Morning All. So I just found out yesterday my dad bought an EVGA 2080 XC Ultra Gaming (why I don't know because he really hasnt got any use for it, he doesn't play games....His thing is 4K Photography)...Nonetheless, he chose to buy one; though his previous card was a perfectly good and acceptable 1080 SSC. Anyways, his other system specs are an Intel 8700 K, 32 GB of 3200 DDR4 from GSKILL (though the RAM is running at 2666 because that is what the CPU supports and it won't work correctly otherwise) and an ASUS Hero X WiFi motherboard with a 4K monitor from BENQ the PD3200 series (a 60hz monitor with a 5 ms response time) believe
He was interested in seeing how the RTX 2080 performs so I installed Andromeda......and I have to say while the level of graphical detail was quite impressive compared to my own system (a GTX 1080 FTW2 on a 27" Samsung 850T 60 hz monitor running native 1440p).....I was NOT at all impressed with the frame rate I was getting. Sure, it was playable (40 to maybe 60 FPS) But there were also some significant drops (30 down to 7).
Could the BenQ monitor be responsible?
Curious

Well if you're running it at 4K theres no card which can run it 60fps all the time at that resolution all set to ultra.. Damn sweet machine otherwise, I'd recommend for gaming, 2k monitor atm.

Well if you're running it at 4K theres no card which can run it 60fps all the time at that resolution all set to ultra.. Damn sweet machine otherwise, I'd recommend for gaming, 2k monitor atm. Hi, thanks for your reply to my post. Yeah, I knew there was not a card on the market that can sustain a rock-solid 60 FPS or better at UHD Res with Ultra settings (in spite of what companies claim in their marketing). I was just curious though if a monitor with a faster refresh rate (ie an ACER monitor that runs at 120 to 144 hz with G Sync) would make any difference, because along with the FPS drop I am also seeing some very minor but very noticeable screen tearing. But yeah, absolutely, no GPU on the planet can give 200% solid-as-marble FPS of 60 or higher with Ultra settings at UHD Res.....It's just not possible because of the amount of pixels and frames that are being pushed. Something's gotta give.
And you're right, I think 1440p is still the sweet spot. With my personal system, I'm running an Intel 6850K, GTX1080FTW2, 32 G of DDR4 from GSKILL at 2400, a Samsung 950 M.2 as my bootable OS drive on a Gigabyte Phoenix SLI X99-based motherboard (such a solid board, I love it. NOT a fan of ASUS circa 2006 to Present....nothing but problems and boat loads of junk trouble. I have had 0 issues with Gigabyte) (sorry for the anti-asus rant there).
My monitor is a 27 inch Samsung S27D 850T 60 hz monitor, and in both Andromeda and Inquisition I'm getting at solid average FPS of 75 with everything on Ultra....and some scenes in Andromeda are as high as 100 with V-sync OFF. ANd this might be just personal preference, but there's something about 1440p (2560x1440) that I think is the perfect balance between great playability/performance and great-looking graphical performance. For some reason, I think Andromeda and Inquistion just look and play better at 1440p than at UHD. Don't get me wrong, 2160p is damn impressive in a lot of cases. But I haven't seen anything yet that makes me drool incessantly either for playable performance or eye-candy. I just don't think that it's quite *there* just yet.
Though I am interested in seeing these new 27 and 32 inch UHD, HDR, G-Sync monitors 144hz, 4 to 1ms response time monitors from ACER. I would love to see one in action, but I've checked out the price....the 27 incher starts at 2599.99 CDN. That's prohibitively expensive; I'll stick with my 27 inch 1440 Samsung monitor, thanks.
What are your thoughts on the new GSync/HDR monitor from Acer?
And to keep this on an ANTHEM based thread train.....Are you excited for ANTHEM? What do you think the Rec'd Specs will be? The more I learn about it, the more interested I am in it. Inititally I wasn't sold on the Co_Op play....I have never been an MMO fan, I feel awkward about 'teaming up' with strangers from all over the world and the whole PVP thing like ME3 Multiplayer, I find confusing and it's never been my thing. But as I have followed ANTHEM and found out that none of that will be the case for gameplay style, and as I have seen how they are planning to make it work....It actually looks as though it will work, it will be easy and fun to play....and the format play actually has me intrigued. I am curious to see how the style of Co-Op gameplay with fit into the action and story they want to tell.

X99 sweet. I have X79 with 4960X + 1070OC and 1200p monitor. This machine hasnt crashed a single time yet during its soon 6 years of operation, and I'm thinking never going back to consumer Z-series anymore! I think at this point the new 2k HDR monitors are WAY overpriced, so I'm staying away from them for a generation at least I love how co-op play works in MEAMP and DAIMP so I'm gonna try Anthem too, really excited to see a new world which isnt DA or ME universe from BioWare!

4k gaming is a gimmick. Your framerate will always be abysmal trying to render that many pixels. 1440p is the perfect resolution to go with.
