I’m experimenting with some shorter videos. Partly to ease myself into video making with a look at the critters of Thedas and partly to experiment with the DAI fly cam tool. My usual lore content is upcoming though.

Great to see you back in action! I agree that examining the lore behind the mundane, fantastical creatures (if that's not a contradiction) is fun. I wonder if any of those Nugs in Kirkwall did have the Blight? I think we should be told...
Your videos got me thinking - how many 'normal' creatures are seen in the computer games, apart from horses? I can't recall seeing any pigs, cows or chickens, for example, though I could be wrong.

Your videos got me thinking - how many 'normal' creatures are seen in the computer games, apart from horses? I can't recall seeing any pigs, cows or chickens, for example, though I could be wrong. I believe we’ve seen chicken, because I think the bird Shale stepped on upon leaving Honnleath was one, but I think the rest have been referred to in dialogue but unseen. I was actually a bit baffled by the Druffalo to be honest, because they seemed to just be filling the same role as normal livestock basically despite knowing there are cows in Ferelden. They just seemed redundant...

Well, there are cows and bison in real life - they’re both part of the subfamily Bovinae, according to Wikipedia - and a druffalo is really just a bison with fangs and dragon horns.
As for other “normal” animals aside from cows and horses that have either been seen or referenced, there are cats, rats, rabbits, (fennec) foxes, wolves, bears, bats, pigs/boars, deer, rams, toads, lions, mules and various birds like crows, chickens, hawks, pigeons, owls and ptarmigans.
There are also hyenas, but they don’t much look like real hyenas.

I get that, but I’m thinking more on the developer’s decisions. If you’re going to show us a farm with livestock in a place we know they keep cows, pigs, and chickens, why go ignore all those and create an entirely fictional animal?

I obviously am not a developer, but I would guess that they wanted a mid-tier non-aggressive animal wandering Crestwood and came up with the druffalo. Then they re-used the druffalo for Dennet’s farm because, hey, why go to the work of creating a model for another domestic animal when you’ve already got one?

I was actually a bit baffled by the Druffalo Do you suppose it was really a nod towards the Gruffalo in the children's story? They do like to pop in these odd references to real world media. Then the design team came up with something that was a cross between the Gruffalo and a Buffalo (Bison). Then they re-used the druffalo for Dennet’s farm because, hey, why go to the work of creating a model for another domestic animal when you’ve already got one? I think it was more likely they came up with Druffy the Druffalo for the Hinterlands first and then decided to reuse it in Crestwood. Perhaps they wanted to imply that all the ordinary livestock had been killed off by demons or eaten by the dragon. Wasn't there a sign somewhere that said the villagers had been appeasing the dragon with cattle and sheep? May be it didn't like the taste of druffalo so it left them alone.

There’s a Crumpled Note left by one villager (Walker) to another (Densing) at the ruins where the dragon perches. Walker tells Densing to feed his rams to the dragon while he goes hunting; a hundred pounds of meat seems to keep it complacent.
I believe that hermit lady, the one who lives by herself at the edge of the map, tells you it ate a bunch of pets and livestock. It also bit the head off a guardsman.

Even the crows are those funny crested things! Have we ever seen a non-mabari dog either? I guess the reason is that the developers want to immerse us in a fantastical world and one of the ways of doing that is to have Druffalos and Great Rams instead of cows and sheep occupying the fields. I haven't got problem with it - it's just a little quirk I noticed.

There is a non-mabari dog in the Denerim market. It shows up at the ending celebration in Origins. He made an appearance in Issue 2 of Deception. Leliana also talks about a little vicious dog that Lady Cecile once owned. You know, the one she kicked off a landing. Oh, and I just remembered: there are also squirrels. Krem talks about them.

I always thought it was implied that was Morrigan as she shapeshifted into a dog if we reject her offer. You could imagine her turning up out of curiosity but not wanting to reveal herself. Still that means there have to be ordinary dogs for her to have studied.
Thankfully they also decided to have normal horses, which I far preferred to the more exotic mounts, purchasing every breed available.
That merchant we meet on the road in DAO had a wagon pulled by oxen I seem to recall. And wasn't there another who was looking for his mule/donkey?

I accept that many 'mundane' farm and household animals are referenced, I just notice that none are ever seen. I suppose an in-world explanation for this, in Ferelden at least, would be that most of the mundane farm animals were killed during the Blight and so the farmers started to domesticate local wildlife as a replacement.

Cats and kittens too, don't forget about them. Cats are the first thing in my list. But I do need to add lions and mules.
