Many of us who've played Dragon Age 2 have preferred moments for starting the 2 story DLCs. Some are driven by loot, others dialogue, or the most roleplaying appropriate time for Hawke to be there. I've played both DLCs in every act, and I've enjoyed the little details that change with each. Act 1 Hawke goes to the hunting party in MoTA as a gatecrasher, in Act 2 he or she is invited as they sold some of their deep roads stash to the Duke, and in Act 3 they are there as the Champion. Going to either DLC in Act 2 or 3 opens up Carver and Bethany to be included in your party. They will be allowed leave from the Circle, the Templars or the Wardens to join you. This gives you new dialogue from both, including some insight into their new lives and whether or not they're happy. Taking a romance option also changes the banter. I once went to Legacy with Fenris after he broke up with Hawke in Act 2, but before they got back together in Act 3. He remarked on this, thanking Hawke for bringing him along (with Aveline commenting on how awkward it was ) Banter and story will always drive me to experiment with timings and companions, but how do you approach it?

I usually like to play these in Act 3 because it's a chance to hang out with your sibling more without making the end of Act 2 seem weird. (Since the game implies that you haven't seen them since the end of Act 1.)

Don't forget Sebastian! The Exiled Prince was also a DLC! I am, of course, kidding. Every day I try to forget Sebastian. I also usually run the other two in Act 3, although not for role playing reasons, necessarily. Mostly it is due to the 'slump' in Act 3 from the highs of Act 2, so the inherent differences of the DLCs make them a welcome intermission in the base story. There is also a gameplay reason for Legacy to be played as late as possible, which is the the Hawke Key scales to your level, as I recall, meaning the higher your Hawke's level, the more powerful the Key.

I usually like to play Mark of the Assassin at the end of act 2, to keep with the Qunari theme.
Then I play Legacy at the end of Act 3, mostly as a hindsight lead in to Inquisition, though I also like to think that my Warden Carver saw the flames as he was leaving the city before rushing back, rather than randomly showing up.

I played Legacy late in Act 2 and MotA in Act 3. In both cases it was purely because of the Fenris Romance banters (Gotta love those plucky elves ). If I were to replay DA2 from scratch, I might wait until Act 3 to do either DLC and save Legacy for last. Maybe even save it until after the main story is finished, since it's sort of a prologue to DAI.

I prefer to play them both during Act 3.
Partly that's because I want an opportunity to see Bethany and Carver in the later acts and be able to see their new outfits and use their specializations. I prefer Act 3 as they will be at a higher level and also I feel it makes more sense from a story point of view - I especially feel Legacy makes most sense when some water has passed under the bridge and the characters are older and wiser.
Additionally, Act 3 is kind of short, so I like using the DLCs to fatten it up a bit. I like Mark of the Assassin early in Act 3, then Legacy right before The Last Straw so I can have the Hawke's Key as strong as it can be.

I tend to play Legacy in Act 2 preferably after completing Fenris' quests (to establish his relationship with Hawke) and before All that Remains to get Leandra's dialogues after completing it as for Mark of the Assassin generally just before the final quest in Act 3 so that when Hawke gets back they'll be like 'I leave for a few days and things go to hell' which gives Anders enough time to uhm...work on his 'presents' for the Chantry (only if not taken along of course)

I've played them both in all 3 acts as well. I do tend to do them most of the time during Act 2 though for 2 reasons really. The first is it gives our hero Hawke a chance to establish themselves more in the story first and us a chance to know them and their companions. My second reason being it's good to use them to help build our character up a level or 2 before we take on what I consider to be one of the toughest fights in the game in the Arishok and his Qunari at the end of Act 2. There is a 3rd reason why I tend to go with Act 2 in that it's an opportunity assuming they survive act 1 to then at least work with Bethany/Carver at least once in each Act that way as waiting till the finale just feels a bit way too long.

I think Mark of the Assassin should come early in Act 3. It makes sense to do MotA before the situation with the Mages and Templars would make it strange for Hawke to just up and leave the city in the middle of a crisis (although I could see them wanting to take a break). The set up for it also seems to fit a lot better, as Duke Prosper invited you at one of the many banquets honouring the Champion, it makes more sense for Tallis to hire you if you are "basalit-an", Bethany/Carver are older and have undergone more character development and Hawke honouring their mother's memory with the Caprice coins is extremely sweet. Legacy I typically play near the end of Act 3. It seems to fit better nearer the endgame as a lead into Inquisition, it gives Corypheus only about 3 years to scheme, which seems more realistic than being nearly a decade if you did it in Act 1. Hawke's fame as the Champion also makes it more likely for the Carta to have tracked them down and like with MotA, Bethany/Carver are older and have more character development if Legacy is done later. Also Varric adds in a conversation between Hawke and their mother's "ghost", all to give his friend some closure, even if only in his story. That is worth all the feels.

