I wonder what Harding is? Warrior or Rogue? It will influence what I roll as a starting char. I'm thinking Rogue - a spymaster kind of figure. Oof then I better roll a warrior so she's in the party a lot.

Opened the gameplay trailer on Youtube a bit early, and the comments have me in stitches.
It's either people really excited for the game, or people talking about how the game appeals to the girls and the gays and is too woke.
I wish I was exaggerating lmao

I think she's a rogue. While it seems dual wielding could be back for warriors, it'd be an even bigger surprise if warriors are able to use bows once more. That would be the easy option but I would hope that warriors get their own ranged options. Spears or crossbows. That'd be interesting. As I said/meant, it's unlikely they'd go for bows for warriors. The only reason I think there are good chances of dual wielding being back is because Taash should be a warrior. I'm thinking Rogue - a spymaster kind of figure. Oof then I better roll a warrior so she's in the party a lot. If dual wielding is truly back for warriors, it's highly unlikely I'd play a different class for my first playthrough. I wanted to play like that in a DA game for literally over a decade.

On the first hand I will say "I won't care' and I don't want to care about my protag class versus those I bring with me into battle. But thinking about it I can't gurantee that, especially since Dragon Age has often forced you to bring companions along and have a balanced party...though imo Inquisition was the first one to start to move away from such rigidity.

I was thinking of a balanced rpg party. With a limit to three here it would have to be: warrior/tank, mage, rogue.

From director John Epler, “Dragon Age: The Veilguard features some of the deepest companion storylines in Dragon Age history, navigating romance, tragic loss and complex choices that will affect relationships with players and the fate of The Veilguard".
Well and good. But, for me, will I be inclined to go "deep" into the character? You see I play games to pass the time, have fun (no. 1) and mod the game to make my gaming life easier. Everything else is secondary. So, creating a "deep" char but the game play is meh.. that's a waste of time and resources that Bio put into the character. On the other hand, if the game lassoes me into getting attached to a char(s), that's a worthwhile investment.... 'cause I like my shep, Morrigan, Leliana, Liara, Miranda, Kasumi and Jack.
Complex choice mechanics per se is annoying but if done right.... well that's a game. Loss of a char that you liked is hard. I liked Bethany, for example. Her loss via a "flip of the coin", so to speak, was harsh. So I hope a "tragic loss" in DA:V is something beyond our ability to control and not a binary choice. Plus, complex choices that affect relationships and potentially party cohesion.... well, I hope that not being a brainiac to navigate jealousies, is good enough. LOL
Count me very much against singular forced tragic loss. I much prefer where nature of tragedy is dependent on choices we've made. Curious what they mean by depth. is it more of the spam approval to unlock companion detail or a return to attempting a more complex approach.

According to Bio's blogs, you need to use your team skills to win battles. I take it it means a "balanced party" or mission skills requirements = taking along companions you may not like.
My suspicion is that this is a deliberate combat mechanic. After, all, the protag is responsible for bringing the team together.

so, is Davrin the only companion that could fit the "tank" position? that could mean that it is not as important as it was in past games? or that temporary companions would be our tank when necessary?

It could means that other companions can be built into the role, like if there’s an arcane-warrior type spec Neve could go into. They might be trying to loosen that up.

Considering there's fewer party slots than before, I suspect the traditional RPG roles are less critical for most encounters. But you may still need a shield-tank for boss fights. But also, you can probably spec Taash to be a shield-tank.

It's not that different from Dragon Age 2, where the classic tank was Aveline. Alistair was also the one filling the role in Origins. Taash is a warrior, most likely, but she seems focused on offense rather then tanking and defense.

Tank doesn't automatically mean the shield is needed. A lot of games have tanks that use other weapons. WoW for example has two-handed tanks or literal bears (and we all know how sturdy bears are after DAI). Or watch Manfred being summon-tank

Overall, I think there's good chances they went all out in making the companions feel distinct from the protagonist and the respective specializations. Which is something I think was a misstep in Inquisition, especially for someone like Cassandra.

Also an article that original said "playable" companions got edited to remove that.

I'm not making any expectations on that front. The last leaker, at least, suggested that we'd still have a 4-men party, so he was at least unaccurate on that front.

I was just checking on my current World State in the Keep in case it is needed and discovered that the World Lore section has had all the items and icons removed, so there is just a blank map of Thedas. Presumably they must have done it a few weeks back when the Keep was unavailable whilst they updated it. It is interesting they would do this, though.
Also, I seem unable to play my old Inquisition as it is not possible to log in to my Origin Account as it is off line. Anyone know how I could get round this?

With Taash and some of the stills indicating the dual-wielding is back for warriors, that is what I'm going to pick. I'm currently leaning towards male dwarf (that and male Qunari are the only combinations not represented amongst companions), romancing Davrin, and just filling out the party with warriors by including Taash (...no humans, and one of each other race...).
If I do go with a warrior trifecta, I would like to have a different background than Davrin and Taash. I wonder if the Shadow Dragons (Ambassadoria dwarf?) or Antivan Crows would work?
Is it confirmed Taash is a Warrior? Just asking since Isabela had a couple axes she could dual wield in DA2 from one of the DLCs. Lucanis is shown dual wielding a dagger and a rapier and if Taash isn't a Warrior, than Davrin is the only warrior among the 7 companions.

With the faction system, I wonder if it's going to be like Origins and Inquisition where someone from each faction exists regardless, and everyone that the player doesn't choose dies somehow. Bring on the All-Factoins fan fiction.
