Woof... finally, the deluge seems to be easing up. Well, they seem to be saying all the right things so far, I'm definitely down for it. Some little touches too, like mini-games and lots of customization. Curious to see how they implement base-building here. On the combat side: dual-wielding, shields, that flail looks damn cool, the not-so-hidden blade, "visceral" combat, raids... can't wait to check out some actual gameplay. I wonder just how "assassin-y" you can play. Right now, it feels secondary to straight-up fighting. Now these mercenaries you can create/share/recruit - I wonder if they're just for raids, or...? M/F protag, romances, tying in Isu/Norse mythology... sounds good to me.

I'm curious/worried about these harsh choices you have to face. Hopefully it doesn't force you to ransack innocent English settlements. Considering the era and that we play invaders...expect the game to make ransacking and killing innocence the morally good choice. I've complained a bit about it for Odyssey and other AC games, but you play an assassin, yet the game makes you look cool and paint you as the "good guy" so you feel morally justified by that horrible life choice. Origins is the only game that made it work by making it all about revenge and dark. After posting that, it seems the only things we raid are forts. Also raiding almost seems optional since you can also advance by making alliances.

I am also curious about how the narrative will portray the English. It's clear that they are wanting to explore the side of the vikings as more than just bloodthirsty raiders, I hope that they give the same level of treatment to people you will be fighting against. It's a very muddy time in history (both literally as well as morally) and I hope that both sides get fair, and unbiased, treatment. They said in an article that it will be very nuanced, so hopefully they do a good job.

Overall I was hoping for a bit more historical accuracy in the way they dressed, their weapons and armor, etc. I guess it's not a huge deal since that ship sailed long ago. We'll see if they get more authentic with regards to culture and story. Apparently it's early in the Viking era so it's Vikings vs Saxons. I'd like to see them represent both cultures somewhat accurately.

I find it hilarious how all the Swedes and Norwegians gamers are complaining about the Eivor name being female (well not exactly complaining, but pointing it out) and how they won't be able to play the game as male because of it. While everyone who is clueless probably think it's a male name forced on the female PC. I also found the game is set in the 870s. Straight in the middle of the Great Heathen Army stuff and they took East Anglia in 871. Of all the Kingdoms mentioned to be in the game only Wessex under King Alfred, the guy doing the voice over in the trailer, wasn't conquered by the mid 870s.

So they went more preset than blank slate. I expected as much, but still a bit disappointing. Guess I just have to hope I like this character's base personality.

They're bringing Layla back? I actually didn't have a problem with her in Origins, but her character in Odyssey left a lot to be desired. This is a problem the AC franchise has been carrying for a while now: either commit to the modern day storyline or don't, but don't half-ass it.

People have been complaining about the modern day stuff since the first game. I just roll with it. Although, I liked that in Origins you could leave the Animus at any time and check the computer. It had lore entries that updated as you played the game and once the game force you to leave it at the end, you don't have the time to check them. Other AC games plugged that directly in the menus and it feel so artificial. The first game started OK in regard to it too from what I remember of it (haven't touched it since 2007 and never finished it).

I actually didn't have a problem with her in Origins, but her character in Odyssey left a lot to be desired. This is a problem the AC franchise has been carrying for a while now: either commit to the modern day storyline or don't, but don't half-ass it. Agreed. I've played Origins, Odyssey, Syndicate, Black Flag, part of III, and I think I might be forgetting one... and while I understand the modern day elements are central to AC, none of these games felt like they were better for having them. This is now the third time I try to post this. I blame Ubisoft/Abstergo. Anyway...
The modern day elements were central to the AC story, but that storyline died with Desmond Miles. The fact of the matter is that Ubisoft could continue releasing AC games that are loose "historical" simulations with some mythological aspects thrown into the mix (as in Origins and Odyssey) and they'd be pretty entertaining (and grindy AF) games. Since I followed Desmond's story from the beginning, through Altaïr, Ezio, and Connor, I was particularly invested in the modern day storyline and hoped Ubisoft would give both the close they deserved. Instead we got a repeat of the ME3 ending but nowhere near as conclusive, leaving half a dozen plot threads unresolved. It's a shame we never got to see Desmond become the full-fledged assassin he had been training to be, nor time travel as was, apparently, the endgame (according to Nolan North who voiced the character). However, for some inexplicable, and probably stupid, reason, Ubisoft felt that bringing the modern day storyline to a close would spell disaster for the franchise. So what did they do? They dragged its reanimated corpse over to Black Flag, Unity, and Syndicate, in the form of this new, faceless, void, and ultimately meaningless, first-person protagonist, that they promptly ditched when they rebooted the franchise with Origins, bringing back the third-person protagonist. Unfortunately, the modern day storyline continues to feel tacked on, diluted across multiple media that Ubisoft encourages you to buy if you want to get the full picture (kinda like Disney's doing right now with Star Wars). So, yeah, I can understand when people say they don't want the modern day storyline because, as it stands, it's going nowhere fast.

Gear & Abilities:
Ubisoft Montreal’s last Assassin’s Creed game was Origins, which started the series down a path toward more RPG mechanics. How would you characterize the RPG qualities of Valhalla?
In terms RPG and player progression, we wanted a fresh take on it. We wanted something that’s more anchored in the world. So, the way gear works is completely revamped. Every piece of gear you find is unique. You can upgrade each piece of gear. If you wish to carry the same piece of gear to the end of the game, you can. Or if you want to collect everything, that’s up to you. Everything has its own unique value. At a certain point, you can start customizing gear. So it’s a new take on that RPG format in terms of gear.
In terms of abilities and skills, there’s also been a revamping. Players have this (quite large) skill graph that they sort of traverse through the journey of Eivor, picking up new skills, picking up a lot of playstyle elements to fine-tune to kind of Viking you are – whether it’s a more incognito Viking or more “get out there and throw your axes around.” Everything from abilities to skills to weaponry, we have a fresh new take on progression that we feel is anchored in the world and the Viking fantasy we’re trying to achieve.
So, would you say this skill graph is drastically different from the concept of skill tree, where you invest points and build up towards things?
I wouldn’t say it’s drastically different. It has a different form and a different wrapper. The content is what’s really different; the types of skills you can have and the synergies between skills is what makes it much more unique. In terms of moving through a skill tree, I wouldn’t say the mechanic of that is drastically different … our concept of how to craft your playstyle, this is where the content is different.
Do the enemies have defined numerical levels? And does the player?
As part of our fresh take on the RPG elements and progression, I would say it’s less about levels and it’s more about the sense of power. Based on the skills you have, you gain power. That’s how we look at that mechanism in the world; it’s really about your capacities and what you can do. Yes, there is a rating that is given, which encompasses at some point your gear as well. But it’s really about the skills you’ve learned, what you can do, and that value is rated. So it’s a sense of power rather than levels.

We also know now that the protagonist isn't the ancestor of Otso Berg that was mentioned in an earlier game, who lived in 793. AC Valhalla takes place in 873, 80 years later. I guess it could still be an ancestor though, we'll see.

Woof... finally, the deluge seems to be easing up. I agree about combat with the stealth feeling secondary to just going in and smashing things. That was probably my biggest complaint about Odyssey until I played the DLC was that I never really felt the stealth combat was that much of a focus aside from "we better put that in too". If they try to walk it back just a bit I think I can forgive it more then just leaving it like Odyssey.
