you know there was a point the soundtrack sounded like something from Mass Effect? this weird techno. I was completely shocked It definitely feels like Mass Effect: The Veilguard. Especially with those magic crystals every where that follow you around and shoot beams of light infinitely, floaty teleporting glowing skeletons, husks, even technobabble, the primer/detonate system, and abilities having a long global cooldown.

I thought of commenting about the soundtrack for a moment, but I can't recall anything about it. It is just forgettable, I suppose. Yeah even the music is completely generic. It has no charm, same as everything else in this game. Come to think of it, a game for children is even too generous a notion and insulting to any child older than five. I've played games for children with much better writing. The writing is honestly brain dead. No normal adult talks like that unless talking to a toddler. I'm glad that Rook feels like the most normal mature person of the group.

I don't think the dialogue is that bad, the problem is that they don't talk about anything really meaningful, all the dialogue is just shallow and boring and is in service of a bare bone plot with no world building whatsoever. Some examples from act one with some minor spoilers from this act: What the hell the Qunari are doing in Treviso? Who cares and who knows. Why are the venatory even a thing in this game? Who cares who knows. What's going on between the crows? Who knows who cares

Besides the horrible writing, another thing that's giving me pause is Rook catching all the aggro. That sounds extremely annoying, and not like something you can change in the options menu.

So is there anything in the game that tells us about the origins of humans?

I'll tell you why is that. It's because the "companions" in this game are not much more than special weapons on a technical sense. They can do damage but they have no health bar

I think I'm very bad at this game. My friend's PC is not that good and the game didn't run so well so maybe I can blame it on that instead of my own incompetence but I kinda felt like I spend tons of time healing myself during combat.

Since I don't really know how to say this without spoilers I'll keep this as vague as possible. I've met a character, one that is only mentioned in codex entries and obscure lore.
It was incredibly underwhelming, it was met with a big ass shrug, and they were also... cartoony evil. This game really let no lore untouched, and what it touches it destroys. A story that could have had some nuance is turned again into "I'm evil, very very evil and I'm doing evil things."

I've played it for only 8,5 hours so far and it feels like a tiresome slog. Less engaging than Anthem or Andromeda. The combat is seriously repetitive. It is not bad, it is passable, but seriously repetitive. Every boss battle is virtually the same. And the combat is for me, honestly speaking, the best part of it. Apart from the graphics, of course. Everything else is just meh. Voice acting is very uninspiring. I thought of commenting about the soundtrack for a moment, but I can't recall anything about it. It is just forgettable, I suppose. But then again, I am only 8,5 hours in. Maybe this turns out to be Bioware's return to its former glory after a few more hours in, who knows. Imo combat being the only check mark is pretty damning in an rpg. Like an Oreo without filling, I guess somewhat edible but not why you bought the packet.

A supposed BioWare game where I’ve read more than once now that people are looking forward to the combat more than anything is indescribably brutal. It’s as you say. Like picking up a Madden game for the story and rushing through the football. Another title where if you take the first two words off, you might have a good time. Depressing. Metacritic user scores are a lot lower than I thought they’d be too.

Go and look at Cohn’s face as he says “the game is fine”, after only playing it for 8 hours. The same amount of time most previewers had to come away with positive impressions of the game. Tells you everything you need to know about this title. The man looks as if he just got done working in a particularly difficult public school where the kids are the worst behaved in the nation.

And here we go. User scores on Metacritic are open. Yes yes, as expected its mostly 10s and 0s and pretty much no middle ground. And before someone points out the obvious that most critics are the haters vs the lovers and not organic at all bla bla bla, doesnt really matter though does it? At the end of the day, even if its a battle between both extremes, the fact remains. Its considered a 2/10. 1.9/10 on PC, and 2.5/10 on PS5 (more than a 1000 reviews on PS alone). I expect that on Steam the game will reach 80k+ tomorrow, maybe even 90k if it goes well. And its quite sad to see people praising it as best EA Steam release EVER!! I mean... BG3 (you know the number 3 of a previous Bioware saga) which came out 15months ago, and its steady at only 10k less concurrent players than Veilguard on launch. That. Is. Not. Good! We might not know console numbers, but lets have a bit of intelectual honesty and not call this sad numbers a TRIUMPH please... www.metacritic.com/game/dragon-age-the-veilguard/user-reviews/?platform=playstation-5

