That it was Bioware since BG2 was my favourite game at that time.

Well around the time Origins was being marketed I was still playing ME1 and became a huge fan of the game. So hearing that the same developers were making another game made me interested. But it wasn't until I seen the marilyn manson trailer for the game, that caused me to become excited and actually do more research on the game. That trailer, with his song "The New Shit" is what sold the game to me. You'll never see Bioware with a trailer like that ever again. For those who don't remember it, or never seen it. Well here it is. ^ oh damn I remember that trailer, it was epic I also remember how each trailer back then ended with a part of that song, loved it not a huge fan of Manson though, but the song fit the trailer well
These days I tend to show new trailers to my mom, she loved the Inquisition ones (she's not a gamer though, she just likes fantasy)

I'm a sucker for playing solo with a game that is story driven and has deep characters. The genre is also a factor. What really hooked me was from a teaser cinematic of a character and she was Morrigan. No other character in DA:O could compete with her acerbic wit.

I had followed what was known of Dragon Age for a few years and I was curious what they'd make of the idea of "traditional fantasy with a twist". I thought their setting worked very well, and the story reasonably well, when I finally got to play DAO.

After having abandoned gaming for a number of years in pursuit of other adult interests (primarily career and home ownership and the associated responsibilities), I decided to get back into gaming, and bought myself a PS3 for Christmas 2010. I knew absolutely nothing about the games available for it at the time, so I asked the associate at Best Buy for recommendations. After a brief discussion about my gaming tastes, he suggested DAO.
I took it home and started it up, and was immediately hooked. I didn't get much sleep over the next few weeks - lol - completely immersing myself in that world and my warden. Though I admit to a degree of nostalgia glasses influence, I still consider DAO to be a masterpiece, and probably my favorite single game.

I'm not a very good gamer.
I'm just going to admit that. I like books, and I like very few sorts of games. Others, I'll watch if a friend is playing, but don't have much investment in. I NEED a character creator to be happy -- at the very least, to choose from a few templates and tweak their look. I've tried, but I can't do set protagonists. I need a world that gives me a reason to care about the characters I create. I need the characters to have some personality or direction of their own, or else I literally wander off to write, so the game needs to do some heavy lifting on "why do you care". But not too much, or else I get annoyed with being pushed. I like difficulty within reason, or else I get bored and wander off. I want good writing, character selection, a bit of a challenge, a story that feels collaborative and reactive to what I do, and a bit of the ol' razzle-dazzle.
So in the long dark times between Mass Effect 2 and 3, I wandered into a Gamestop and stared at various titles, trying to find one that seems plausibly interesting to me. The saleshuman directed me at Dragon Age 2 in the bargain bin, which probably should have been an obvious choice, but since I'm terrible at finding games that please me, I hadn't noticed. He convinced me with "Mass Effect, but dragons!" Though, much like Hawke, I was secretly sad to learn that I could not BE a dragon in Dragon Age (Tell me honestly that being a dragon wouldn't make for awesome gameplay), I did quite like it.
So I got Origins too and I love 'em both and then I ...enjoyed... Inquisition, so that's my touching Dragon Age story.
PS. If you know other cinematic RPGs with snappy writing and character selection in a cool setting that aren't from Bethesda (I'VE TRIED), please tell me.

My wife played DAO and I had already played Mass Effect. It looked good. She said she tried it cause she read you could play as a chick and romance a chick. Go figure.

