For some reason, Google AI is now giving me the Audience review for Veilguard. Not sure how reliable this might be since I think there is no need to actually play the game to post some kind of evaluation. As of this moment, it sits at 1.9 out of 5, with approximately 200 ratings posted. Logically speaking, the game is not out for most of the world yes? And you may not need to play it to rate it. We have bits of information, some scenes, and an ending. Yeah I’d take that with all the salt.

I keep refreshing this thread hoping to see someone say, "besides the Taash scenes and the weird companion arguing scenes, the writing is actually really really good"... I'm hopeless. I've only seen a few hours, mostly just the finale and some small bits here and there, but I had the same thought. The quality was better than the Taash scenes and the treating your companions like Kindergarteners scenes.
Maybe not amazing, but satisfying and far less cringe than I expected.
Thats a low bar, overall the writing is still very immature and cringe..much like Andromeda. A huge departure from the other DA games

"He who fights with monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster. When you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you" - Baldur's Gate 1 tagline, originally by Friedrich Nietzsche.
Ironically, a quote cited in the intro of the original Baldur's Gate

Here's a non spoiler first impression from a mega fan on Reddit who said the beginning feels bad but it gets better and the sidequests are actually a lot better than in DAI and feel organic. The HR in the room situation is there but not as much as one might think after watching the SkillUp review. Full text only spoilered for length: "My thoughts after a long session, copy arrived early.
I thought it might be useful for some of those on the fence to have a complete nobody's opinion rather than somebody who is looking for content interaction. Granted, I'm a mega fan, but that means I am coming at the game from as close a standpoint to all of the people on this sub as possible. I understand these games intimately.
So, my main takeaway from this session is that the first few hours of the game, and the presentation of some of the scenes and dialogue... well, it's frankly jarring. Having replayed the series recently to get back into the lore I think I tricked my brain a little bit, but make no mistake, the game may feel a little stilted at first if you've just played Inquisition. This is not to say it feels *bad*, it's just so standalone in the way it handles almost everything that it is definitely a shock to the system.
Then I allowed myself to relax, I got through the oddly presented opening and into the real meat of the game, and the feeling I get when I play Inquisition for the 20th time is back, and I don't mean the slog of the shards or the thousand fade rifts. I mean the sense of the worldbuilding, the lore, the characters having depth and nuance.
In terms of the 'HR in the room' dialogue comments, I can say I understand *why* these comments might be made by somebody who blasted through the game, because there have been a couple of moments where I sighed and thought 'yeah, that'll do it'. That said, there are many of the same moments in every single Dragon Age game, but unfortunately the online discourse had me sensitive to it. When I acknowledged this and really reminded myself to just have fun, it became a non-issue immediately.
Otherwise I think the companions are better than I expected. There was one in particular I expected to strongly dislike, but now I'm leaning towards a romance. Also, Rook is not forced to be a 'goody two shoes' like some people have been suggesting. My Rook is showing signs of being Renegade Shepard with horns. It's very satisfying.
Above all else, the main thing I can recommend is to take it slow. The side content in this game is the polar opposite of Inquisition. It does not feel like a time sink. It feels like an essential part of the story, and I can definitely see that as I progress, things in the story will be different depending on whether I do all of the side content or not.
I hope this counts as no spoilers, and I hope it's helpful to you all! If people want, I'll update this again tomorrow when I've played more.
Edit: I've replied to as many comments as I can. I'll return here when I've finished the game for those of you who are waiting for a sale or more info before you buy." Thread link: www.reddit.com/r/dragonage/s/CyseNjvxMn

Regarding Ghil and 'em They really do have a power rangers'esque scene near the beginning missions of the game where they discuss their evil plans. And how they're shaping up. It's so stereotypical Saturday morning cartoon villain that it hurts. Back when it was still called dredd wolf i was still holding out faint hopes for nuance/rationality in portrayal(compared to trespasser). But since then no i've been expecting full on moustache twirling clown car. Hopefully at one point they say 'we would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids'

Even positive reviews have confirmed that its not the case. Being able to do some rare bad things (that pale compared to what we were able to do in previous games) means shit if Rook is heroic for the other 99% of the game. You can't trust reviews from that sub. They ban criticism

I'm lurking in Cohh Carnage's stream right now, he's currently playing Factorio but will start DAV in about 45 minutes, I think. I recently found him on Twitch and think he's a pretty balanced dude when giving his impressions on games he's playing, am curious how it'll go. (He's also apparently a save scummer like me so at least there one thing I agree with him on )

I think I've seen many people who seem to settle for Andromeda level writing, so I'm glad if this news satisfy them but I don't think it will satisfy me if that's the level we can expect.
I do want to mention that I'm very critical of writing and dialogue and plot cohesion and things like that so it's very possible people that are more tolerant of that can get great deal of enjoyment from the Veilguard

If the game kept the feel of this finale gauntlet here throughout all the campaign would have been fine. I think every DA fan would have enjoyed it much more. At least it's good to know there will be something to look for, still a far cry from what I expected during these 10 years. At least Solas will get what's coming to him, I'll get my closure.

