I don’t think it excuses BioWare, but as some pointed out online, it seems likely to me that the reason greatswords aren’t is because of the different animations they’d have required compared to what they did for two-handed warriors, which fit well hammers and greataxes. That was never a problem in previous games. Look at all the iconic greatswords we were given. They are still using Frostbite, so it is not as though they changed engines and this created problems. Any problems with animation should have been solved with DAI. It probably does explain why the two handed enemies are so predictable because they never use anything different either. Some animations are seemingly different now, though, and a few that I've seen wouldn't look great/would be silly with a greatsword.

Game looks so terrible I frankly don't care that it's unfair or not. Elden Ring had 30 Weapon Types and 311 different weapons, with literally half the time.

Weapons are just ability/combo tools now - hammers and axes can do a "slam the ground" ability animation but for greatswords that would look silly. That's probably all it is. Some animations are seemingly different now, though, and a few that I've seen wouldn't look great/would be silly with a greatsword. And those gigantic axes that are way too big to be realistic and are constantly slamming into the ground don't look goofy as hell? For me it is now all about the spectacle and flashy effects with none of the substance and realism of previous titles, particularly DAO. I'll admit that sometimes Fenris seemed to do moves that were OTT and his sword looked just a tad too big to be believable, but somehow I was able to suspend disbelief back then. Something about the current iteration hasn't felt right from the moment I saw some of the early game play videos and it hasn't got any better the more I have seen.

I think one of the reviewers made a valid point about how stupid some of the scenarios are with regard to a quest where you are meant to be secretly infiltrating a Venatori cultist meeting: So, the team are meant to be in disguise, yet whilst the majority of the attendees have their faces covered, you and your team are walking around with your faces on view. This is daft from two perspectives. Firstly, you stick out like a sore thumb that you are not one of them. Secondly, likely your faces are known to some of their cult by now, so someone ought to recognise you. How ridiculous can the writers and designers be? Could they not at least make you wear a hood for that mission? (Even if you normally have headwear toggled off). Come on, let's at least have a bit of genuine role playing. It's a far cry from the old BG2 days when you actually had to infiltrate a Drow city magically transformed to look like a drow, had gear that was drow and you had to be careful to behave like a drow. Now they just put you in an outfit that looks vaguely like you belong and that is it. The mission became even more absurd when someone challenges you but Rook's only response is "er, um", so Neve steps in and pulls the whole "I'm a Magister, do as I say", shtick. And the guard just goes "Okay" and that is it. I thought the security at the Conclave was bad. These cultists are so incompetent they deserve to be taken down.
I say this as someone whose task at a function held by my company which had an open bar was to ensure no one got in who hadn't been invited. I had sent out the invitations so I just memorized the guest list and then checked the name badges on the door. It was that simple. Oh and in case you were wondering, there were at least a hundred on that guest list. Okay, so I have something of a photographic memory but that is why they used me for the task. Tevinter has a floating security system with strobe lights that focuses on anyone they think shouldn't be there and yet these Vints can't come up with a simple magical system for detecting infiltrators who are walking around with their faces on show? Give me a break.

Something about the current iteration hasn't felt right from the moment I saw some of the early game play videos and it hasn't got any better the more I have seen. Of course it looks goofy as hell! But axes and hammers are both long weapons with a heavy head piece at the end that look at least somewhat believable when they slam the ground like Mjolnir on an angry day - a greatsword is just a long, balanced blade that lacks the weighty end to do this. Veilguard is probably not aimed at people who play RPGs for the combat and weapon variety anyway - it's all about the combos because everything else just does piddly needle prick damage. Embrace the prime and boom! Classes seem to play mostly the same way anyway, the difference being the look of the animations and the colours, patterns and status effects of the sparklies.

Pretty excited for tomorrow. No matter what happens I’ll get my entertainment. I want to take this time to thank CD Projekt Red, Todd Howard(multiple titles), Peter Molyneux, No Mans Sky, Andromeda, and the Star Wars franchise for preparing me for this moment. Couldn’t have made it without you. We live in unreal times, when the drama around a new high-profile video game promises to be more entertaining than the game itself. Too bad I don't like popcorn.

Too bad I don't like popcorn. What heresy is this?! But thanks for reminding me I have a popcorn machine. I keep forgetting. It's definitely going to be interesting! I honestly can't tell what the user reception will be and how to even tell because the game is going to get review bombed. I guess the best indicator of how much people actually enjoy the game is Steam player numbers and how quickly they fall off.

At this point this is just a slightly weird interest in what makes people gravitate so much towards this lame content... The content makers I get, they are completely cynical, but I don't get how come so many people watch these videos... But it's not big deal, just curiousity Dragon Age has been hot topic for a few weeks now. So obviously most content creators that specialize or are adjacent to video games will be talking about it. And while many are just riding the trendy wave atm, the fact that we are all getting those videos right in our faces means those videos are the ones being most sought after and getting the most engagement. Which is a good indicator of the general sentiment towards the game. There might be a big portion of diehard happy fans of Veilguard, but their engament pales in comparison to the people hating on the game right now. So those videos are literally selling like hot cakes right now. Simply put, they make money out of it. And at the end of the day, if it sells, it sells. And people ARE buying. I don't think so. In my experience most of the videos of this kind are more or less carbon copies of each other, repeating what others have already said ad infinitum. People are likely to notice that sooner rather than later. I get a lot of that stuff on my YT home page, but I just know I don't need to watch it after having watched three in-depth reviews. Which is already more than I usually watch but it's hard to tell in this atmosphere what's relevant and what isn't.

