Haha, no no, not THAT. I do some gunsmithing, that exposes me to cobalt salts (bluing), lead fumes, epoxy fumes, benzol etc. I usually do that outside in the summer to avoid exposure, but I could do that in my garage using the half mask. I can't do that with my full mask as vision is not good enough to allow me to do precision work while wearing it, and it prevents me from using a magnifying glass. So no yellow overalls then... Bluing is a cool process, but all that boiling in sodium hydroxide would make me nervous.
On topic, several news outlets have reported that the Pfizer vaccine looks promising. Fingers crossed!

On topic, several news outlets have reported that the Pfizer vaccine looks promising. Fingers crossed! Yeah but I will stay the hell away from any kind of mRNA vaccinations till there is sufficient long-term data available about the possible side effects. Experimental medical compound with little to no testing? Yeah, count me out of that, I'd rather wear a mask for the next 5 years or risk an infection before taking experimental vaccinations. I will watch all those beta testers (actually more like Alpha) closely for the next couple years, see how they do before I make a decision.

I think it's okay to be a bit cautious and wait until the jury is out; the safety of the vaccines remains to be seen. And I'm afraid we'll be wearing masks for months if not years to come, as the vaccine won't eradicate the virus, but rather make contagion less likely.
In software development terms I'd say the vaccines have reached closed beta and are about to go into open beta phase. Then there'll be a pre-release or early access period before launch. Better exterminate those bugs I say...
BTW, all vaccines are first experimental.

Better exterminate those bugs I say... BTW, all vaccines are first experimental. Since mRNA is a totally new way to get virus bits introduced into cells using nano particles this is nothing close to a beta version. This is more like a working concept, and since the test for normal vaccines is about 4-8 years, this isn't even an alpha version. Its pre-alpha. In the past 10 years anything brand new on the market, no matter what kind of product it was, was totally bug-infested and only started to work after many more months if not years of development and improvements - which were the result from the criticisms of the customers. Heck, nowadays I buy stuff only after its been on the market for at least half a year. I see absolutely no reason to assume that it will be totally magically different with this vaccine. Problem is, if it turns out that its also has some issues its YOU who is bug-riddled and glitchy as fuck. I don't want to be glitchy, and I'm a relatively closed system, I cant be patched! At this point I rather trust my anti virus software to deal with that virus, instead of using this experimental brand new software. And my mask firewall.

As a method of improving human immune system, mRNA vaccines are new. And nobody want's to be glitchy; however I'm glitchy now and it was the bloody bug that did it. So there's that to consider as well. Given the option, I'd rather take the vaccine than the bug.
Continuing in IT terms, covid is a zero-day virus. By the time heuristics kicks in, it's too late, and on top of it all our av software starts to shred the PC apart. So keep those firewalls up folks!

A stressful 24 hours has ended.
There was a community case with no immediately apparent link to the border, who went to a bunch of places while infectious (including her work after getting a test...).
Turns out there is a direct link to an existing case and no close or casual contacts of the new case have tested positive.
Not great for the nerves, but hopefully it acts as a wake-up call for a country that was getting WAY too complacent about the whole thing.

Here in Austria the government just decided to do another ''hard'' lock down next week to safe the December Christmas trade since the daily new infections rate has nearly reached 10000 every day. Its not official yet but the lockdown is expected to last 2-3 weeks (naturally) Of course that's gonna hit our economy super hard again
Acceptance for measures like this have slightly risen in the general population, since very simple calculations were broadcasted showing how the ICU units of our hospitals gonna be at 100% capacity very soon and what is going to happen when they do. (triage, shortages of medical supplies and treatment etc.) Also most people I know who thought this was all some kind of conspiracy or hugely over-exaggerated flu virus are starting to wake up now that most have friends who have/had covid19.
Experts are pretty pessimistic though, they expect the infection rate to go down temporarily but absolutely skyrocket in January because of the holiday and wintersports season and they expect things to become as bad if not worse again. So do I, judging by the behavior people have shown in the past 6 months this is exactly whats gonna happen.

*sigh* Afraid that is a sign of the times … I know you are very leery of the vaccines, but unless we get the majority of the world population vaccinated, this is going to be the norm … with resulting economic as well as medical consequences. I for one am looking forward to the availability of vaccines, it will get my vulnerable family members out of their hidey holes and back into the world. They've been cooped up a long time now … with many more months of the same in their near future. Yes, I am looking forward to a more normal life for me … I've severely clamped down my life to protect them … but mostly, I'm worried about their physical decline, exacerbated by their isolation. Thank goodness for Sasha, without her, I think they'd be basket cases by now. The pupster is a hero and she doesn't even know it (AFAIK).

