Until Dawn Remake Is Being Criticized For Looking "Way Worse" Than The Original

Until Dawn, along with Horizon Zero Dawn, will probably go down as two modern titles that in no way, shape, or form needed remakes/remasters. Their original versions were perfectly playable on PS5, they're both less than a decade old, and they're absolutely fine to look at. The only thing that these remasters are really offering is improved performance and enhanced visuals, but in the case of Until Dawn, it doesn't even look like this new remade version is offering even that.

Over the past couple of days, as fans and content creators have been getting their hands on the title a little early, there has been a lot of criticism swirling on social media about Until Dawn's PS5 version looking "way worse" than the original. For example, check out the comments section of a recent comparison video by YouTuber ElAnalistaDeBits.



A lot of the comments immediately pick up on the PS5 version's lighting, which appears to be far brighter and less moody and dark than the original. We can see some pretty drastic examples of this right at the start of the video, as comparisons honestly look like they were taken during different times of the day. You can find a number of comments joking about the lighting change, calling the game "Already Dawn" and "After Dawn".

There are also complaints about general changes to the game's atmosphere, which aren't helped by this lighting change. One user claims that developer Ballistic Moon "completely destroyed the atmosphere" of the game, while another says the PS5 version of Until Dawn looks "way worse" than the original.

You could probably forgive some dodgy artistic direction if the game ran better than the original, but there are apparently some issues there too. First reported by ShirrakoGaming, it seems as though Until Dawn's PS5 version is both buggier than the original, and crashes more often too.

Shirrako isn't the only person experiencing this either. Now that the game has launched, the user reviews for the title on Steam have been flooding in, and have dropped to Mixed at the time of writing. From the negative reviews, we can see that several players are experiencing crashes, stuttering, screen tearing, and other technical issues, with a few reviews thrown in complaining about the dreaded PSN requirements.

Right now, it doesn't sound like there's much appeal in trying out Until Dawn on PS5 right now, and that's without the game's mandatory $60 price tag. Unlike Horizon Zero Dawn, Until Dawn doesn't have a $10 upgrade option, meaning your paying full price for a pretty pointless remake that runs and looks worse than the original. Yeah, I'll pass on that one.

Yesterday, the dam broke for Ubisoft, and the gaming press and gaming public stopped fighting each other after two months of GamerGate warfare to turn toward a new common enemy.

Beloved video game designer and industry icon Hideo Kojima has hurt his back again. For those of you who are not closely monitoring the situation, Kojima first publicly reported back pain on 24th September. While we are not medical doctors, in our opinion, this could be a flareup of that original injury, but the auteur creator seems to think it's a separate thing. In both instances, many, many fans suggested that this targeted pain was the direct consequence of Kojima having borne the weight of the entire video game industry on his broad, capable shoulders for so many long years.

We trawled through hundreds of replies across the two posts, with dozens of well-wishers suggesting the same thing: that Kojima's pain stems from a repetitive strain injury caused by the heavy lifting done first at Konami (Metal Gear Solid) and later at Kojima Productions (Death Stranding). One fan memorably suggested that perhaps the creator, known for his fourth-wall-breaking marketing stunts, was heralding the inclusion of a new character, "Back Hurtman", in the upcoming Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and we'd believe it.