Tells you everything you need to know about this title. The man looks as if he just got done working in a particularly difficult public school where the kids are the worst behaved in the nation. His criticisms are the same as everybody's criticisms so far - "the quality of the writing is incredibly unnatural, it's very forced, and it's very basic. And where in previous games I would look forward to characters talking to each other or telling me bits about the world, I kind of dread when it happens in this game because it feels so homogenized, basic, and frankly like I'm being talked to like a child". Bioware used to be known for its writing, so much so that the writing could trump horrible gameplay like in ME1 and make the game a success. It's just disappointing

It infuriates me that many people, and not just from this thread, started sounding the alarm in regards to the writing months ago. And we were told 'it's just a letter', ' it's just the background', 'you're nitpicking', 'she's not quirky'. And now look, the most agreed upon aspect in regards to this game is the damned writing. Maybe it wouldn't have changed anything, but I do think we would have been better prepared to endure this mess if more people had looked at this title as it really was and not what they wanted it to be.

Even now it persists. Not to mention I don't think it ever made it to the top ten and it never passed Factorio. I don't know about you, but it seems like a triumphant return to form to me.

Combat is so boring. I ended up turning the difficulty all the way down just so I could mow through it quicker. It's always just some round arena or open area w/o many features to it and enemies running directly at you or dropping some AOE you gotta dodge out of.
The voice acting is so uninspired. Neve started out doing some weird voice that sounded like she was trying to imitate a noir movie detective but seems to have just gone for a huskier affect halfway through act 1. Varric, Harding, Lucanus are decent but don't have very much that's interesting to say. Bellara is... fine, but most of her writing seems to be about her fan girling out over Neve.
Every map is just a series of hallways stacked on top of each other that you can't fully access until you have the right companion ability or complete some side quest. Unfortunately the game doesn't tell you that so you might waste some time checking every corner of the hall for some broken wall or roof you can climb on before you realize it's some locked door that will only open after you finish a quest. There are some chests that have a unique loot item, but the rest are mostly just generic trash that will feed into their weird armor gacha system. Also speaking of generic looking systems, hope you enjoy waiting for a level up for some lame +5/+10 % skill increment. Granted RPG systems have never been BioWare's strength, but this wish.com assassin's creed tree they cooked up is rough to look through. Not sure what the point of giving the mage so many spells was if you're just looking at weaken or overwhelm as your verbs.
Really embarrassing shit. I'm really surprised at some of the 9/10 reviews I've seen. I guess a high level of polish goes a long way, but this game is basically the same tier as something like Rise of the Argonauts or one of those Spiders RPGs in terms of writing and gameplay.

Neve's voice acting is stiff, one note and it reminds me of the worst examples you can find in Skyrim. I don't know if it's the directing or if it's just the VA, but it's bad. Really distracting that she's always the same.

Really distracting that she's always the same. A lot of people have shared the same sentiment and again it was ignored. It's the first thing that popped out when they showed us the gameplay footage after their fortnite trailer. I was really immersed in the story with Varric and Rook. Then they get to Neve and it falls off a cliff. I'm not sure it's the VA, because Neve isn't the only one who sounds strange. Why does Bellara perpetually sound as if she's talking to a young child? It seems to be more the direction.

Really distracting that she's always the same. Cyberpunk's voice acting ruined a lot of games for me. It was so good it just made a bunch of other games sound really stale so I find it hard to tell how bad some voice acting is now. Neve's voice actor sounds pretty good, it might be the direction. Direction can absolutely just ruin performances

That's actually much lower than I was anticipating. It's gone up some since you posted: 2.2 PC, 3.3 and 4.2 respectively on PS and XB. The lower scores on PC make sense since PC gamers tend to be older than console players. On Steam it's mostly positive on reviews and number 2 seller globally. The disconnect between Steam and Metacritic is probably due to review bombers being ahead of the up-voting crowd at the moment...I expect that to change in the coming week. I give it a 6 thru the first 4 hours. I may end up knocking off a whole point for the messaging at the end if it's really bad.

Especially with those magic crystals every where that follow you around and shoot beams of light infinitely, floaty teleporting glowing skeletons, husks, and even technobabble. It wouldn't be crazy for Bio to go that route. It's not like ME wasn't a success, and I suppose their tracking data shows that most DA fans played ME too.