I had the UE version of DAO in my steam library. Why I bought it or even if I was the one who bought it, I honestly cannot remember. At any rate, I had it for a long time, then a couple of years ago, I finally get around to getting a better gaming PC. I decide, "You know what? I should probably get around to playing some of the games I have in my steam library" and DAO was one of the ones I installed. Of course I never got around to playing it. Then, less than 2 years ago, I decide that I should probably find time to actually play some of the games I installed earlier. Don't know why I chose to start with DAO (probably Dragons, always had a thing for them). Anyways, I start playing and instantly I fall in love with the game. I love the story, love the characters, love the fact that I can become friends with my companions. When Alistair shyly asks Leliana about wooing a girl and I realized he was talking about me my warden? That moment was SO different from any RPG I had played before. (Well, I had a romance in NWN2, but we don't talk about that backstabbing SOB ) I got so hooked that I bought DA2, so I could continue the journey. When I was done, I quickly bought both the DLC for DA2 and Inquisition and it's DLC as well. I barely finished Tresspasser when I had to go on summer vacation with my family (Mere months after first playing DAO). I admit that I had withdrawals (hence why I ended up here, I needed to get my fix somehow). When we got back home, I finished off all the side stuff/DLC of DAI. When done with that, post game depression set in and I ended up buying MET and all DLC (as well as MEA, I knew it wasn't as popular as MET, but it was relatively cheap and I wanted to give it a chance). I think I barely had finished MEA when the Game Awards teaser was hinted at. So all in all I'd say (almost) perfect timing for getting into the series .

I picked other. I was a teen just starting to properly get into gaming, and I read a review for DAO in the GamesMaster magazine (which I've just found out isn't published anymore ). The review wasn't particularly positive, but I was intrigued nonetheless (mostly the swords & magic, ability to play as a female, and build relationships and romances with companions). The next time I was in my local games store I happened to see it on the shelf and bought it. Read the booklet on the car ride home and played it asap. My first playthrough was abysmal, since the only RPG I'd played before was Final Fantasy X, and I was worried I'd be unable to finish the game even though I played on casual. But I got better on my second playthrough, and came to really appreciate the world, the story and the lore of the game. When I later heard DA2 was coming out I was excited, but ended up forgetting about it for a while. It wasn't until I saw it in shops that I realized it had been released and bought it. And a little while after that I decided to give Mass Effect a go and fell in love with the trilogy too.

He is set up as a romance, but alas, no matter what you do, it ends the way that it does. Unfortunately I never got around to playing the Expansion, so my memories are limited to the pain my Skara felt as she realized she had given her heart to a betrayer.

as I said, I personally like to wait to the expansion in order to romance Gannayev, he's fun (he's a bit similar to Zevran in terms of personality)

That it was Bioware since BG2 was my favourite game at that time. Yup,, this was before Bioware's fall, so the brand name was still a solid endorsement. In addition, it was being peddled as a "spiritual successor:" to the BG games, which made it all the better to me.

The genre. I grew up playing Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, reading Tolkien and R.A. Salvatore. My uncle introduced me to DAO - all I really saw was elves and humans in armor with a bunch of sparkly status effects - and mentioned that the elf was bisexual and that's literally all it took for me to want to buy the game.

It was a Bioware Game. Didn't look at any reviews, gameplay footage, anything, just pre-ordered it.
BG2, NWK1, KOTOR, ME1, Bioware was on fire at that point, they had plenty of credit built up with me. Makes me sad when I think about their current state.

After a long burn-out period playing JRPGs, followed by an unhealthily intense period playing Too Human, I was whining to my husband that I never got to play as a woman. I could do it is Arcanum but now it was chainmail bikinis or Bayonetta for supposed lead females. I didn't play much of anything for a while, a little Burnout: Revenge perhaps, but I had all but given up on RPGs.
One day, hubs comes home and hands me DA:O. "It says you can play as a woman," he says. My first character was a mage and I screwed up her life royally, dumped by my beautiful pixel lover who then fed himself to a dragon to save her, anyway.
The following year our children learned everything lime of the game by heart, we played it so often. The stupid character limit led to us learning how to download saves onto an SD card or whatever the hell it was. Then, I heard these geniuses made a sci fi game. I hated what ME3 did to some of my most beloved characters (Shep included), but the Dragon Age universe has never let me down.

It was the BSN that brought me (very late) to DA. I started with ME which eventually led me to the BSN. Ppl here seemed to really like it so I wanted to see what the deal was.
