So, with no ME news from biovar around the corner and this MP forum growing rather stale, we need our own ME3 ending thread. This topic has not been covered neeeearly enough and as faithful ME fans, we should of course have our own take on it. After all, this subforum is supposed to discuss everything from kitten gifs to avatar bewbs. Here's my own solution to the ending - in no way perfect but it would IMO remove the worst blunders. Advantages:
Improvement by subtraction; It would take a minimum of effort to do this since it would primarily remove existing content. No canon ending needed; biovar could still make a ME3 sequel in the MW with Shepard as the protagonist Lets get to it, here's what needs to be removed. Explanation follows in the story section. No more starbrat! This entire scene with cyclical logic, red blue green space magic and nonsense bordering insanity goes out the airlock. Good riddance. The game goes as usual with the beam run and TIM dying but ends where Shepard is sitting next to Anderson. No Extended Cut. This half-assed attempt to put out the dumpster fire gets nuked. What's important here is to get rid of the Normandy rescue scene before the beam run. It raises more questions than it answers and is unnecessary. The Normandy crew mates allready in London stays in London. Unfortunately, the EC beam run is the only chance we have in 3 games to kill off that pesky T'soni Asari. Welp, as I said, this is not perfect. The slideshow and the epilogue voice overs will still be needed though. No cutscenes of Joker leaving Earth, trying to outrun some RGB beam and no landing on some obscure planet. This nonsense also gets the airlock treatment. Now, to the story.Shepard and Anderson are sitting on the Citadel, watching the space battle unfold. The Crucible fires. We can still have that visual representation of a beam coming from the Citadel, engulfing planets and moving throught the mass relays. Just reuse those assets, that's fine. The Reapers stop dead in their track, not firing at anything anymore. The reaperfied organics just fall over dead. Cutscenes show the Reapers totally inert, both groundside and in orbit. The same happens to EDI and the toasters if they survived Rannoch - no response at all. We get the explanation in the epilogue or maybe save it as a little hook for ME4: The microphone MacGuffin was a hacking device, messing up everything with Reaper code, causing it to crash. Plain and simple. No need to overextend the lore with technobabble biovar just need to retcon later. Do something vague where the Reapers just go "format c:". Choice
It will basically just be the severity of the war before the Reapers shut down, based on the player's EMS score. We can keep 3 outcomes as we have currently. biovar can tweak this as they see fit. Each outcome will be presented with voice overs and a slideshow. Minimum EMS: The fleet Shepard has assembled is completely annihilated and the Normandy is destroyed. Planets are scorched and Shepard and everyone we know dies. This world state can't be imported into ME4 much like in ME2 if Shepard dies in the suicide mission. Maximum EMS: Happy ending. The fleets are severely damaged but able to limp back to their homeworlds. Shepard, The Normandy and the crew in London survives (even that pureblood T'soni - goddammit). Medium EMS: Something in between. Those who survive are the ones critical to the narrative in ME4, biovar's choice. No more, no less. We end up with the same world state while at least retaining some illusion of choice. Now it's just a question how long it takes the MW races to recover. What happens in ME4?
Up for grabs, really. The Reapers are "braindead" and a lot of them survived "physically" intact, much like the derelict Reaper in ME2. Maybe a Hanar cult wants to ressurect them. Maybe someone tries to reverse engineer their tech and gets indoctrinated. Maybe some survivors cry out for them to be pushed into the nearest star. The template is there with Shepard alive and the relays intact. We no longer have the arc of the Reapers but that worked fine in ME2. It was just a bunch of shortstories. Spread your fanboy praise or spew your hate over the fact that you can't bang the Edibot in ME4 or didn't get a boss fight against Harby with this ending. Or figure out how we get rid of T'soni (should have just left her in that bubble in ME1). I've done my part. Or maybe I just ripped off everyone elses ideas without even knowing it. Maybe I'm indoctrinated or blinded by hate of that T'soni chick. Whatever, it was all in good faith and all in the name of shitposting... Bonus content for ME4: Who will be the next gay guy aboard the Normandy if Cortez died in London? Plenty of ammunition for some YouTube SJW clickbait vids, everyone loves that stuff. #MoarShepard #MoarClay #MoarMicroTransactions #JustRetconThatShit #BiovarPls

