I was wondering if anyone else has noticed or has a better idea about this. In Bioware games particularly I've noticed a significant change in the lighting effects between pre-release trailers and footage; and the actual lighting in the finished product. Of particular note are Dragon Age: Inquisition and of course Anthem. For comparison here's the entrance to Ghilan'ain's Grove from Inquisition depicted by the landscape trailer: compared to the in-game equivalent location: and in the Case of Anthem here's a couple of stills from the original gameplay trailer in 2017: compared to stills from the most recent Gear Customization Livestream: Now in Anthem's case it could simply be a time of day issue (or the fact that technically those are two different locations), or it could simply be that the trailer footage is deliberately designed to be more aesthetically pleasing. Certainly the "washed out" quality and harshness of the lighting does detract a little from the overall feel of an area, godrays and such notwithstanding. Is this simply a downgrade, or something else entirely? Thoughts?

There's a number of questions that would need to be answered first. To really make a valid comparison between DA the game vs DA the trailer, you'd need to take a screengrab of the same location, same brightness settings, and maxed out PC settings for everything else. That said, the trailer was probably an earlier vertical slice which almost always looks better than the final game.
Same with the Anthem trailer vs the Livestream. Streams are obviously not going to look as good as a trailer. What were the graphic settings in the livestream? Did they set the draw distance really short for streaming, which would wash out distant terrain? Time of day, location, degradation from the stream will all play a role.
But again, the trailer was an earlier vertical slice which will almost undoubtedly look better than the final game. And that's common for most AAA games. As a general rule, the further out from launch you see a "gameplay" trailer, the less likely it'll look like the final product.

Also a lot of things seen before game is out means more of the environment is not finished, especially lighting.

The discussions after the 2017 gameplay trailer were all almost unanimous about that the final product will certainly look downgraded compared to the trailer. So, no surprises there if it happens. It will be more shocking if the visuals are on par with the trailer.
I am actually more curious if Anthem will support mods that alter/tweak the graphic settings/lighting. Probably not, but could be nice to have.
