So...I noticed there wasn't a thread yet about this character
and seeing as he's one of my favorites, I thought I'd launch one myself
to launch off the thread, here's one of my favorite fan-arts of the man himself
it's also spicy, I don't regret a thing
So whether you ship him with your Warden, befriend him (or kill him) or salvage family friendship as a Cousland, here's a thread to talk about Nathaniel Howe, post fan art and what not

Despite of the first impression, Nathaniel becomes a very good friend, who dedicates himself to GW duties, takes them very seriously. I really like this character.
Also I like a phrase from Oghren: banish Nathaniel first, then you meet him all of a sudden and he asks you to recruit him. And here Oghren reminds how similar it is to Zevran recruitment (Oghren comment just killed me, considering Zevran is always my LI.)

I had the same reaction (Zev is also generally my favorite romance)
first few times I've played I conscripted Nathaniel, but I like it a lot better for him to return on his own his reaction is a lot calmer and kinder when you do
I also love Oghren's comment Oghren: careful, this one might just go all Zevran on ya me+ my Warden(s): *thumbs up* sounds good to me

Shoulda been romanceable in DAA. A huge step up in the maturity dept from Alistair and, while initially setting out/thinking to kill the Warden, not actually a killer like Zevran.
It's been a while since I played femCousland, but I headcanon them two making googly eyes at each other growing up as one of the reasons dear daddy Howe sent Nate away.

Although I like the idea of letting him go and him later joining willingly, I love conscripting him on a Zevran romance just for this line: Nathaniel: You like having Grey Wardens who want you dead? Warden: Some of my best friends have wanted me dead. I just picture Zev showing up at Vigil's Keep at some point, and Nathaniel recognizing him as a Crow - which leads to this conversation: Nathaniel: *watching Zevran suspiciously* Be careful of that newcomer, Commander. I think he's a Crow, a member of a band of assassins. Warden: Oh don't worry, I know all about his past. And he's not a Crow any more. N: How exactly do you know him, know you can trust him? W: Easy, he's my husband. N: *takes second to process this new information* No, I mean, how did someone like you and him meet? W: Oh that, he tried to kill me *said very matter-of-factly* N: He... he what! W: *shrugs* What? I told you some of my best friends have tried to kill me. N: ..... W: Actually have your father to thank for us meeting, he's the one that hired Zev after all. N: ..... I also like to think of F!Cousland having a girlhood crush on him, and there having been talk of betrothing the two of them (before Arl Howe essentially disinherited him). My happy head-canon world is a duel-Wardenverse, I imagine my Warden Commander Tabris letting Howe stay in the cell while she consulted with Queen Cousland before making her decision. And off to find some fan art...

I like Nate a lot and wish he could return, but IIRC he can be killed in DAA so it doesn't seem likely. He had a great voice. Every time he called Velanna "my lady," I would get a bit envious. He also had a nice relationship arc with the Warden, going from suspicious and antagonistic to extremely supportive and loyal (a la Sten and Miranda). He was part of my favorite 3 rogue team along with my DW city elf, Sigrun and Arcane Warrior Anders to protect the rest of us. It was fun to watch him slumming it with three irreverent commoner goofballs and taking it very well. In my headcanon Nate (unbeknownst to him) is Loghain's son, which is part of the reason Howe mistreated him and his mother. (Nate has Loghain's nose, brows and hair and looks very little like Rendon Howe, IMO.) Of course, this would lead to some truly uncomfortable conversations with the Warden. Nate: In the end, I'm glad you recruited me, Commander, but sometimes I still feel remiss for not avenging my father. Warden: Oh, Rendon Howe wasn't your father. Nate: What? Then who...? Warden: Teyrn Loghain. I found your mother's diary hidden in my room. Nate: Loghain? But ... You killed him, too, didn't you? Warden: Uh... Nate: You killed BOTH of my fathers! Warden: I'm sorry, I didn't know you then! They needed to die!

Nathaniel Howe didn't like his mother and grandmother, in fact, he preferred his father. Probably his mother and grandmother were even worse than Rendon Howe, that came out when Howe saw hos mother's portrait on the hall's wall. He asks the Warden to take away the portrait. Poor Nathaniel. He loved that woman in the dungeon of the Vigil's keep, who became ghoul. She raised him. And at least he has Delilah, she's a good sister. There's a line with the Warden, the Warden can ask him: "Do you have any fond memories of your family?"