Red, blue, green finale starts, then a quick cut to Shepard opening his eyes in a strip club. He fell asleep cause he/she was stoned as fuck after partying hard. He is now surrounded by krogans head-butting walls, mumbling salarians, naked turians showing their flexibility, rolling voluses and asari strippers. He is not even an alliance soldier in fact he is a pimp. Mass effect trilogy was all a dream and Mass effect 4 will be his quest for credits and technology to recreate that perfectly engineered Miranda’s camel toe he dreamed about feat. even more asari strippers and bangable characters. Also some hanar sexy content available only in the Japanese version. Got to make everyone happy this time.
I like the giant microphone just being a hacking device, which at the end of the day is what it is, if it wasn’t for that obnoxious kid. Also I really like the idea of groups or entire species hunting for derelict reapers to reverse engineer them (salarian especially), opens up a lot of possibilities for many different plots. That cult thing is really interesting… or even more shady stuff like in the Cerberus sanctuary mission or I don’t know, terrorism with reaper technology in general… but I also like T’soni man, can’t be with you if you want to remove hot babes from the game. Next gay dude would be admiral Hackett (please no).

Sheesh Lars. not often i get to hesitate with the ole like button. but this time... so much hatred for Liara so very very sad. simply can't believe it , never could've thought you had it in you.... so much dissappoint. You know well that everyone agrees, Liara's the best. So go and educate yourslef, bsn.boards.net/thread/160/fever-blue-waifu-thread. Not as comprehensive as the original but should be enough. Come back when you realise the errors of your ways. Remember Blueberries are love. Liara is also, the obligatory

And c'mon, everyone knows Jacob is the best romance. Don't worry everyone, I'm sure biovar will continue to cram their precious blue girl down our throats in every fookin ME installment yet to come. She even got a cameo in Andromeda...

Hey larsdt , I felt like I owe you a more serious answer since I’ve derailed your thread. ***Warning*** wall of text ahead (still in broken English tho, read it with Super Mario voice if that helps) ... I think there's one thing that works in that ending out of nowhere, the first time you have to make that choice, no matter how you feel about it, it makes you reflect on everything you did in the trilogy; it's intense and confusing before being what it is, a rushed deus ex machina. I played the trilogy just once for now and way after it came out, but the impression I got after the ending and after that beautiful citadel dlc especially, is that besides being clearly out of budget and time to deliver the game, they likely had a lot of conflicts regarding what Mass Effect was about. They showed their love for the characters and their potential during citadel but hard decisions to make due to bad planning are probably the reasons behind everything wrong in mass effect 3 and all of that culminated in the finale. Making a trilogy and respecting a tight schedule without a shared and defined long term plan and with changes in key personnel it's hard. Fan service works just till a certain point. Sometimes real life problems can ruin space magic. Besides my stupid jokes, what I really think is that unless they decide for a remake/reboot I doubt they're going to change that ending or something else in a new chapter so I never really thought about “what if” till now. When you make hard decisions, you end up being proud or broken from the consequences cause you have to deal with a lot of bad stuff and that change you. Bioware in fact is still searching for a new identity. For Shepard, in my opinion to defeat something like the reapers a great sacrifice is required, so someone has to die and well, it's his/her role. There’s plenty of stories to tell in the mass effect universe so he/she could make some sort of cameo, but it's too hard for Bioware to have him as a protagonist again in a possible sequel. If they choose to, and I’m not against it, they will have even harder choices to make ahead. As I said previously I like your ideas in general; giant microphone being just a hacking device, derelict reapers all over the place and the possible consequences but unless they choose to retcon for real from a specific point or they go nuts and pick a canon ending, ME trilogy is what it is and nothing will change it. Too many consequences for doing it, too many people have different ideas about it and the risk is very high. I hope whatever direction they choose that at least the gameplay will be more similar to ME3, good gameplay is the key. No matter what happens though, this game was and still is a unique and special experience that touched deeply so many people. If we are all here still playing it and/or pissed about something we didn’t liked, there is a reason. Till they shut the servers we also have this amazing multiplayer, which is so good that transformed people just playing single player games into multiplayer addicted. Gameplay is so much fun despite all the flaws and playing it with good friends is even better. “It’s been a good ride.” “The best”. Obligatory TL;DR:

