When and How to Use MasksI'm going to bandanna myself for today's grocery trip. Whether it's coronovirus or cold, it's day 9 and I'm still coughing a little bit. I highly doubt it's coronavirus due to the lack of fevers. Back when I was in the military I served in the NBC corps (Nuclear, biological and chemical warfare unit), we mainly trained fighting with heavy respirators (Gasmask) and a full NBC suit, gas raid drills, nuclear decontamination drills, Sarin and VX drills. (much fun that was ) Over the years I got me all the equipment I used back then just in case I ever need it (I live close to several ex iron-curtain nuclear reactors in very dodgy condition), but I never expected a pandemic. Anyway, whenever I go to places with lots of people, like shopping (though I get most of my stuff delivered) I am using heavy respiratory protection, that is my RD40 M65z Nato mask with P3 A1A2B2 RD40 filters. They have a Level 3 particle filter followed by a 10 centimeter thick layer of activated charcoal, which gives a 99,95% filtration rate for organic and inorganic gasses and of course viruses (trapped in water molecules). Yeah its a bit weird to go shopping like that, but I know young and otherwise healthy people who have contracted the virus and boy, they feel like TOTAL SHIT. If you are not one of those lucky people that hardly show any symptoms, its borderline life threatening even if you are in perfect health, and it takes forever to get better. This is 10x worse than any flu. Anyway, if you use such mask, proper filters and you know how to safely use it you are completely protected from contracting the virus. Problem with other masks is that the eyes are unprotected, and the virus trapped in water droplets that forms a mist gets in the eyes and then you have contracted the illness. A half mask, or those masks made from fabric is NOT proper protection against this virus. We did biological warfare drills day in day out, this is the only proper protection against it.

I've been sick for 9 days now and the fatigue is not going away and it's been freaking me out so bad that I now have serious panic attacks and shortness of breath all day in waves.
It's really annoying because I'm pretty sure my breathing issues are just anxiety. Whenever I manage to calm myself down I can breathe just fine. But I've never been this sick in my life and it's kind of scary with the Corona situation. I'm so tired I can't do anything. Still. Talking feels funny, so I can't even chat with my boyfriend to distract myself. Only makes me freak out even more. Sucks so bad.
Doesn't help that today I learned we have a possible case in the office. An unnamed coworker has had contact with a confirmed positive and is showing symptoms. Not sure when they got sick but management did say the individual was last in the office last Wednesday, two days after I got sick. So it seems likely it's my teammate who sits 2 meters away from me. His wife is a nurse. So that would make sense...
It's complicated though because said coworker was sent home anyway last week due to low work load. He was expected back today. Soooo no idea since when he's been showing symptoms. He seemed fine when I got sick. I felt sick before he did. So it seems unlikely my situation is connected. We don't even know it's him and he hasn't been tested yet. But who knows with vague info on how long before showing symptoms people are infectious.
Once I learned this my anxiety went through the roof, naturally. I have Hashimoto's and while it's not a serious autoimmune illness it is one. Now my mom who lives in the same house has the sniffles today and I can't stop freaking out.
I'm calling my doctor tomorrow so he can maybe check my lungs again. He did so on Friday and said everything was perfectly fine. This should helped me calm down again.
Sigh.

I'd rather take THAT risk than getting worse without realizing it and then getting hospitalized when it's maybe too late. I dunno. It's a shit situation. The anxiety is hell. I can't go through another week of thinking I might die and making myself feel worse and worse because of that for no reason. You've got a point though of course. My doctor didn't receive any masks and he said he's not even allowed to treat suspicious cases because of that. So just in case I DO have it, I don't want to spread it around... That's the other side of it.

I'll admit that I panicked in the beginning and when that happened it messed with my breathing which in turn would make me panic more. After a while I started to turn on some calming classical music like "Clair de lune" to relax me. I'm not saying for you to do this but you have to find something that calms yourself down, maybe watch a happy movie or play a game to keep your mind off it because you don't want to stress yourself. It's also good to talk to your Dr. and try to boost your immune system. You will most likely be ok! media.giphy.com/media/ZBQhoZC0nqknSviPqT/source.gif

I got the worst cold I've had in years two weeks ago and I can't ever know if it was Covid but I recovered just fine. I sympathize with anyone getting sick right now. I've had panic attacks as well in my past during a brief period, and it can be a real task to get your perspective balanced during such an event. Just trust your doc. If he says you're good, you're good.

