I'm trying to decide whether to play it again, as I have an itch to do, or just leave it for a while. Anyway, checking my NG+ Completed game save, it reads 16 hours 27 minutes. My initial PT took 36 hours 11 minutes. That tells me that the game was definitely clocking the lengthy pauses I took for my dog and other things. I expected it to maybe be under 20 hours, but 16.5 slightly surprised me. SofaJockey, Abby was sadistic when she tortured Joel. Otherwise, yeah, she's pretty level. For the most part, Ellie was only as brutal as her (admittedly self-imposed) circumstances required. Choosing to "make Nora talk" was a low point, and I thought they showed it very well. She was shaking and had the thousand-yard stare. Tears were tracking down her face the next morning as Dina worked on her back, and she finally whispered, "I made her talk." Argh. Gotta decide whether to play again. First world problems. EDIT: I've decided to play yet another Survivor+. I will have no pressure to collect coins or cards, so only supplies will matter. I'm going to try to keep my body count as low as possible. That seems an obvious way to make the challenge even higher. Given the keen senses of WLF/Seraphites/Infected on Survivor, I'm not expecting to have a lot of success sneaking through areas unscathed.

given Abby's sadism and Ellie's almost relentless brutality throughout the game. I mean, do either even have the means or right to simply 'walk away' from it at the end? In any case, thanks for responding. I saw neither sadism from Abby nor relentless brutality from Ellie. Puzzled where that idea comes from. Did you play the game? I haven't played the game Sofa, but it really doesn't matter given that YouTube is a thing! As for your refusing to see Abby's sadism or Ellie's brutality, one can't help but think it's only for the lack of trying. Expected better of you.

As for your refusing to see Abby's sadism or Ellie's brutality, one can't help but think it's only for the lack of trying. Expected better of you. I'm quite serious. I don't find sadism or relentless brutality to be a generally accurate descriptions of what happened, and I've played the more intense scenes twice. With Abby her attack on Joel was dispensing justice as any protagonist might give an antagonist a sticky end (from Abby's point of view anyway). I don't find Abby to be a sadist, though she did inflict a brutal death on Joel. Her friends urged her to stop it. She showed great compassion in other situations. Ellie is killing people efficiently and effectively, invariably in self-defence. Nora's end was very unpleasant, though as she was infected, it was inevitable. I realise you've watched some cutscenes but I find there is a very big difference between 'watching a movie' and playing characters for 30 hours or so. Watching the scenes together would appear to give a very distorted sense of the behaviour of these characters. That's not how it plays out in the context of a game.

Sofa, I've seen the game played from start to finish so I know enough to speak well to the things I don't like about it, with or without your acquiescence. As for the rest of your post, i'll leave it to the good people browsing the thread to decide for themselves whether Abigail "You don't get to rush this." Anderson displayed an unhealthy penchant for sadism when she decided to beat Joel to death with a golf club! If I were to concede a point here, it would be that Ellie's brutality can be mitigated (though not totally eliminated) by players who choose to play a certain way.

If I were to concede a point If I were to concede a point, I'd say Abby's treatment of Joel was deeply unhealthy. I wasn't at all pleased to find myself playing her mid-way through, but she won me around walking in her shoes. Perhaps that mitigates Joel's death with other more positive behaviour in my mind.

Game sales have been phenomenal, despite leaks, so I would see Naughty Dog being more than confident that they have a huge player-base they can take forward to a further instalment. On that note, it has been reported that Week 2 sales have dropped 80%. However, as the article points out, Uncharted 4 also experienced a similar drop (78%) in its second week and still reached 16 million copies sold worldwide on October last year. On the other hand, games like God of War and Spider-Man experienced substantially smaller drops in Week 2 (Spidey experienced a 42% drop in its second week and GoW a 35% drop). Time will tell.

