I played 10 hours of trial back at the release, and had fun tooling around in my Interceptor. Fast forward to.. well.. today-ish, and I picked it up and I've put a couple more hours in. At this point I've just been faffing about in freeplay and doing the various story & side missions, and haven't really progressed beyond opening the 4 Legionnaire Tombs and picking up the next mission in line. Yes, I haven't even finished the main storyline, and this is early stage stuff, but I've just been looking in the 'Today in Anthem' thread and I have to admit, I have no idea what anyone is talking about in there - I'm lost on the terminology. Can anyone point me towards some sort of recommended 'help regack understand what the heck is going on' kind of resources? I don't think we have much here, or it's buried and I missed it

It's hard to point towards something for basically total beginners. Most stuff requires a bit more knowledge I think. We often have new or returning players ask questions in our Discord. Vulkk has some good content for Anthem as well. On Youtube you might want to see if some of YourAnthem's videos might help you get up to date on a few things. Obviously you are always welcome to watch my videos as well although it is only gameplay which won't help you that much right now probably...

I actually did see some of yours already, since I was peeking in the 'today in anthem' thread. The gameplay is useful from a "what I can expect" point of view, also that I've been soloing everything up to this point. Some of the rest of it will probably come with time, but I'll check out the rest of what you linked and see where I go from there. Thanks for the quick response!

Sure thing. I deleted most of my older videos except 2 cataclysm runs which might be helpful for secrets and stuff since cataclysm is in rotation again now, although just with 3 events currently and usually a pain in the ass playing with most randos. Vulkk has guides about it too as well as for the seasonal strongholds that were going on the last few weeks (but are not anymore right now). My lastest videos is all newer stuff and I added the loadout first and wrote down some details so for some general build advice it might be helpful. Even if you don't have the gear you might get an idea about what to look out for depending on the direction you want to go (or can/must go because you get good stuff for that kind of build).

Agree on Vulkk guides, if you're looking to figure out all the hidden extras without spending hours looking for them, that's where you can watch the run of it. Also good for each Stronghold (basically a dungeon with the big bad guy at the end which can contain spoilers (kind of) if you haven't finished the main story line as it reuses "levels") You probably hear about inscriptions a lot - modifiers on an item which boosts certain stats, and "god rolls" which is where you need to sacrifice a small nation to the RNG gods who will then bless you with like, maybe +85% armour vs 10%. Items (weapons/cosmetics/everyhing else) comes in tiers - common (white), uncommon (green) rare (blue) epic (purple) masterwork (orange), legendary (also called limes due to colour, which is yellow). As you go up in rarity, the items get more inscription slots. Here's the kicker though. A masterwork item can be better/more useful than a legendary, due to it's inscriptions. You could finally get the item you want in a legendary, and guess what, you got 2 x + whatever reload speed % and + whatever % pick up radius. But your masterwork item could be something ridiculous like +80% damage and + 80% armour. Thereby your legendary item which you've spent a 3rd of your lifetime hunting for, is rubbish . Other than freeplay and strongholds, there's also replayable missions from the game, obviously legendary missions will be harder and give better rewards. Also minor spoiler alert for those if you haven't done that part of the story line. Cataclysm was this big arena of where you needed to do all these small events as such, and if you wanted to get the high scores on it, you would to need to read up on the best ways / orders of doing it all in for that sweet sweet multiplier bonuses. Icetide was a seasonal event like cataclysm but on a stronghold per week where there were more things to do in each one than standard. Also in freeplay as well. Also seasonally decorated for what that's worth For both cataclysm and icetide you were given major/minor crystals for currency to use in the vendor store. Some players have multiple pilots - this is more for RP'ing than anything else, as it doesn't grant any bonuses as far as I'm aware. Unless you've been playing from the start and got bugged collectibles, as they add up across all pilots. You can also unlock multiple javelins as you progress, yay more grinding for items! Items and weapons (to a lesser extent) can be either javelin specific or universal (this is noted on the item), and you can use the same equipment at the same time on all your javelins. Only Colossus can use heavy guns. Each javelin obviously has its specific advantages, colossus is the tank, storm has the fun "magic", interceptors are agile and fast, rangers are all rounders. All javelins have their ultimate abilities- aka god mode for a limited time so you can crush your enemies in a satisfactory manner. This recharges over time and can be buffed by certain inscriptions. I'm trying to think of any of the other stuff we talk about there, anyone want to correct anything I've said (its been a while lol) All in all, i didn't feel like anything was well explained by the game, i basically learnt it from playing it repeatedly til I figured it out . You could try googling anthem basics or on YouTube, but I don't know off the top of my head anyone to recommend specifically, or anyone one stop site.

You've already been given a lot of good advice, so I'll just pick and choose a few incidentals... Check out the official patch notes page. When reading old posts, be wary that some stuff has changed (thus, the above patch notes). I actually preferred Food then Games videos for the Icetide seasonal versions of the SH's. She also did the vanilla versions. Guardian Token rewards (you'll now see them mostly in the Weekly challenges section of "Path to Glory", marked by yellow diamonds) are currency you can exchange for 80 rating Legendary Gear at the various Legionnaires tombs (with a bunch of crafting mats). Do NOT use them till you reach L30. If you do, you only get a +5 gear that you'll outgrow quickly. Crafting is generally worthless. Save the mats for the above (and use for making sigils (mission consumables), if you need them. This is personal bias: but I suggest playing through ALL the campaign (and side quests) solo first to get the full game lore & dialog. Do it with others and it'll go quicker, and you'll get more loot. But you'll be rushed and miss a lot (well, what passes for "a lot" in Anthem's modest campaign). That really just means avoiding Legendary Missions (which I think you can't get anyway till you play them?) and the Heart of Rage stronghold. Do you know about the different defenses, and how different attacks (physical/elemental, impact/blast, kinetic/acid/frost/fire/lightning) are affected by them? You can find tables on that (including Vulkk's site). Don't sweat the gear as you level. At 30, you'll get a huge jump in capability when you start getting L61 Masterworks (actually once you start getting L56's when you reach L25). Then, it's all about getting the L80's with good inscriptions. As you probably already noticed, it's all about getting combo's. When you get deep into endgame, you can also make effective ultimate builds as some MW+ gear give good ultimate "speed" (recharge) buffs.

What DD (and everyone else) said.
I did the story both solo (with my #1 pilot) and with friends (using my #2 pilot). While I had fun with my friends, the story works better doing it solo. Except for the stronghold and freeplay elements, you can set it to private and enjoy the story, without someone else trying to rush it along (by fast forwarding through the cinematics).
Once you've finished the story and you've gotten to higher levels where playing with teams makes sense, there are several nice folks out there who play regularly in groups and would enjoy having you join them. They'd help you with builds, "secret" cat stuff and lessons learned from playing the various elements of Anthem.