I cannot say I'm leery of vaccines, I'm leery of all experimental drugs that are rushed out with nearly no testings done, breaking all rules of proper medical procedure bearing completely unknown long-term dangers. Those rules exist for a reason, terrible mistakes that ruin many lives did & still do happen. Vaccines are great, they are among the most potent weapons against those single celled never-do-wells, got plenty of vaccines myself, all of those were tried & true compounds that stood the test of time. But with my current life style a MRNA covid19 vaccine is totally unneeded. I'm not entirely sure if a vaccine is the only way out though, China and Japan seem to have everything under control (with China having recovered economically), I think with enough discipline, foresightedness and logical thinking we could have gotten it under control as well. The past 6 months everything happened as I had foreseen it, not because I have the mythical ability of clairvoyance but because I'm able of rudimentary logical thinking. Too bad that so few in politics seem to have this basic human(*) ability. (*) Which only supports my theory that politicians are in fact LIZARD PEOPLE!!!!

My intent was not to imply your skepticism to any vaccines, but specifically to the covid vaccines currently in development.
As far as China is concerned, with state run media, I don't trust anything they report … plus authoritarian states have a bit more, umm, authority than democracies to enact restrictions.
And Japan? I think island nations such as Japan and New Zealand can secure their borders in ways that continental nations cannot. Hawaii in the US is in a similar situation. One might include remote locations, like the Antarctic as well.
Overall, I think there is a whole lot we still don't know about the virus and the effective counters to it. Medical professionals are doing the best they can … treatments have improved tremendously, but I think we are still fumbling around with detection and prevention. It seems like we gain some insight, act upon it, then discover it's not that effective or that our entering assumptions were faulty.
I think that contributes to the "pandemic fatigue" that some folks have. It's easy for me to call for patience, but when you are a small business owner that is going under, due to restrictions that at times seem arbitrary … or you are a blue collar worker who can't work from home and has lost most income for the last seven months … it makes it very tough to be patient.
As far as the idiocy of the "lizard people" … I don't expect that to get better … so I'm counting on the vaccines to dig us out of the hole. There will be adverse reactions, we will discover the downsides to some of the vaccines, some folks will die … but I'm afraid that is a risk we are going to have to take and it's better than the alternatives.

We'll never be able to do contact tracing adequately. Too little social trust, too much distrust of authorities, be they political or scientific. On the plus side, looks like vaccine distribution is going to be ramped up slowly enough that most of us won't be able to get any until the safety and efficacy are proven.

Give a man power and watch him abuse that power. Give people freedom and watch them live in peace and prosperity.
And yeah, I'm counting on vaccines being a waiting game.

If the distribution of the vaccine would take 5 years then I would agree. There were many cases where long term side effects only started show many years later, or triggered stuff finally revealed itself that late.

A peer of mine is going through a vaccination trial and has received his over the last few months and he seems not to have suffered any cognitive impairment. of course, a single case (that I've viewed) is the exact definition of anecdotal. He's a resident for radiology, and he says a lot of people are coming out of COVID with scarring to the lungs. :/ That's not anecdotal.

Since both my parents are in high-risk medical categories, I'll be happy to get a vaccine as soon as it's generally available. I'd rather risk side-effects than risk passing COVID-19 on to them. (Not to mention that I'm not very keen to risk the virus on my own behalf, either.)

(Not to mention that I'm not very keen to risk the virus on my own behalf, either.) I think many people underestimate the broad range of possible side effects of experiemental drugs. There are light ones like fever, aching joints and all that, but there is also another category like triggering chronic auto-immune responses. The latter has happened with several experimental and not sufficiently tested drugs and vaccines, we are talking about debilitating nerve diseases (multiple sclerosis and other demyalinating diseases) and the confused immune system attacking your own organs till they are destroyed. That stuff fucks up your life. I'll wait how you guys respond before I consider taking it, just make sure to post a health report every week my little lab rats.

Funny, this is day one of the second lockdown. I went to the grocery store to get essentials, on the way to the store I saw pretty much all kinds of random shops are still open, and that there is as much commuter traffic as usual. If I had not been told that there was a lockdown I would not have known. I spoke to friends, they said most people don't do home office anymore and the workplaces are staffed as usual. Also, when I called business partners and customers I reached them all in their offices, not homes. During the first lockdown in April the streets were empty, everyone who could do home office was allowed to do it and did it, almost all businesses were closed. This time its VERY different, despite the same rules. People are tired of it all and use all kinds of loopholes to circumvent the rules or flat out ignore them. I know some companies and shops that are officially closed but call customers and say they can come anyway, when they arrive they quickly wave them into their sales rooms and to business as usual. They even turn their lights off not to attract attention. The really disgusting thing is, businesses that are officially closed due to the lockdown reap tax benefits and monetary help from the government (they cover up to 80% of their losses) when in reality they are still open doing business. I know a couple cases personally, but I have heard that's common practice now. So far so bad.

I waited 5 HOURS for a Walmart pick up yesterday because apparently everyone in the universe is once again panic-buying all the things since my state is going back into a 2 wk partial lockdown starting tomorrow.
On the plus side, my waiting impatiently netted me my Thanksgiving turkey and another package of TP (there were other things too but those were the most important!). So, I guess it was worth it.

Yeah, this is getting out of hand everywhere. The kindergarten my son goes to had a positive case. Here's hoping there is still some immunity left from last spring. And I'm seriously hoping we won't be going to another quarantine. Come on killer T cells! You can do it!