The blitz of memes and mixed press is bound to have effects short term. Long term, we'll see. It's a really well made game, even if it failed to land with some of its target audience.
We know it sold well. I expect it will continue to sell, even if it never reaches the meteoric heights some might've envisioned prior to the leaks.
Since I don't really follow the industry in general, I was unaware of how public opinion had turned on ND in the last year. Much as with EA & BioWare in the recent past, it would seem conditions were right for the perfect storm. The only difference, I'd argue, is that ND didn't deliver a subpar game. One that told a story unwanted by some? Sure; but still a well told story with polished presentation.
EDIT: I've removed some of the UI for my current PT. We'll see how it goes. I don't find the default UI intrusive, so I'm mostly tinkering out of curiosity. I didn't even make it through the intro with Joel before my dog decided to interfere. He stopped me two more times before I could get to Abby's first appearance, so I've given up for now. It's going to be another one of those PTs, spoiled little shit.

It's nice to see all these games be so successful. TLOUII seems to me to be the sort of game best played immediately at launch to keep as many surprises as fresh as possible. I don't recall GoW and S-M being as plagued with so many spoiler discussions. As you say, time will tell. Anyway, I'm done. Playthrough 2 done (26 hours). The first playthrough was 36 hours because I expected attack around every corner. And Platinumed (0.9% completion). Enjoyed that.

Also, again with that false sense of superiority. Just seeking to have a thoughtful conversation, but also to challenge hot air that comes blowing by. Often you put forward perfectly rational and insightful points about different games. On this occasion considerably less so. How could it be possible not to have the superior grasp of the subject after having played the game (nearly twice) when you haven't played the game at all and are basing your assessment on clips and conjecture? I have no personal animus against you, but I think you've hugely misunderstood this game. I don't think it's unreasonable in a discussion forum to challenge (without being rude about you personally) the position you have shared. But let's not overcook the matter, I think it's clear we perceive the game differently. Then don't diminish or dismiss those who haven't actually bought the game. I've stated before, I don't critique things I haven't researched. I'm not going off of just some Youtuer's comments or the leaks, but off watching videos that have compilations of all the dialogue in the game. Not just cutscenes, all of it. But since I (and others since you've asked anyone who disagrees with you) don't fork over $60, apparently our views are of lesser worth. And trust me, I know from personal experience that this is better for conversation than if I did play it or was more invested in the series. If I was or did those, these views of mine now would seem tame in comparison.

I’m taking a wild guess that even if players have strong feelings either negative or positive, a good number will probably put it down indefinitely after a single run. Singleplayer games of considerable length are already kind of notorious for not having a whole lot of replays. A game with the level of bleakness on display and its particular brand of gameplay may not be worth a second sitting.

That is the problem I have when talking game sales to demonstrate the popularity of a game especially a sequel when looking at week one sales. To me those sales are mostly based on how people felt about the prior game and how much they enjoyed it while also falling into the category of not being on the internet to see. So the week two sales are generally impacted by those week one sales because that is when word of mouth happens and can make or break a game. Will lifetime sales match Uncharted 4? Maybe, but it really depends on how players overall feel about the game and not just the people who have time to talk about them online. In my cycle of friends one PS4 has now had the game played seven times at seven different people's homes and there are people that liked it, but the recommends are not strong even from the people that liked the game. Extremely small sample size I know, but just an example of what might happen.

I thought this was a great game. I would have loved a happily ever after ending but what we got was powerful. Revenge is not so sweet.
The game, like its predecessor, has so many interesting moral questions and ethical dilemmas. Pity the conversation seems dominated by the perpetually offended. We truly have become a right/wrong, black/white, left/right, win/lose culture and I find that both bewildering and very sad

I enjoyed it (played it twice) but I suspect I won't be going back to it in a hurry because once Platinumed I'm not sure it's that replayable (maybe before TLOU-III).
Nevertheless, it was certainly memorable, and even if you simply count 62 hours of play (36 + 26) that's plenty of value for money.
On to Ghost of Tsushima... 😄

I'll revisit this periodically as I do its predecessor. It's great to have yet another desirable game so close to release. It feels like an abundance of riches.