He`s one of my favorite companions in DAA! One of the things i like about this character it`s his relationship with the warden, evolving from hostility to friendship . And it was great to see him again in DA2 even if it was only for a quest. Some banters with him that made me smile : Sigrun: I found something under my bed at the keep. Something tells me it's yours. Nathaniel: Miss Maggie! I remember her. She's not mine--she belonged to my sister, Delilah. Miss Maggie was her favourite doll. Sigrun: Miss Maggie appears to be missing her arms. Nathaniel: Delilah and I had a fight. Then I ripped off Maggie's arms and hid them in places where Delilah would find them later. Sigrun: What a sweetheart you were. Nathaniel: So you have a sister? A younger sister? Velanna: That is no secret. I've mentioned her several times now. Nathaniel: For the longest time, I thought my sister was dead. When we were children, she put beetles in my blankets. She would laugh to hear me shriek. Velanna: Seranni liked to put sap in my hair. She also pushed me into an icy river. Twice. Nathaniel: Ouch. Velanna: Hmm. Yes. Why did I want to rescue her, again? Oghren: The whole "quiet and stoic" thing must get you a lot of action, huh? Nathaniel: I take it you are an admirer, Oghren? Oghren: What? No! No, well not unless--no! Nathaniel: Good. Then I needn't worry about getting too drunk at camp. Oghren: Heh. Okay, I like you. Just not in that way.

Shinobu I've read that theory in some other places as well (the one about Nate possibly being Loghain's son) though thankfully Loghain is alive in my canon, so the two of 'em could meet at some point
--
Catilina Nate also has a good relationship with that elven groundskeeper Samuel saying he's overjoyed to see him again and thankful he stayed on Samuel also seems fond of him, calling him "little Nate"
though I'm curious how his relationship with Thomas was in the few times he mentions him he only says Thomas was a bit of a rowdy person who loved alcohol and "could find his fun almost anywhere"

to add my favorite Nathaniel banter Sigrun: Cheer up; no one loves a grump. Nathaniel: For a dead woman you're remarkably perky. Sigrun: I could be less perky if you like. 'The darkness of the Deep Roads is seeped into my soul. The world is dead, my heart is black. Alas. Woe. Woe!' Nathaniel: Let's stick to perky.

In the end, after all his losses, he remained himself, and became a GW from whom others could take example, he was true to GW cause to the end (I hope): again, one of the characters whose fate is not shown in the game, though he was even your companion. His losses didn't break him, only made him stronger imo. That deserves respect.

And if the Warden says, not sure it was very wise thing to say, he answers, it's better if he lies? Great.

Not every person is able to make jokes or at least some funny phrases in his situation with losses. Would like to have him in DAO tbh. Would have been different dialogues but would like the same outcome as in DAA ((don't care about romancing him - "to be or not to be" - try or not not try - whatever), but as a companion I think he would have fit just fine in DAO.

but yeah, if you let him go he returns during a random encounter on the world map Nate: you...just let me go, despite what I said or might've done...I want to know why Warden: *depending on what you said while letting him go* I...already told you why Nate: I see. Take me with you, make me a Grey Warden Warden: wait...whut?
I think its a nice contrast to the hissy fit he throws if he's conscripted Nate: no, absolutely not! Hang me first! ^ I like to think a more snarky Warden would be all "if ya like, we can get drunk afterwards" (seeing as hang can also mean being drunk... )

LadyofNemesis, do you know if it's possible to get the "some of my best friends have wanted me dead" while letting him go, or is that only when you conscript him? Been so long since I've played Awakening I can't remember.

I'll have to start up my Cousland save to be sure, I'll get back to you on that
Edit: so I went and had a look at my save file and you can only use the "some of my best friends have wanted me dead" line if he's conscripted if you let him go he asks the reason why you let him go despite him confessing he wanted you (the Warden) dead depending on what you told him when you let him go you can either say "I already told you why" or "I felt sorry for you" (plus a few other lines)
As my Warden let him go she told Seneschal Varel "He's not his father. Let him go." and when Nathaniel came back she replied with "I already told you why"
after that he asks to become a Grey Warden, and you can say you agree to let him try (or not, though not really sure what happens if you refuse )

but yeah, if you let him go he returns during a random encounter on the world map Nate: you...just let me go, despite what I said or might've done...I want to know why Warden: *depending on what you said while letting him go* I...already told you why Nate: I see. Take me with you, make me a Grey Warden Warden: wait...whut?
I think its a nice contrast to the hissy fit he throws if he's conscripted Nate: no, absolutely not! Hang me first! ^ I like to think a more snarky Warden would be all "if ya like, we can get drunk afterwards" (seeing as hang can also mean being drunk... )
Well, when DA4 is close to release, I have something new to do while waiting.
