I was a late bloomer, only found this game a couple of years ago. Still, it is the only MP game I play.
And out of some handful of games, it's also the only game I've kept playing after finding it (= husband putting a ps3 controller in my hand, saying "Here is the big robot guy you kept asking about, he's almost immortal, go kill stuff!").

And thanks to the active community/forum here, it still is going strong. Every time after reading a few new war stories over here - no matter if they are glorious victories of friends playing together or horrorstories with frustrating pugs, the game keeps calling me back to experience some more for myself.

I guess you missed the first three Gears of War then? The gunplay in those games was better and a reload cancel (called active reload, awesome mechanic) gave weapons a damage boost for a short time. There were no powers though, as it was strictly a 3rd person shooter.
