I have over a dozen in my inventory from different places like those containers you can get near supply points as a perk and other places as well. But unless I kill an archetec or get it in a vault it doesn't show up. Is this a glitch?
Edit: To clarify they show up in my inventory but not in that mission detail thing that says you have some number out of 9. For example 1 of 9

I am not sure what you are having a problem with? The only time it pops up is after you get one, but it is somewhere in other assignments. Once you get 9? it would be under completed.

No it only shows up in that mission (detail thing) where it says you have some amount out of 9. I have gotten remnant data cores and they show up in my inventory but not on that mission thing. It's one of those things that drives me insane even though it isn't a big deal.

I remember seeing the same issue. From looking at the files for a bit, I only found out that the value that is displayed in the journal is incremented sometimes, and is completely separate from the actual number of cores in the inventory.

After looking at my current playthrough, where I have just finished the eos vault:
I have one data core listed in the quest, and six data cores in inventory.
Since this discrepancy is pretty large, and the six is already two thirds the number required for the quest, I believe that the data cores found random stashes are supposed to be something else entirely. Not the quest data cores. Though both are in fact the same and used for crafting the heleus armour parts. This use as crafting part may be why there are so many found in stashes, that do not count to the quest given items.

I have one data core listed in the quest, and six data cores in inventory. Though they share the same name, they're NOT the same thing. It's a bit confusing, isn't it? You find Peebee's mission cores in the vaults, in the crate dropped by any architect, and on Khi Tasira. The ones you find in various crates are not related to this quest.

The funny thing is: They are in fact the same thing! (game/items/research/materials/hunting/rm_remnantbehemoth)
Its just that the plot counter for the quest is not incremented when picking up random cores from somewhere.

Yeah. I told it's confusing, didn't I? They didn't care about details, apparently.

There is nothing wrong with that mission. The data cores for that mission are found in vaults and when defeating architects. They have nothing to do with the inventory ones you can get in random loot drops.

Unless "Remnant cores" and "Remnant data cores" really are the same thing. I always assumed they were different objects, but I never really tracked cores in inventory because I don't usually need one to build stuff.

I always assumed they were different objects, but I never really tracked cores in inventory because I don't usually need one to build stuff. There is another 'Remnant data core' or similar object, but that is a salvage object that also drops from random loot. The Remnant cores for the mission and the crafting object picked up in the wild are the same object, but only specific ones count towards the mission.
