Emily Gilbert @e_gilbert44@patrickweekes I have a bone to pick with you (no offense meant, love your work). Why does Solas only romance a female Lavellan in Inquisition? To clarify, why not a human, dwarf, or Qunari, of any gender? Patrick Weekes @patrickweekesElven only because his issues are very specifically elven. Female only was contentious. We went back and forth a bunch. In the end we were worried about hitting the Amoral Bisexual Villain trope, so we made the romance straight only. This explanation annoys me. If they're really worried about bisexual tropes/stereotyping maybe don't make the promiscuous companion bi again. Dragon age has been better about that then alot of things because they also have bi characters who aren't - but 3 games in a row the "slutty" companion has been bi/pan. Its all very well to say you design the character first and then decide their romancability, that sounds great in theory, but when you decide every slutty/promiscuous companion feels like they're bi then maybe its time to self examine why. It didn't bother me in the first 2 games but now its turned into a pattern.

But now that I look at it, I like Anders even more for being a bisexual terrorrist willing to blow up a Chantry and kill innocent people in the process if it means mages will be free. No concerns whatsoever regarding stereotype. Just an ultimately flawed man doing what he feels is the only thing left to do for his beliefs, sexuality be damned. EDIT: Words.

I wish Solas had been bi. As much as I love my Solavellan, I respect her too much to make her the type of character to blindly follow wherever Solas leads her. On the other hand, I have a male Lavellan who'd gladely see the world burn for the sake of elvhen glory. He'd be right there by Solas' side, LI or not. He probably even loves Solas secretly, but It'd just have added such a great dimension if his feelings could be official and not just headcanon.

There some context to that? Does it mean Alix is at Bioware currently? Just knows the VA? Or is there a con I don't know about?

People glossing over Weekes outright calling Solas a villain. I recall people theorizing that he's actually an anti-hero.

I'd say Solas is an anti-villain, anyway, if we're to classify him beyond "antagonist". He could turn anti-hero or stay anti-villain, depending on where things go.

What I meant is that he referred to Solas as filling the trope of a villain.

Which the Qun apparently views sex casually anyways. So his sex crazed persona could be just an act.

People glossing over Weekes outright calling Solas a villain. I recall people theorizing that he's actually an anti-hero. Because he didn't. All the time he's talking about the perception of Solas among fans. Their concerns circle around Solas not being prematurely pegged into one role or trope, instead of maintaining a mantle of a complex, somewhat inscrutable, polarizing character we still have discussions about, 4-5 years after DAI. He is the guy whose emotions about carries us in our waiting for DA4 - and while there's no way of telling how much of the narrative of DA4 he will he be carrying on his back, I think we can assume that it may be a lot. So playing with our perception is even more important than it usually is.

If you read my post again you'll notice i specifically mention that Dragon Age has bi characters who aren't promiscuous and thats why there still better than most. I did not forget josephine, leliana, merril, anders or fenris. I also mention it didn't bother me that there was a slutty bi after the first two games, this is because there were other bi characters and i think its good to have a variety a different types of rep. It was only after inquisition when it became clear that each game had one promiscuous companion, and that one was always bi/pan (aka when it became a pattern) that i became a little irked. And only when Weekes started talking about avoiding bi stereo types when they'd ignored that one that it became proper annoyance. As for Solas, i don't really care whether what his sexuality is. If they'd just said he felt straight I'd have thought nothing more on it. Although i do think that there is nothing wrong with having a villian be bi, its only if all your villains are bi that it becomes a bother. Just like there's nothing wrong with a promiscuous bi, it's only when all your promiscuous characters are bi that it becomes a bother.

All the time he's talking about the perception of Solas among fans. That's not how I read his statement. Why would they be concerned about the "bisexual" trope when it comes far before the "villain" trope is revealed at the very last DLC? His statement rather implies he's referring to the entire theme of Solas as perceived by the writers from the very beginning and their concern stemmed from users perceiving the trope the same way. But he also does say "amoral" so that circles back to the user as I doubt the writers perceive him as amoral. So I think it's just a poorly conveyed statement and this entire line of discussion has been pointless

Well, they knew eventually he'd be seen as a villain and they wanted to avoid the bisexual thing being associated with that. Apparently. (Though I think they over thought it. Should just be that Solas is straight b/c Solas is straight, imo.) But I think Lebanese Dude wasn't even concerned about the bisexual bit? Just the villain bit. Getting the impression he's had arguments with people about how to classify Solas.
(...) this entire line of discussion has been pointless ^This.
So yeah, anyone able to identify the location from that Alix and the Anthem protag lady's pic? I looked at the street view of the Expo Tower (the new Bioware building) on Google and it doesn't look like its there(but who knows with construction?). However, does Bioware even do their voice work in-house? Or do they fly people to LA or something?
Basically Alix referencing the Inquisitor, while being jet lagged from travel and hanging out with a currently confirmed Bioware VA, is giving me hopes and I want to squash them as soon as possible, please. lol
Could we just ask her where that pic was taken, do you think? And by "we", I mean someone with a twitter account.

Yea, but there was one character people keep comparing Solas to that was bi - Anders. Given that, Bioware may have had factored in that their antagonists/polarizing characters may be viewed as repetitious.

Seems a tad too warm for Canada now? On the other hand, it's not Edmonton where they're recording VO AFAIK - they do a lot of that in Great Britain actually, so Alix wouldn't have to fly to BW HQ for that, right?

Not really. I personally hope he's not a villain at all.
