DAV removed features from previous games. No control companion mechanic. Reduction in companions to take on quest's DAV has gone a lot further than that. Once I learned that companions don't have a health bar, they can't take damage and can't die, I had to take a moment just to digest it. Companions also do not draw aggro, all aggro is directed towards Rook. Yes and that's apparently a huge problem for ranged combat like mage or archer, I read! How is that good combat design?? I always play mage. I was literally debating whether to go mage or maaaybe archer... Apparently you get aggroed so much it makes mage gameplay frustrating. WTF is that?! Honestly, NO aspect in this game sounds well made. I loved playing space mage in Mass Effect. It was SO good in ME3! You could play ranged glass canon biotic or in your face vanguard, it was so much fun. I was trying to be optimistic that the Mass Effect-like gameplay was actually a good thing because I HATED DAI's combat. But if ranged combat really sucks ass then it's nothing like Mass Effect after all...

IDK how it sells on PC in the US, hard to tell. DAV is number 10 in Popular Upcoming and number 3 in Top Sellers (after COD6 and RDR) but it has not been on that 3rd place for long enough to get a lot of sales.
Clearly on the plus side: only 60 bucks, no microtransactions, fully playable and finishable at launch which is a miracle these days, low PC requirements, no EA launcher, recognizable franchise. The game is clearly marked at LGBTQ+ on Steam for me, which is not necessarily a bad thing for the majority these days.
The curators for me are kind of split. Top 10 for me: Sweet Baby Inc detected - not recommended Metacritic - OK Yes/No - OK Shitlisting Service - not recommended Wishlisted - OK Woke Alert - not recommended RPG site - OK Woke detector - not recommended Recommendation guy - OK True Game Truths - not recommended HDR games - neutral The list goes not infinitely but the trend continues. The list is individual for each group of Steam users, so it does not really mean much. I personally have not excluded any curators.
My impression after reading some Discussions threads is that most who bothered to speak up are waiting for user reviews. The thing is that these reviews at an early phase will be biased toward those who preordered and rushed to play and thus will be more likely to be generally positive unless some major bugs will surface.

Skill Up's review was a bleak vindication of all my fears. I've been doubting my own sanity as I watched in astonishment as people acted like it was all business as usual with Dragon Age, whilst previews showed a glib, gaudy caricature of what I understood the series to be. Of course that was quickly followed by the sad realisation that Dragon Age is over for me. Even without the scathing review, the footage alone is damning enough. My jaw is still on the floor at the level of whimsy on show. Over the years I've seen occasional bits of fan art that seemed like cute, whimsical fluff. Harmless fun, but nothing to do with the actual games. Yet here we are. Bellara like some burlesque nightmare complete with her own "charming" soundtrack. Taash every bit the culture war grifter's strawman come alive. Neve sounding like a reluctant first time D&D player trying to get into character. Worst of all has to be Rook though. Never has an protagonist been so horribly off putting, constantly prattling off unprompted lines like stamping on the face of role playing immersion.
MrMatty's review was when the sadness really kicked in though. Knowing he replays the series every few years, like me, and seeing the weight of emotion in his sheer disbelief at the game.. Wow, super depressing. Not even vaguely satisfying combat to sweeten the deal. And the bad news is right there in the positive reviews too - less RPG more action, the whimsy, the HR therapy session vibe etc...
Oh, and no greatswords either. Just the cherry on top of the shit sundae.

I wonder if the difference in reviews stems from the reviewers' opinions about the series.
I know mortismal gaming liked it, but although I didn't watch all of his review it seems like he wasn't a really big fan of the series, so the fact he likes it so much is not as reassuring as Matty's impression

I forgot who speculated that there are no Greatswords in Veilguard, it seems they are correct. So two handed warriors would be limited to battleaxes and mauls only, and no badass greatswords? Boring

People in the North clearly view the greatsword as the weapon of the southern swine. The question is will they be too embarassed to reference it in dialogue

When ever I get anything clickbaity on my Youtube feed, I simply click the 3 dots, and "Don't recommend channel". It keeps my feed nice and clean with only stuff I'm interested in. At this point this is just a slightly weird interest in what makes people gravitate so much towards this lame content... The content makers I get, they are completely cynical, but I don't get how come so many people watch these videos... But it's not big deal, just curiousity Dragon Age has been hot topic for a few weeks now. So obviously most content creators that specialize or are adjacent to video games will be talking about it. And while many are just riding the trendy wave atm, the fact that we are all getting those videos right in our faces means those videos are the ones being most sought after and getting the most engagement. Which is a good indicator of the general sentiment towards the game. There might be a big portion of diehard happy fans of Veilguard, but their engament pales in comparison to the people hating on the game right now. So those videos are literally selling like hot cakes right now. Simply put, they make money out of it. And at the end of the day, if it sells, it sells. And people ARE buying.

Paul Tassi for instance (writes reviews for Forbes and also a Youtuber), has barely touched the Dragon Age franchise. Mostly covers Destiny, Diablo and multiplayer games. He got a review code, gave DAV 8.5 and said he loved it.

Can't die? I forgot about that. Now I know what I will do on the highest difficulty. Stay in cover away from the baddies letting the companions do all the work. That's not right. Doing that would take the rest of the year to get past the beginning of the game.

A dev who is not overly familiar with the franchise, thus does not understand "dragon age words" in the dialogue, but otherwise is a pretty good channel imo.

Sheesh at least give us back companions who go down within 3 seconds because they are too stupid to seek cover like in the good old days, BioWare!

But real warriors carry around big fucking axes so I'm here for that.

Sweet Baby Inc - not recommended Woke detector - not recommended Wait, wait, wait...NEITHER of them recommend Veilguard? Yeah...saw it got an 80 from Metacritic....still doesn't really change my plan - I will play it, but not at full price. I will wait for it to come down at a discount. I still want closure to this franchise, and I might enjoy it...but probably as much as I enjoyed Inquisition, which was middling at best.

But he wields Greatswords. I really don't want to do sword and board or a mage again, and unfortunately, my Rogue play style will not work with how companions are I guess...what...accessories we wear into combat with?

I am an asshole. Mild Inky LI spoiler I've read a rumor actually Inky past Li get mentionned in a letter. Now I'm seeing someone part of the councel telling Solavellan to look EVERYWHERE in game, because there's something for them. And I'm an asshole, because I'm thinking perhaps everybody is just getting a letter, even Solavellans and I'm laughing my ass off.

I feel like there is a really unhealthy obsession for this specific romance choice in the fandom and it got seriously out of control So much that it is reflected in this game for all of us to see. And all the devs interviews in the past months.