Lars. It was about the thread title. i misread u, not sure about larsdt OT The whole trilogy was about the reaper being the absolute overwhelming threat that would require miracles and huge sacrifices. It s more or less subtitled at each corner that shep is the christ figure whose sacrifice could make the difference. I would have been disappointed if he didnt had to fulfil that destiny. I m with @scarletj5 . (btw, new commer here or new account ?) As for the ending as it is, it s a bit rushed and some details suck, and the cinematography is poor. But the main line (reaper cycle to reset organics) is still here and the three choices are ok with me. Even the starchild discussion doesnt feel bad afai remember. I dont remember when we learn the reaper cycle is to reset organics ? It s a bit pushy but cool enough for me. Sure i would have liked to see what Drew Ksomething had in mind with his dark energy stuff, looks like it would have been better. But seems a lot of BW producing was for AI focus i guess ? Anyway, great sacrifice, 3 options and stopping the reaper cycle are 3 cool points for finishing the trilogy. Again, sure i would ahve liked a tremendous cut scene with great music as shep closes it, but i m ok like this. Small hints about the aftermath for the MW would have been nice too. as for some of the cutscene with our crew, it s quite bad, so i would prefer them on earth whatever their fate. “It’s been a good ride.” “The best”.

Hey larsdt , I felt like I owe you a more serious answer since I’ve derailed your thread. [...] Not to worry, you can't derail a shitposting thread , any content is appreciated. If we are to be serious for a moment, I agree with your take that people are passionate about this game because it touched them deeply. Specially those who still hang around the BSN forum. I just wanted to poke a little fun at this passion. Fans want more ME and imho sometimes get carried away in their creative efforts to have the game they want. Tbh, this is not something I've been spending long sleepless nights contemplating. Fans getting riled up about the ME3 ending was just a good example, so the OP kinda wrote itself. The trilogy is what it is and has been that way since 2012 but some still can't let go of Shepard. Oh, you sweet child of summer... So innocent, thinking that the ending was what was wrong with ME3... Hey, as the thread title says, its a word wall allready, so I had to paint things in broad strokes . Couldn't go into details about the entire game. And I beg to differ. I've been delving into the SP forum threads and the message is clear: BSN wants more banging. Yes, even salarians and 800 pound reptiles. Fans feel the ending is wrong because Shepard should have been out there getting laid instead of talking to the starbrat. So much banging potential was left behind in ME3 like the rest of the Normandy crew, the Citadel council and the volus pizza delivery guy. I suspect biovar allready knows how to rectify this in the future: All romances will be locked behind a 20$ paywall. Or a loot box mechanic where you get the romance build up to a random NPC and a random sex scene in another loot crate. That way fans have to buy them all to get the romance they want. EA execs will be clapping their greedy little hands. btw. am I the only one who read it "THE WORLD WAR"? What author? Lars, have you played modded ME3 with JohnP's Alternate MEHEM?
No, MEHEM was incompatible with some other mods I used. It's been a while since I've played the SP campaign so maybe it has been patched since. I'm aware that some mods remove the last scene. As I said, maybe I just stole someone elses idea... Lars. It was about the thread title. Huh, maybe because it's written in all capital letters?

