After years of putting it off and some urging by a co-worker of his and myself, a friend of mine finally decided to give Mass Effect a try. He bought the first game on Steam yesterday and I was totally pumped to watch him stream it. The guy uninstalled the game after only about an hour of play and got the game refunded! He died before even reaching the tram on Eden Prime and that was it for him. His main complaints were the dialogue wheel and the constant need to click on Investigate each time to see a topic. He felt much of the dialogue was irrelevant and uninteresting and didn't like having to sift through bad dialogue in order to be able to give a good response. Lastly, he was turned off by the importance (kind of a need on harder difficulties) to tell your squadmates to use their abilities in certain combat situations. He wanted to focus on himself and didn't like the pausing to use squad powers or switch weapons. That was too disruptive for him.
He wanted to skip some of the cutscenes too... which kind of baffled me. I play D&D with the guy and he likes story and roleplay and I really expected him to like the game. Mass Effect 1 is pretty dated in terms of its gameplay in a lot of ways, but it's still good enough in the eyes of most fans. They come back for the story. I convinced him enough that he would enjoy the series much further as it progressed, he was just unwilling to suck it up, if you will and endure things he didn't like. LOL he said afterward that this only hurts him more now that he won't experience it, because he really wanted to like the game.
Finally he called it overrated and couldn't understand what all the fuss was about and spent a good amount of time reading reviews. He somehow felt the game was more open world like an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game and had more free reign to do whatever he wanted (all the Mass Effect choices you make that carry over; the deaths of squadmates). I got depressed afterward. I'm sorry I lost us a potential recruit. *Leaving Earth theme plays gently in the background*

"Live and learn".
Not getting feedback you want after putting so much effot on your behalf - it is your fault. Some part belongs to potential recruit.
Do not expect a person will become "you" in understanding and accepting Mass Effect just because "he likes story and roleplay". Not to mention "taste can change" and many other factors, you know nothing about, that can influence the outcome.
As Mass Effect fan of the first part included I do not like described reasons of not liking the game. Would have been really upset (to say the least) after spending a week or two trying to convince to play and not to rush with conclusions.
Only after getting such outcome the most what could happen now - will be upset for some period as efforts were in vain.
Now what, going to ignore that person only because of that?

TBH the first time I played ME1 it was a .. borrowed copy which always crashed on Eden Prime when the tram stopped. I also died many times before that because I could not understand the power usage yet, was trying to just shoot everything and no. I didnt much like the game at that point either yet, though the scifi and the beginning really tickled my scifi hungry brain.
But after buying the game and getting past Eden Prime I was instahooked when arriving to Citadel.

Well, if he didn't enjoy the slow pace and all the dialogue, than yea, it's just not his kinda game. I wonder why he thought the dialogue was "bad" though. IMO ME has some of the best dialogue in video games in general. Again, you kinda gotta go with the fairly slow pace and a lot of exposition in the beginning but what is said by the characters is neither irrelevant nor illogical or downright dumb. The voice acting is also top notch. So that would be something that would interest me if it was my friend, why he considered it bad.
In terms of gameplay, I get most of the complaints he put forward. I'd recommend for him to just play on an easier difficulty and with most automation enabled if he doesn't want to deal with squad mates but well, controlling them is just part of the gameplay of this series. One thing I also agree which is a bit weird in ME1 is the reverse difficulty curve. IMO the game is by far the most difficult in the beginning. On my very first playthrough I think I died for the first time right after the tram scene when you have to find the bombs. No abilities (especially if you put your first skill points in the dialogue skills to pass the first bunch of persuasion checks), your aiming accuracy is still shit and the cooldowns for the little your squad mates can do at this point are endless. And then they give you a timer to stress you out even more. That was pretty hard to deal with the first time when I had no idea yet what I was doing whereas at least after about the first half of the game it becomes pretty much a cakewalk especially if you skill in a half decent way. So yea, the balancing in ME1 wasn't that great, that's for sure.
Personally, I completely loved the game from the first second because the world drew me in immediately but honestly, I never thought Eden Prime was a particularly spectacular part of the game in any way, so if he didn't get into it for the world and the characters and if he is the kind of guy who'll just quit after an hour or so, than it's probable for the best and just not his kinda game (which is of course fair enough).

Dump this friend immediately It is odd that this person would like D&D, but be so impatient with Mass Effect 1. Last time I played D&D, I spent most of the night waiting for the spellcasters in the party to pick their spells for every damn round, so it wasn't exactly an action-packed experience. Though they were mostly new to the game. I was introduced to the series with ME2, and I did find ME1 a bit of a drag at times the first time I played it (though now I've played it several times and enjoy it). I wonder if he would have liked ME2 better. Also, if he didn't like having to pay so much attention to his squadmates, why not lower the difficulty?

Kinda wished I had your friends viewpoint back when I first played ME1, would have saved me a lot of hassle.
But what's done is done. Live and learn as they say.

Sounds somewhat similar to my first experience. I severely disliked the game. I couldn't get past the first train section on Eden Prime because the gameplay felt a bit clunky. Also, an assault rifle having the range of a shotgun and being so unsteady didn't help at all.
I dropped the game for a while and came back to it. Now its one of my favorite series. I had a similar experience with Dragon Age Origins. I never played a game like DAO before. I hated it at first. Now its one of my favorite games.