I'm going to hijack this Mass Effect tweet because it's comedy gold to me:
Michael Gamble @gamblemike Regarding tone questions: Mass Effect will maintain the mature tone of the original Trilogy. This is all I'm gonna say for now.
It's hilarious how BioWare is already doing damage control for their next game because of the pushback against Veilguard. They're already throwing their not released game under the bus in a desperate attempt to keep people interested in Mass Effect. So is this admitting Veilguard's tone was a grave mistake?
Veilguard is a gift that will keep on giving for years. Popcorn is popping!

If NME gets out in 2 years, I think details in regards of tone and artstyle are possibly set in stone, already, so this might not be damage control. After all, the hints of Veilguard’s current artstyle were already present in the teaser of 4 years ago. It is possible that Gamble has a different vision for ME then Veilguard’s. It is also possible this is damage control, but in that case I’d have waited for the actual release and reception.

It's just a matter of if the critic moderators will be able to keep up or not. The glazing reviews will be completely superficial, flowery nonsense that is careful not to be particularly specific about any one supposed positive aspect. And then you'll have the actual reviews, both positive and negative. It's just a matter of sifting through the debris. And it didn't have to be this way. One need look no further than Metaphor Refantazio. A game with heavy progressive themes but manages to stick its world of fantasy. It doesn't proselytize. It's simply a good game.

Giving people reassurance is telling imo, regardless of what the tone of ME5 was going to be. Even if ME5 was supposed to have a dark earnest tone very different from Veilguard already, they are admitting here that they're aware of how badly the art style and tone of Veilguard went down for some fans. And they seem concerned that it would put people off any future game, even if it's a different franchise.

I get the distinct impression that he was doing his own thing and was suddenly inundated by panicking fans regarding the next Mass Effect. Then he popped his head out to nip this in the bud. Trying to keep that horse inside of the barn, to convince EA that she still has some good races in her and to put the gun down.

I don’t think his tweets will mean much if the game doesn’t at least sell well enough to reach EA’s expectations. The receptions for player/fans is important, but if the game sells well enough with EA coud keep BioWare around, while also possibly ‘forcing’ BioWare to change course in tone/artstyle for the following DA games. If the game flops in terms of sales, I think there are very good chances EA shuts BioWare down.
We aren’t in their heads, so any interpretations are possible. I think it’s possible that Gamble respected and wanted to help the DA team, or even likes what they did while also believing ME should be different. I know about his role in MEA, but the lead producer isn’t in charge of the project…and the iteration of Andromeda they released was put together with little team as they needed to hastily change from what the Montreal team did. He could’ve also learnt from MEA and decided to go in a direction more similar to the OT.
It is a bit ironic that the one thing, I think, that most people will going to agree on for Veilguard, both positive and negative, and that it’ll be the most polished game they released, as it seeks they made an excellent PC port with, so far, no mention of bugs and glitches, with Bioware finally mastering Frostbite…but NME is developed, allegedly, on UE5, which from what I read might cause quite a few hiccups.

Gives me a lot of hope.

True, plus he doesn't use pronouns in his bio. Mike Gamble may have been the lead producer for Andromeda. But Mac Walters was the lead writer of that trash, and he's gone.

I was as under the impression that this system collapsed when everyone needed to push MEA out the door and then the same thing happened with Anthem. I just assumed they do one game after the other now with all hands on deck like Bethesda which is why the intervals between games has gotten so long. Hmmm.

I will wait for Angry Joe. If he gives 7/10, I might get it after a major price drop, depending on the mood. If he gives 5-6/10 No way he gives a 7...he and his crew have already looked at some of the footage with a fairly meh response...one of the guys outright said he wouldn't play it because the combat looked terrible. Probably wont see a review for at least 2 weeks after release though.

I'm already prepared mentally. I got a vague idea of what I'm getting. I know cringe will be there. Knowing me I will think about throwing my pc out of the window, start a review war against Bioware...remember I can't be arsed. Will find some lore that will make me go "all is forgiven", will cringe against, get angry again, if the ending is indeed really good. Mixed feeling aplenty. Will go on forum, rant and bitch about the game, lazy bad hamfisted writing, *look how they massacred my favorite franchise/insert gif* yadda yadda, will get excited (or not) about lore, and in a couple of weeks will be doing something more productive with my time.
I'm more concerned about my sleep pattern getting wonky if I can't stop playing, I stayed up too late reading reviews and I had an headache for 2 days.

I would assume internally there still are two teams. Separate writers, separate producers. Why else would Mike Gamble try to separate the two in his post?

Will it matter if they have HR standing over their shoulder telling them which boxes to check with the companions and to take out anything that might offend anyone in anyway?
