Oh, and a Bethany 2.0 that we weren't related to . Josephine? Generic nice girl who wants to be swept off her feet, is of noble blood? Or Harding. She's also generically nice with a bit of sass. Unless you meant the mage thing..? You forgot one. Nick did say non-BW, otherwise he'd be there Oops, reading comprehension, I have none.

-Some more mutants; I don't know if Marvel has finally allowed them to grow up, but if not, I would be interested in adult versions of Illyana Rasputin, Danielle Moonstar, and Doug Ramsey. -as for more Bioware reincarnations, I would like Fake Solas 2.0; a self taught apostate who really was just a self taught apostate . Oh, and a Bethany 2.0 that we weren't related to . I'm fascinated about your interest in Bethany 2.0. I just did my first complete non-mage playthrough of DA2 a few weeks ago and I was shocked at how bland and vanilla and uninteresting Bethany was compared to Carver. In addition to it just making more narrative sense to me that Hawke is an apostate, it just sealed the deal for me when I saw how little Bethany brought to the story compared to Carver. He's so much more well developed and interesting and unique of a character in the setting. She's just kind of.....there.
What do you like about her, out of curiosity? Maybe I'm missing something because she was basically about as interesting as Leandra (re: not at all) and relevant as Gamlen (re: almost not at all).

To better answer Nick's question, I'm trying to think of non-Bioware characters I'd build Thedosian characters out of. Safiya from NWN2: MotB - which was technically Obsidian not Bioware sooo) - she was a beautiful Red Wizard of Thay (basically Tevinter, "slavers, demonologists, and magical experimenters"). Unlike her countrymen she was Neutral rather than Evil-aligned, she wasn't actively malicious but also thought nothing of keeping souls in jars because Red Wizards gonna Red Wizard. She was a teacher at the Circle Academy of Shapers and Binders, she was practical and studious but a bit reticent and so cripplingly lonely she made some ugly-cute homunculi to keep her company. I LOVE HER SO MUCH. She reminds me a little of Calpernia or Cassandra but without the Big Goals (and uh, no qualms about shady magic, so maybe less Cassandra ).

I'm sure most straight dudes wanting a Bethany who isn't related to them just want to fuck her, but for the rest of us... I like Bethany more than Carver. I thought Bethany was very sweet, and it was interesting how she wasn't THAT reluctant to go to the Circle. She seemed to fear her own magic. She also deeply resented becoming a Warden, which always pains me a bit because that's what I did to her in my canon. I really should fix that in the Keep. I really see no reason why mage Hawke makes more narrative sense, none at all. Magic and the Circle and templars are always part of the DA narrative, and I actually have no canon mages and feel very connected to each story. Carver's such an asshole, but I won't deny that he does bring a lot to the story. I just can't stand him! I'm glad we have the option to have a loving relationship with our sibling because that is something I personally can relate to. I can't relate to having a sibling who would literally do what Carver did (join the templars when I'm a mage). What a piece of shit.

Bethany is okay. Carver reminds me of my own asshole little brother, and gives me something to push against. If you can get me mad, push my buttons, you must be family. Now let me give you a noogie before I slam you through a wall, little brother.

But what about her do you find interesting and contributing? Like what specifically? I'm genuinely interested. For starters, she can be your motivation for all of Act 1, whereas Carver whines when he has no personal stakes in the matter. Then in Act 3 her being in the Circle can be a driving force in Hawke wanting to deescalate the situation, where Carver as a Templar isn't in as much danger since he can just leave.

I'm glad we have the option to have a loving relationship with our sibling because that is something I personally can relate to. I can't relate to having a sibling who would literally do what Carver did (join the templars when I'm a mage). What a piece of shit. The only thing that I did find interesting about Bethany was the possibility that she might have turned herself into the Circle if left behind. I thought that was interesting, especially since most mage-stans here tend to revile Circle apologists. Bethany seemed to actually like the Circle, but for different reasons than Vivienne and Wynne.
But that only happens after she's not a companion anymore. Maybe that's what I need to accept -- she's not interesting as a companion, but she gets more interesting after she's an NPC -- especially if she also hates being a Warden (I don't know about that content since I never did a playthrough with that option). That's an interesting perspective that we didn't really see in any other Warden.
Bethany is okay. Carver reminds me of my own asshole little brother, and gives me something to push against. If you can get me mad, push my buttons, you must be family. Now let me give you a noogie before I slam you through a wall, little brother. Totally agreed. Carver is an asshole. He's annoying , but that's what I think makes him infinitely more interesting than Bethany. Rival Templar Carver (and the build up towards that) is honestly one of the stronger, most-unique stories out of the companions in any of the games. He's not likeable at all. But that's not the point of that story. Sometimes a rival, unlikeable character is just as good (if not more so) than someone who you get along with swimmingly.

So it's less about her as a character and more of her as a plot device? Also, if Bethany is proper "motivation" for Hawke in Act 1, why isn't Hawke enough "personal stakes" for Carver in Act 1. It's literally the same relationship, just reversed.
I guess I just am curious if she's "interesting" for people because she's: a) not Carver who is unlikeable; and agreeable and non-confrontational.

Both, as interesting (no quotes ) as a character only available in act 1 can be. It’s not an objective thing. To me, Carver is not interesting AND I don’t like him. Hope this posts right; I’m on mobile and too lazy to download the app xDD

I've yet to see why Bethany is interesting though. Like I get it, you don't like Carver. But that doesn't make Bethany an interesting character. It makes her your preferred choice over him. But it doesn't make her interesting. I'm not trying to sealion here. I am truly baffled on what people like about her. The Pro-Circle and Anti-Grey Warden things are interesting enough, especially the latter. But that all happens after she's gone from the party. Maybe I'm overthinking it. LOL.

I like them both, but I do prefer Carver. Not because he's a stronger character, but because apparently I love cantankerous woobies written by Luke Kristjanson. I find him incredibly likeable and always make him a Warden so lil bro's happy and feels good about himself. 👍

But as a semi-director of the story, I make the choices that I think would create the most interesting narrative, and Templar Carver and Mage Hawke's relationship triumphing over adversity is waaaaaaay more interesting than either warden sibling's "just happened to be in town" or Circle Bethany's "stand there and be killed if Hawke tells me to" scenarios.

Yeah, there just personally wasn't any adversity in the equation for me, thus no added drama. He's desperately looking for a purpose in life, that combined with his resentment over being left behind to babysit Leandra, I don't blame him a bit.

The Bethany choice does add another layer to Here Lies the Abyss. I think most Hawkes are fairly heroic up to that point, but my canon Hawke was not brave enough when it mattered most. When Meredith asked, she folded. The fight against Nightmare is her attempt to redeem herself for her cowardice. It also means I can save my warden’s best buddy Loghain without any mixed feelings.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO What can I say? As a semi-director of the story, I make the choices that I think would create the most interesting narrative.
