This reminds me of complaints about the War Table. People thought the War Table took up resources that would otherwise have been spent on "something else". But it wasn't a choice between War Table and Something Else, it was a choice between War Table and Nothing. So all the less content NPC romances, would you have rather had the Nothing? Except in MEA it shouldn't have been the choice for gay guys to get a less content romance or nothing? Specially when other groups were getting more sizeable romances and larger number of choices. It's not the fact that it's an NPC romances, the ones in DAI were done well (and had the same level of content as companion romances), so they could have done that or even just that NPC romances had less content, but that a specific group got romances no matter the choice they made, did not have a choice to get the same level of content other groups got.
Why would gay guys have to have less good romances or their choice is Nothing when other groups *cough* Straight guys *cough* were able to get the resources to have full romances and more then the other groups got? They were not forced to give all those resources to romances for straight guys so your point doesn't make much sense. It's possible that I'm taking this the wrong way and you just mean NPC romances in general?

Almost none of it was made for me, anyway, so it's no skin off my back if most of it goes away. Literally the only exception would be in ME:A where, until Jaal was patched in, gay men ONLY had Reyes and Gil. DA2's approach to romance content is vastly more preferable to me than any game before or since: four romance options, open to everyone. If I end up not liking any of them, then at least I know it's because of my personal taste, and not because BioWare deliberately chose to give me less than everyone else.

I want a romance where I get broken up with in the harshest way possible, and then there could be a sidequest to get me government-subsidised therapy so I don't harm myself. I mean, that's one we can ALL relate to, right guys?! Guys? Soo.... a gay Bishop?
Man, Bishop was such a cool character and I loved that ending (and his epilogue in MotB). Moar immoral scumbags pls. 👌

Gay guys couldn't romance a single squadmate until we raised hell and Jaal was patched months later. My choices shouldn't be to take "less content NPC romances" or have "nothing". I would rather have discussions where devs can see/read them so that they do better next time. So that the next time they are reviewing the romance options someone around the table says, "Well, shit, would you look at that? Maybe we should revisit the distribution here so that it's not so skewed......"

Talking about the NPC romances, which is what I said, and was in the context of the direction the conversation had been going.

Imagine it in Frostbite engine (actually mentioned him myself several pages ago, but eh *shrugs* guess that got piled under several other comments )

I really don't get when people suggest if you don't like how something is done you should just burn everything to the ground. Room for improvement (lots of room...) so let's work on this-see what we can do with fewer tropes and more content. Let's see how things go if we spread the love around more evenly. There's no reason why any one set of fans should have the lion's share of content.

I'd be happy to see npc romances in the vein of Cullen and Josephine as they were well done and as satisfying as the companion romances.
Not so interested in mass effect style npc romances, which have far less content.

Ah the good old npc vs companion romance debate! My opinion is very clear about this, as much as I truly think npc romances can be meaningful I think that they should ditch the concept entirely and spend the resources in the companions. More chances to get a proper companion of our tastes and eliminates the threat of lgbtq characters being relegated in the hold *cough* ME team*cough*. There is something magical about taking your lover with you even if there is no romance content at all! like imagine you are playing the urban fantasy rpg that WE ALL WANT TO BECOME A REALITY (right?!), and you say to your werewolf boo honey lets go slay some vamps, and you go to slay some vamps with your lover, PRECIOUS, he's not waiting in your house cooking dinner (which could be a really sweet scene like Kaidan's ) he wants to go with you, he protects you, you protect him, all is love while you have vamp guts (or dust) in your hair. So so romantic

I wonder if bioware should begin implementing 'token' gay characters at this point, with all the talk of ME:A Straight females had 3 romancables, men into men had 3, lesbians had 4, straight men had 5. I have made it obvious at this point that my own personal sexuality is straight and I am obviously gendered male, so the chances of me saying anything that is even going to be taken seriously are slim as I have already noted on these forums. But the reasoning for these amounts of romancables could simply be due to the writer's lack of ideas for character. I would personally say that no character is better than a simple token character - otherwise you may just end up with the blatant stereotype that all hate I doubt the writers had any intention of deliberately throwing the LGBT community under the bus.

So so romantic Gil was not a simple less content NPC romance. I really wanted to like his romance, it's sweet, like Gil's personality, but with Jill's story and the whole "you're the part of the problem" and the method like the game treated this baby-issues, was an insult.

But the reasoning for these amounts of romancables could simply be due to the writer's lack of ideas for character. 1. Write a character like you'd normally write a straight character. 2. At the last moment, flip their sexual orientation. 3. ? ? ? 4. Profit! It's really not that hard. If they don't have ideas, they wouldn't write any straight characters either. There are 0 reasons Liam couldn't have been bi or gay, while keeping his story and personality. Even right now, you'd just remove his refusal, unlock his gay romance, and you're done. The initial 2 non-squad m/m choices in MEA were deliberate, not just caused by a lack of ideas.

No matter what choice you pick you still end up with them and having a child unlocking the ‘Growing Up’ achievement. What is the context? Is it a shotgun wedding? Who is the spouse? Is it a new character or one from the base game? Do/did they have an established relationship prior to the wedding or is it just a thrown in random npc to make a baby with for the achievement?