Seriously though, for those wondering his content is fixed to each act, so no head scratching there. honestly, by this point i prefer to only get him in act 3, and even than it's because we get leliana's cameo =D speaking of which, it is noteworthy to mention that in mark of the assassin, she recognize you if you did the act 3 sebastian mission, but not the other way around. so if you do mark of the assassin prior to the act 3 mission, she will not recognize that she met you, which can be a bit weird. should be fine with dulci encounter though, since during "on the loose" she will greet you with femiliarity since you are the champion, so if you met before it will not look weird. that being said, if you let emile have sex with the waitress during on the loose, it makes the mark of the assassin encounter all the more fun. so generally i suggest doing mark of the assassin later in act 3 for the sake of getting the most out of it. as for legacy, sibling wise it's weird during act 2 if they are in the circle/templars, otherwise it should be fine. i suggest trying to do in every act at least once however, to see how dialogue is effected.

Nice info, thx Blaze. One of the reasons I love BioWare DLCs is that things change depending on when you play them. I hadn't noticed the Leliana thing as I ignore Sebastian a little too much.

I hadn't noticed the Leliana thing as I ignore Sebastian a little too much. that's not possible, there is no "too much" amount to ignore that guy. if anything you are not ignoring him enough. almost every time he talks i just roll my eyes so much they are in the risk of falling by this point, but leliana is worth it.

I've only played through DA2 once since getting the DLCs, but here's why I chose to do them when I did. I took Circle mage Bethany with me for both: Legacy - Started it right at the very beginning of Act 2, but pretended it took place between Acts, not too long after the end of Act 1. Once Hawke was suddenly thrown into the nobility, she would have been the talk of the town - making it easier for the crazy Carta dwarves to track her down than when she was a nobody in Lowtown. By headcanonning that it happened just after Act 1, the comment at the end of Act 2 about how long it had been since Hawke and Bethany saw each other still works. In hindsight, it might have been better to play this one near the end of Act 3: sadness of Hawke's "talk" with ghost Mom (although it was nice to give the women of the family one last chance to all be together); set up for Inquistion (and shorter time-span between the two might have made more sense timeline-wise); and such. But I was still happy with how it worked out playing it when I did. MotA - Played it first thing in Act 3, but again pretended that it happened between acts, shortly after Act 2. These reasons as well as the fact that Hawke is able to use her new status as Champion and Belle of Kirkwall to get Meredith to let Bethany go with her. Meredith might not have liked it, but Hawke title-dropping while making the request, especially if she did it at one of the banquets in front of the right crowd might have forced Meredith to grudgingly agree to the request. I just don't see the hyper-paranoid Meredith of late Act 3 letting any mage leave the Gallows to go to party in Orlais. (And yes, I believe Hawke took Bethany with her. That whole thing of Meredith randomly sending a mage to the hunt/party just never made sense to me regardless of the act). Taking Fenris with me after they slept together but before reconciling, I thoroughly enjoyed both how protective/worried he was over Hawke, and his jealousy of Tallis. I like to think it's part of what helped Hawke be willing to wait for him for so long - even if he wasn't ready to handle any sort of relationship, he still showed he cared for her in his own way. And playing as if it happened not too long after the Arishok fight led to some fun snark from Hawke when Tallis started talking about how to Qun wasn't that bad. Blaze - I wondered if Leliana would recognize you if you played it after that quest. Didn't even think about the fact that how the Emile situation was handled could work its way into Dulci and her daughters' conversations (at least I'm assuming that's what you meant). I do definitely plan on playing around with timing and companions in future playthroughs.

I always do both in Act 3, for a few reasons:
1. Act 3 is very short, so the DLCs help make it feel longer.
2. I prefer having Hawke go to the MoTA party as the great Champion of Kirkwall than a common noble.
3. The Legacy DLC feels like closure to Hawke's story and ties in nicely with Inquisition.

The MotA the best right when the Act3 starts, what means to me: it happens between Act2 and Act3. Hawke is (in)famous enough, they probably tired from the problems, and the city, the social things. While this is also related the nobles, and like a "social invitation", also seems like the old shady adventures – fun. A family vacation far from Kirkwall. Legacy also good in this time, or later, or at the end of the Act2, before Leandra's death.

I like to do them right before The Last Straw, I do this entirely because as Varric is leading up to the end of the tale of the Champion the 2 cutscenes of Cassandra going "Wait what about time Hawke did all of this?" make the most sense to me. I also laugh thinking of how annoyed Varric must be to have his climactic ending interrupted twice.

Just curious. Did they ever fix the corrupt game save problem that happens after playing these DLCs that causes issues when transferring your saves over to Inquisition?
If I transfer my save files over after finishing the main part of DA2, and THEN go back and play the DLCs, will that work?

Bit late to this but you don't actually import your save from Dragon Age 2 into Inquisition. dragonagekeep.com/en_US/worldvault/ is the website used to recreate your decisions from Origins and 2 to import a save into Inquisition. So you can do the DLC whenever you want, it won't affect Inquisition in any way.

This has been a helpful thread, and I appreciate all of the thoughtful responses.
For this go, I believe I will do both in Act 3, MotA early and Legacy late.
