I think you and I were aiming at the same general goal, but I came off as too critical of EA specifically and you thought I was just advocating for its demise. No, I agree that the problem is a spiral of escalating shareholder expectations, and the solution is regulation. Tear down EA and another publisher just takes their place. I’m just trying to stress to people that “X game sold well” is no longer a guarantee of a sequel. Not in the current market. Well, they can't STOP producing games though. And if they have to choose between sequels or new IP, then games from known franchises will almost always sell better. Sequel-itis has been infecting many mediums for a reason - and with recent serialization trend still going strong...? It's why it's hard to believe that EA will drop Dragon Age anytime soon, or Mass Effect for that matter.

It apparently costs atleast $100 million now to make a new AAA IP, so very expensive, so the idea they will just throw away established IPs that I don't think have ever lost money in any of their published games doesn't make much sense.

Yea, and how much more money it takes to market a new IP? So yea, from my perspective, it doesn't make much sense. Especially if they're going to try and keep building their own platform/subscription service - they need a good variety of titles to attract people, similar to how consoles do it. It can't be all sports games*, Battlefield and Anthem. *(with the threat of gambling regulations looming, nevermind the increasing hostility towards loot boxes, card system or predatory mtx, I think the time of putting more and more eggs into that basket may be coming to a slow end)

Plus, with their game subscription service they need to have as many IPs and variety as possible so that doesn't really incentivise nixing their existing IPs either.

Just to get away from the whole "how much of a threat is Anthem" discussion, which is kind of played out --- am I the only guy who never heard any of the Solas-Bull chess game before now? ... Really? It's a banter chain that happens only if we save Chargers. You can hear all of it here if you'd like: Thanks. I think there are a lot of things deep in the trees that I never get to; I tend to switch up party members a lot and keep their use more-or-less balanced, so I end up hearing the same stuff on most runs. I'll have to pick up that mod which lets you control the timer someday.

Yea, I've used Cheat Engine for a while now, it really does help - especially if I choose to switch parties often or stick to party composition that prevents much banter happening between companions that are rarely together in the group.

John Epler @eplerjcI feel like I make this point on a yearly basis, but as you climb the ranks of game dev, your time spent in PowerPoint and Excel increases accordingly. Anyways. *returns to staring at Excel, hoping to will it into completion*

Anyways. *returns to staring at Excel, hoping to will it into completion* Unironically, Excel/Sheets is low-key amazing though. It’s essentially a massively parallelized functional programming language. It has lots of the features that are currently coveted in modern programming languages, and we all collectively act like it’s just for managers and finance. I’ve very occasionally done real scripting in Sheets. One time I used it for a hobby project that required a procedurally generated image. Let me repeat that: I used a sheet to generate a whole entire image file, and it wasn’t even that hard. I eventually converted it into a “real” scripting language, but the sheet worked shockingly well.

Mary Kirby @biomarykirbyIs the character named "Connor McDavid" but with, like, nine apostrophes? For those who aren't in the know about the greatness that is hockey (aka anyone from a warm place) Connor McDavid is the captain of Edmonton's NHL team and is arguably the best player in the league - I say arguably because I am a 25+ year fan of the Penguins and therefore I say Crosby is better [/canadian] Unironically, Excel/Sheets is low-key amazing though. So much this. My non-industry friends make fun of me for how much I get excited when I can use excel (I've been using sheets more lately for ease of portability). Obviously not everyone here shares that enthusiasm

Let me repeat that: I used a sheet to generate a whole entire image file, and it wasn’t even that hard. I eventually converted it into a “real” scripting language, but the sheet worked shockingly well. It is indeed extremely useful for a great many different things, from simply generating a random number when you need one to making power and resource calculations for a simulation game, and making auto-calculating character sheets for tabletop roleplaying games. As for more involved applicatons, I've used Excel scripts to generate plausible star systems for my sci-fi roleplaying campaigns. I attempted to convert the application to Java once but there I had to write the user interface methods myself, which Excel provided me with for no work at all since all I needed was tables. Since there's nothing about programming I hate as much as programming a user interface, I abandoned the project and stayed with Excel.

Er... catgirls confirmed? My guess is he's thinking about casting AJ Michalka for something. (Or at least passing on her name to the people who actually do the casting. That's how Eve Myles ended up playing Merrill - David Gaider was keen on her doing the job and she actually said yes when the appropriate people at BioWare asked her agent.)
