in no time at all! (It also helps if you are nice to him. He hates that.)

This is true, I do this in every playthrough. In fact, I like to rival Anders (being a pro-mage but disliking his merging with Justice, there's lazy writing since Anders accuse you of being pro-templar despite of helping everys ingle mage lol you gotta metagame some here tho that's true), Merrill (there are like six books you need to destroy and you can rival her without being a dick), Fenris (pro-mage = easy) and Isabela (this character is the easiest for me). I know my dearies BA and Catilina dont like this, but I like drama - edit. I hope the friendship option returns that was a great way to start a romance with Jaal
