Desert Island Girl @ariadnesisland If you have a chance, I had two weeny DA lore questions: Do Templar powers affect spells cast by blood magic (like fireballs cast that way, not the mind control); is necromancy like Dorian uses necessarily blood magic? Mary Kirby @biomarykirby Yes to both Desert Island Girl @ariadnesisland Thanks! So when Cullen says “I can accept that necromancy isn’t blood magic” in the Necromancer spec war table, is it one of those “It’s so widespread in Nevarra we turn a Chantry blind eye to it” sort of things, like phylacteries? Mary Kirby @biomarykirby The Nevarrans consider necromancy just a standard burial practice. It's totally blood magic, but nobody would ever argue that point with the Mortalitassi.

Elle @elle_EnasalinI really wanna know all of the writers’ reactions when they realized the line “I like big boats, I cannot lie” made it into the game Brave Ser Jo of the Boggy North @everymage_jo@patrickweekes, @biomarykirby, et al? Patrick Weekes @patrickweekesHey, I wasn’t even on that project! But IIRC, it was @davidgaider who insisted it stay in. Mary Kirby @biomarykirbyIf I recall, we pretty much all just egged @sherylchee on to write it, so... Sheryl @sherylcheeThere was definitely some enabling. I put it in, then @jbhepler took it out. And then a month or two later it was back in because @davidgaider put it back. Jennifer Hepler @jbheplerThat's pretty much how I remember it. David Gaider @davidgaiderYup. I remember thinking, "no... this cannot end here." Brave Ser Jo of the Boggy North @everymage_joI, for one, am very glad it didn’t!

Imperator Furiåsa @devilkittenThe other day I got this comment that I had to prove myself, prove my skill within my given profession. My thoughts around that are as follows: 1. Why do I have to prove myself when my male colleagues get opportunity after opportunity to not only fail but fail upwards? 2. I've been in this industry for 19 years. Have I not proven myself enough by now? 3. People ask me why I'm a perfectionist. I'm a perfectionist because I'm NOT allowed to fail. If I fail, all women fail. If I fail, I don't fail upwards. I have to drag my failures around. 4. Every time I fail, I have to prove myself. 5. Most of my colleagues that I started out with are game directors by now. I'm lucky if I get a position on my current level. Most offers are a step down. I still have to prove myself. 19 years experience, & I have to prove myself. - Ugh. This just pisses me off to no end, and just another reminder of the culture problems at BW, and across the industry. I keep hearing about staff (typically male) who "fail upwards", or getting promoted to leadership positions they're unqualified for. I think this is what they call "The Peter Principle" at work.

I’m assuming that since she tweeted it, it’s more likely to be some rando vs. someone at BW. To be crystal clear, the industry (all software devs, not just in games) does have a huge problem with this, I just don’t think people would invite the awkwardness of talking about a current coworker in public.

IDK, I never cease to be disappointed at the unearned confidence of randos talking about women’s tech careers. The place I work at has an engineering blog, and it is startling the kind of comments people get on blogposts when their picture looks female. Startling... but also kind of funny, because a lot of commenters will try to suggest “improvements” to the post’s code snippets, but they 100% of the time end up sounding like pretentious college students with no actual experience.

Being told to "prove my skill within my given profession" doesn't strike me as a comment made by some rando. And the points she raises don't support that either. True, but - known issues aside - let's not forget that BW employees also react to things that happen within the industry or their colleagues. It's not rare for me to see them talking about dev-related stuff and it later turns out that they are commenting on something external, like an article or a discussion/case that's gone public. So it can't be assumed that this is internal stuff - like you said before, this is a significant problem within the industry so we can't be sure where the impulse to speak about it came from. I think people may be a bit too quick to read almost everything like it's indicating problems at BW lately. I don't want to play down whatever BW has to tackle there, but it's getting to a point where some devs (like John Epler) began to regularly underline that it's NOT just their jobs that keep stressing them or they're not in a bad mood because something wrong happens under their roof This can't be healthy as well.

Emily (aka Domino) Taylor pentapod Programmer: I'd like to observe your workflow to see if there's anything we can fix or streamline! Me: 😍 I may have a few suggestions... Now this here ^ This here is super important. Programmers and end users should interact on how to use and streamline the tools in use. I know this too well as we've had to deal with some legacy graphics assets 'placement' editors and such, which we've now streamlined to be as easy and fast to use. I think we cut almost an hour off every time it was needed in the end!

Themed merch is not whaling. Its merch. There's nothing hidden, tricky, or nefarious about the transaction, unless you count "We know people will buy this, let's sell it!" as nefarious.