I'll return here when I've finished the game for those of you who are waiting for a sale or more info before you buy." Thread link: www.reddit.com/r/dragonage/s/CyseNjvxMn"In terms of the 'HR in the room' dialogue comments, I can say I understand *why* these comments might be made by somebody who blasted through the game, because there have been a couple of moments where I sighed and thought 'yeah, that'll do it'. That said, there are many of the same moments in every single Dragon Age game, but unfortunately the online discourse had me sensitive to it. When I acknowledged this and really reminded myself to just have fun, it became a non-issue immediately."
Stuff like this is the reason I don't frequent that sub much. When you need to discredit someone, especially based on an assumption, to rationalize and justify objectively bad wring is a red flag. I can't take anything from this.

I didn't watch it yet, but if it's really that good and the only part that is that good I can hardly see a reason to play the game. I'll just watch that segment on YouTube and be done with it

I mean I'm glad Varric as a character won't get dragged through anything else. Also his writer got fired.
But so many bad cliché, Varric deserved better than to end up sacrifice as a plot point for Solas character arc.
Varric HATED anders. HATED after what happened at Kirkwall. Solas caused the conclave, Varric only knew him a year...no way he would have been let me save my friend. Just to die to tell you "btw you can't redeem Solas Rook, I tried."

Thread link: www.reddit.com/r/dragonage/s/CyseNjvxMnRead it. Sounds like some major cope. Dude ls lying that you can be a ruthless anti hero. Even positive reviews have confirmed that its not the case. Being able to do some rare bad things (that pale compared to what we were able to do in previous games) means shit if Rook is heroic for the other 99% of the game. You can't trust reviews from that sub. They ban criticism I know this sub is a toxic positivity bubble that deletes all criticism. I was surprised to find even such mild criticism, lol. It's damning when even the biggest copium huffers comment on how bad the first hours are and how much getting used to the combat system is. I agree with somebody in the comments however that ME3 had issues too with pacing. The prologue was dogshit tbh. I remember distinctly how bad the opening felt. I remember thinking, has BioWare lost it? It was so rushed, I was really worried the game was going to be shit. It wasn't until meeting Liara that it felt like good old BioWare again and I breathed a sigh of relief. I've always had the unpopular opinion that the prologue was worse than the endings. I hadn't played Arrival at the times so I had even less context why Shep was locked up. It was done so poorly. It was nothing like what I had hoped for. Didn't expect the reapers to arrive within 5 minutes. Godawful pacing. I also didn't like the art style change come to think of it. And I remember the ridicule for the awful looking sprites running around below. Cheap ass! And the new running animations? Ugh. Some people will say ME3 was already the beginning of the end but I have always loved the game despite some major flaws. And the combat was amazing. Some of the squad mate moments made me tear up, in that department it was an amazing journey. But I won't talk myself into believing it will be a similar situation. ME3 had no writing as bad as the stuff I saw in the SkillUp review. There is no excuse for it. I can overlook pacing problems. Sure. I can tolerate another bland milk toast protagonist. But I will not call this preachy kindergarten circus acceptable in any form. So unless these dialogue examples are EXTREME outliers, this won't be a bad first impression to love journey again for me like ME3.

From the reddit review: "Renegade Shepard with horns". I mean. Where to start? I know they're a big Dragon Age fan, but are they a big Mass Effect fan? Renegade Shepard without horns regularly intimidates, beats, extorts, and threatens civilians. Renegade Shepard tends to be pro-human to a Cerberus degree and everything that implies. Renegade Shepard is regularly dismissive, cruel and nasty to his companions when given the chance.
Renegade Shepard with horns? He commits genocide twice before lunch. Kills his companion's child, hooks a civilian up to be tortured for a chance at intel of a defeated enemy, doesn't even deign to try to warn the Batarians of their relay destruction, and he shoots and kills the man or woman who was with him from day one. Not to mention he lies to a long time companion's face and even tries to bring up a loyalty to mission to get him to stand down. This is of course after he's been found out to have sabotaged a cure that could save the Krogan. He drives a companion to suicide because he just didn't care enough to put in the work to save them. He effectively kills the council to install his own people when given the opportunity.
Those are some mighty big shoes to fill, Rook.

I keep refreshing this thread hoping to see someone say, "besides the Taash scenes and the weird companion arguing scenes, the writing is actually really really good"... I'm hopeless. It's a 40-80 hour game, a full-blown analysis from a non-media or non-creator could take a little while. The 'What did you do today' thread may eventually grant insight. bsn.boards.net/thread/20393/today-dragon-age-veilguard-spoilers

So unless these dialogue examples are EXTREME outliers, this won't be a bad first impression to love journey again for me like ME3. I agree that ME3's prologue was messy and rushed. But like you said the overall game was still great and mature & not juvenile and preachy. The Genophage and Rannoch arcs were especially well written. I wouldn't expect anything on that level in Veilguard. If you have played Andromeda..thats exactly what Veilguard is like. Same immature writing and bad YA novel characters
