So around 27 seconds, the light blinds you a bit and you lose focus like it a distraction and then you are hearing a distorted version of what is going on around you or hearing something else entirely maybe. Is this ever explained and I missed it or is it supposed to just be something as mundane as you were excited, focused on landing, a rehash of SAM not being fully integrated? Every time I play the game I wonder if it is supposed to mean something, but nothing seems to come of it.

In one of the responses to Liam that you can choose, Ryder will say that he thinks he's still messed up over his father. When Liam presses him about it a little, he says it's like he's still hearing him in his head (or something close to that). I think the distorted voices are there to fit in with that particular response.

IIRC, the sounds during the landing cutscenes are quite messed up some times (e.g. hearing Aya city ambience while we still see the Tempest approaching the planet in space). Could just be a bug.

I don't think its a bug, it seems very intentional. Its probably what UpUp mentioned. That is the one dialogue I haven't done in that scene, so I was unaware of it. While emotional I think works for a variety of scenes I'm not sure I like it for telling a subordinate your problems.

Oh, sorry, you are right, just re-watched it and this does seem very intentional. Hmmmm... I am also not entirely clear what this signal actually is, that Suvi and Kello are talking about there in the beginning. Is it from the vault? I mean, they shouldn't actually need it because they are going to the known coordinates of Site 1 anyway. But if it is the vault, and if SAM uses "multisensory neural collation", whatever that techno babble means but it has neuro in it, so maybe Ryder is hearing that signal through SAM? Well, it's weird.

I think it would be a pretty big leap to start implying something like Reaper indoctrination going on between Ryder and SAM. As I implied, it's merely an indication that Ryder IS distracted and it takes a second for him/her to focus in on Liam as opposed to what other extraneous conversations and other noices might be going on around the bridge itself. He/she is simply not at the top of his or her game. It's understandable regardless of Ryder's actual response to Liam. He/she has just woken up in a new galaxy, undergone a traumatic fall from space, lost his/her father, and been promoted to Pathfinder... not to mention having recently been dead for 12 seconds.

Hm it just sounds like modulated echo of what Suvi said, and what was said in the background... like Ryder is day dreaming for a while

Yeah it totally could be just day dreaming, its his "what" that gets me. The tone, it doesn't seem to be directed at Liam, like hmm what did you day Liam but more of a what the heck is going on here, a what is this phenomena.
They never go anywhere with it as far as I remember in the game, so just day dreaming, not focused, under stress whatever makes sense and is the most likely answer. But, every time I start the game(which i just did again)it just stands out to me like it should be something and should go somewhere.

Maybe it was meant like in ME1 there are the scary and sad sounds/jingles that play suddenly over what ever is playing at the moment in the game? But they didnt use it? I dunno, kinda awesome find, I never thought about it much..

It is a Bioware game. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the first time the player heard, very bad, the Ryder family Motto.

Ian Frizer (MEA lead designer) commented on this topic about two years ago: Well, since you asked, I do have a question, but Idk if Ian (hey, Ian! Wassup?), or anyone else can answer it. In MEA there's this part when you are about to land on Eos for the first time. Ryder is looking out the window; large star glare; Ryder holds up their hand to block the light, and then these....whispers start. Ryder is hearing something. In their head. Trance like. And if you pick the line option about still feelings the effects of...recent events, Ryder says that they're hearing stuff in their head. Besides SAM. Then that was all. What the heck was that about? Ahh, good question. Rather than just tell you the answer, I recommend you play through the Ryder Family Secrets questline, and when it's over, look back at the scene you asked about and the final scene on Habitat 7. I think things will click. Source: link

Partly probably because I can't make out anything in the sounds. Just listened to it again and still don't make out anything, so how nothing I can make out relates to the family secrets is beyond me. Anyone with good ears want to chime in on what you are hearing.

I think he just means that Ryder is remembering subconsciously what his dad said as he was fading back into unconsciousness before the shuttle picked him (them?) up on Habitat 7 after the accident. Maybe he was hearing both SAM and Alec speaking but it wasn't clear enough (because SAM was trying to hide it) for him to understand.

In one of the responses to Liam that you can choose, Ryder will say that he thinks he's still messed up over his father. When Liam presses him about it a little, he says it's like he's still hearing him in his head (or something close to that). I think the distorted voices are there to fit in with that particular response. I, too, originally thought the scene had something to do with Ryder's less than successful landing on Habitat 7 and them being nervous after their last attempt resulted in being spaced in the atmosphere. Having recently seen the emotional response, I have to agree with what UpUpAgain said. Here's the emotional response for those who have yet to see it: As a sidenote, did anyone find it odd that despite being a planet plagued with lightning storms, we didn't actually come across any "lightning glass" (or other formations that result when sand is struck by lightning) while on Habitat 7.

Considering I can't remember sand on Habitat 7, but rather stone and (wet) earth (and vegetation) and what seems to be water. No, not really. IIRC this kind of glass is formed only in rather dry sand. When there is water in the ground, the electrical current from the lightning will dissipate through that, and not melt the surrounding material.

Come to think of it, we did crash-land on a mountainside and were on top of a very high and steep mountain. So if wind and rain storms up there are in any way comparable in their fury to the lightning storms there, you'd also expext much of the sand and the smaller particles to have ended up at the bottom of mountain over the years.

At first I thought after playing the game and finding out about the Jardaan that it was them communicating through SAM. Though afterward thought it was just Liam being a douche as usual -in exploding a firecracker right in Ryder's ear causing the ringing. Though... I put this through some filters in Audacity. After a bit it kind of sounded like an echo of what Suvi was saying.
After even further filters it now sounds like it is saying: "Help me my friend Ryder."
Filters: Default Truncate Silence change.
Default Distortion change.