Like I mentioned in the other thread, my day job is in a supermarket, so I'm officially part of an essential industry. We're getting a 10% hazard pay bump, plus as much overtime as you can stand while the panic buying continues. Although it's not really panic buying anymore. People are doing the sensible thing and preparing to self-quarantine just in case.
My days haven't changed much. I feel like I've got the good end of this thing -- except for the chance of catching a serious illness at work, of course. Speaking of which, a conversation I wasn't supposed to overhear informs me that one of the cashiers is out with a fever. Since his symptoms aren't severe and he's only 18, he's way down on the priority list for a test, so nobody knows if he had it or not. Not my department, but still....
The only thing I really miss is the bar scene; New York's bars and restaurants closed ten days ago. I'm pretty sure I'm drinking more now than I was when I could go out

I've read that here in the UK antibody home test kits (blood pinprick) are being assessed by the authorities at the moment if they pass their criteria they will be made available to the general public through Amazon and pharmacies. Use the kit by taking a blood sample then mail the sample to the lab. This would mean that people who have developed anti-bodies would be able to leave confinement.
On a similar note I have rediscovered a forgotten IPA home brew kit that I received as a Christmas present. This would be a good time to brew my first batch.

Do/did have a fever and I mean one that would be over 100 degrees?
Fatigue, have you been able to sleep? Can you take a deep breath, hold it in for a moment and let it out without any chest pain?

Our government has strictly denied the purchase and use of such tests because they say it is too inaccurate. It seems like everyone but us is using those tests, even Putin said they'll start producing those tests. Maaaaaybe, they are simply afraid of the number of infections that would be revealed with those tests, resulting in even more panic. You cant have more infections than tests.

Two members of my family caught the coronavirus.
The first is an old uncle over 65 years old, deputy president of an evangelical church. Of course a lot of folks gathered in churchs and coming from a lot of places, that made it easier for the virus. One individual with the coronavirus able to transmit to others around him. Now all these people have to be found in the whole region and have to be contacted, so they could be screened by Coronavirus's test. Won't be easy. Probably a lot are having the same issues right now.
My uncle fell ill and it suddenly and brutally accelerated, after a week or two, coughing first a little. His boss and friend, the president of the evangical church who fell ill at the same time as him, died two days ago. For the moment my uncle's health has stabilized. But he is far from being cured.
The second case is my cousin's boyfriend, half german- half algerian, only 37 years old, but he had lung disease a few months ago, so that might explain why he is touched ( though it is demonstrated that even young people could catch the virus even with a good health. ) He was diagnosed positive for the virus ten days ago, but other than a cold, weakness and a few coughs, there was little to worry about so far. The doctors told him to remain at home and to take care of himself. Yesterday, his health suddenly and brutally declined, he had trouble breathing, now he's in the hospital, with a breathing mask.
Obviously we can't visit them right now, and we are now waiting for more news.

As long as we're still in the distancing phase, a government should want people to be more afraid. The danger is that people will keep spreading the virus. (Insert joke about current US administration here.)

Seems Boris is fond of his litle catchphrases first it's all "let's get Brexit done" Now it's "Stay at home, Protect our NHS and save lives".

As long as we're still in the distancing phase, a government should want people to be more afraid. The danger is that people will keep spreading the virus. (Insert joke about current US administration here.) Yeah I saw the speech of Trump, I'm not sure if throwing all security procedures overboard hoping for a magical drug that cures it to simply pop up out of nowhere is the right approach to a pandemic. On the other hand, I do not know much about economy, if the containment procedures throw the US back into the year 1929 lots of people will be miserable as well. Though I think having droves of people die from the Virus would harm the economy a ton as well. In any case, this outbreak is gonna be the noose for Trump no matter what hes gonna do, media will make sure of it.
