An idea that occurred to me over the last couple of days. If we're being given more freedom over our character's background this time, I wonder if we'll be able to play as an elf-blooded human. They've been NPCs since day one, but much like the Qunari/Vashoth before Inquisition, they've never been an option for the PC.

I find complaints about the graphics I've seen online interesting, cause this might be the prettiest Dragon Age game. Not that the competition was stiff...
Are the complaints about the characters? Yes, the faces and armor/clothes look bad (unrealistic and exaggerated).

Hmmmm?....Looks like the spitting image of Vincent Price to me, don't know why some think the images are unrealistic I myself think they look good, but their looks will change when the game comes out they always do in my opinion.

Speaking of mage moves:
Speaking of moves, I watch the Official Gameplay Demo again and specifically paid attention to Neve. Well, well.... the Mage combat moves have been re-worked... again. From the demo, a Mage can cast long distance spells, can jump in for close quarter melee attack (with her scepter) and jumps back out of the way. Now, this is Neve the companion to Rook. I doubt she is specced out as the Arcane-Warrior. Nevertheless, she did do the close quarter thingy... My question is: Is it necessary? Especially If I do play as Rook the Mage. In other words. to max my damage output, must I perform melee attacks on top of spell casting?

That's from the crappy trailer. We've seen in the gameplay that they look a bit less cartoony.

I honestly think a lot of the "cartoony" feel comes from the texture. Everything is very smooth and doesn't have a lot of gradients that creates natural looking skin, at least not in the trailer. Compare Solas skin with how it looks like in DAI and you might see what I'm getting at. Animations and all of that stuff is quite a bit better, but because the skin makes the characters look more cartoony, the animations feel a bit exaggerated too.

My take is that the trailer's whole cartoony feel was an aesthetic decision on Bioware's part, which, at least in my case, didn't land well at all. But the gameplay eased my concerns, so here's hoping for a more realistic version of Vincent Price and the rest of the team.

The skin lacks in texture, but perhaps they are trying to overcorrect from Inquisition, where most characters ended up looking quite haggard. With Emmrich, he has some pronounced wrinkles, but outside of that his skin looks completely smooth. Though the worst of it has been the image of a male qunari Rook, it looks egregiously bad to me. Though it's not just the skin, characters definitely seem to have more pronounced eyes (compared to Inqusition), which can overall be a good thing because we read a lot of emotion from the eyes alone. But if things like eyes end up being very pronounced, they do tend to read as cartooney, especially combined with better overall facial animations.

Though the worst of it has been the image of a male qunari Rook, it looks egregiously bad to me. That Qunari mage looks bad indeed. Looks like someone badly photoshopped human features on a qunari head. The lady Qunari companion looks good to me on the pics we got, she got broad features that reminds me a bit of the Qunari from DA2. They looked great in DA2, although there were like 3 different faces.

To me the characters look kinda like that 2.5D animation style popularized by Spiderverse, and which I personally really like. I find photorealism a dull aesthetic choice and one that ages poorly. There's even precedent for stylized visuals in DA2, though it's more successful here, and I prefer it to DA:I's pasty looking characters. And DA:O, much as I love it, had ugly, samey looking playdough people. There's no consistent DA art style, so Veilguard can hardly be accused of disloyalty in the visual department.

Compared to characters that we saw in game, he indeed looks very out of place, even in the group screenshot. But Rook, Varric, Harding, Neve, Bellara, Solas and those NPC ladies from gameplay reveal look fine to me. They are definitely stylized but i wouldn't call them cartoony.

They look very plastic and suffer from 'uncanny valley' (ref: Andromeda and Anthem) One way to offset that is to add a light stylisation which no longer offends the 'uncanny valley' effect as they are not photo-realistic nor meant to be. In short, given that BioWare were stuck with Frostbite (whilst ME5 has moved to Unreal, Dragon Age wasn't going to reset the game again) so it's a smart decision that might have some critics but not as many had it attempted but failed to be more realistic.

Honestly this is really over stated criticism. Video games are an animated/ stylized 'cartoony' medium in the first place. Its not supposed to be that realistic since having stuff that is truly realistic creates a whole host of other problems for these companies then it solves. Not the least of which no way to distinguish one game for another. If every company is striving for realism then ultimatley all games will look the same. It doesen't have to look realistic, just has to look like Dragon Age.

Yeah I thin ksometimes people forget that DA has always hada bit of a cartoon vibe to it even back in Origins. Sure it's a matuer gam eas there is swearing and a bit of blood and gore but it's always been done in a very fantas yand cartoony way. Even Varric has an aptly ewll named quest called Well Shit in DAI. It would b ehard t ohave a story in a world with magic and dragons without going down a moer cartoon yroute. The name on it's own Dragon Age kind of gives that awa yfor me.