OT The whole trilogy was about the reaper being the absolute overwhelming threat that would require miracles and huge sacrifices. Yes. And then you learn that the brat sat on the Citadel the whole time, able to shut the relays down and doom you. The game was rigged from the start. You never actually overpowered the Reapers, the thing allowed you to put resistance and you did well enough to convince it to shut itself down. You're on its grace, which is disappointing… but actually makes more sense. Yes. Death brings closure. There are many people whose complaint about the endind is that Shepard dies. I could understand it if we weren't living in a (post-)Christian world… but we are. I can approve on the general idea but disapprove on the details. The "organic-synthetic" conflict is ill-defined, those categories are useless. The Thorian is more similar to the pre-Legion geth than to humans, in its corporeality and behavior. IMO (I can elaborate why) the line of conflict is between intelligent life that is tied to a specific body vs is not. He himself admitted that the vision was only vaguely sketched but IMO would probably have been indeed better than the hasty generalization error we got. Yeah, seems so.

Where s sovereign btw ? lol it s old shit for me. ANyway, dealing with the absolute threat, it s a very thin line to walk, as an author, at some point u ll have to hide you have artificially made your hero survivable I can approve on the general idea but disapprove on the details. Well, i m not there yet, i think the difference between synthetic and organics is huge. Maybe less in a post AI world, but i lack the concept to visualize it like you do. He himself admitted that the vision was only vaguely sketched but IMO would probably have been indeed better than the hasty generalization error we got. Do u think he didnt had already his "reaper purpose" in mind ? I m pretty sure he had, but might even have signed something when leaving BW...

Yep, I fully agree (I’ve finished the trilogy around December 2017/January 2018 and started to play MP around the same period, so I’m very late to the party and an absolute newcomer). Again I agree on pretty much everything, it could have been much better, it could have been much worse. I mean, given the really harsh conditions, they did what they could and somehow it works.

U sure it s up to that point ? For all i know the reapers themselves could have been the citadel. Not exactly because there was a possibility that it simply feared being discovered when someone on the station goes to investigate and discovers everything after the relays go offline. Destroyed in the battle of the Citadel. If you meant Harbinger, you dodge his lasers in London during the final run. Yes, and it's also easy to overdo and write too many of such conveniences. "Then we thought, let's take it to the next level. Maybe the Reapers are looking at a way to stop this. Maybe there's an inevitable descent into the opposite of the Big Bang (the Big Crunch) and the Reapers realise that the only way they can stop it is by using biotics, but since they can't use biotics they have to keep rebuilding society - as they try and find the perfect group to use biotics for this purpose. The asari were close but they weren't quite right, the Protheans were close as well. Again it's very vague and not fleshed out, it was something we considered but we ended up going in a different direction." ( www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-06-19-ex-bioware-writer-discusses-dropped-ideas-for-mass-effect-trilogy-ending ) I don't think he had. The last ME thing he worked on with BW was ME2, and not even until the end. People keep bringing up Haestrom as an evidence that the Dark Energy plot was set up but this mission was linked to nothing and wasn't even mandatory. We can only say for sure that something was launched by Karpyshyn in a book he wrote already after leaving Bioware, where he links the Reaper interest in humanity with biotics.

I just dont remember where sovereign was sitting/sleeping for the cycle or where does he steps out. Hum, i searched and that is not in the story at all There was a gas nebula called Perseus Veil isolating part of the galaxy where the geth moved after the war with quarians. I remember reading somewhere in the codex that Sovereign hid exactly there.
Edit: wiki check somewhat confirms this with "A leaked classified Spectre report claims that the dreadnought Sovereign hid near the Veil before initiating the 2183 Citadel attack."

Destroyed in the battle of the Citadel. I just dont remember where sovereign was sitting/sleeping for the cycle or where does he steps out. Hum, i searched and that is not in the story at all – Vigil theoretizes that he travelled a bit once in a while (the rachni queen's words imply he influenced them in the past), but in the end batarians found him asleep behind the Veil around 2164.
