I hate to bring a real world scenario into this thread but by funny coincidence I could have risked being sued by Iron Maiden if I'd complied with a request from Vince Vaughn's lawyer regarding use of one of my photos in a documentary he made about murals in Northern Ireland. I'm reasonably friendly with an artist who painted a quite famous version of the above picture of Eddie on a wall in my home town (including some local embellishments), and had posted it on flickr, with full attribution to both the local artist and the original creator, whose name escapes me now. The lawyer wanted me to grant authority to use the shot, but in so doing I would have to claim copyright on absolutely everything included within the photo, and relinquish said copyright throughout the known universe and beyond, with respect to all media, including those to yet be invented. No exaggeration. All for $80, if memory serves. I politely explained why I couldn't do such a thing but they just kept responding that it was standard practice in American law. I gave up trying to have meaningful communication with them in the end, but to this day I don't know if they went ahead and used the shot, which I had stupidly uploaded in reasonably high quality. I'm now wondering if I should just have said, "GRAAAAGH! LOOK OUT VINCE VAUGHN!!! IRON MAIDEN GONNA SUE THE SOCKS RIGHT OFF YOU!!"
