I just have to say this because I keep seeing D'Meta's Crossing brought up as proof that DAV is just as dark or darker than previous DA games, and it makes my mind go *buffering*.
D'Meta's Crossing is the epitome of "we have Crestwood at home"...

I feel like the biggest thing they could've down to help was give us a Origin style prologue with our faction doing the quest we had to leave our faction for and make Varric be the Duncan. That quest should've also been like our own personal quest we can progress throughout the game with it's own boss tied to it. Having Arl Howe or Bhelen tied to certain Origins made playing those protagonist feel like they had and still have their own personal conflicts in the world. Rook as a Crow having a unfinished contract that we finally complete Act 3 would feel more fulfilling then what we got. I agree that this would have made a big difference to the story and Rook would have seemed more grounded in the setting. It would also make sense of Varric saying he had seen them work. Also, they could already have a connection to the companion from the relevant faction. It need not have been close but it would mean they weren't a total stranger to the player when we picked them up later on. Instead what could have been a fascinating introduction to both Rook and their faction was confined to just a few lines of codex. All he DAO origin stories really immersed you in your background but I agree that for a human noble or a dwarf from Orzammar (whether noble or casteless), encountering Howe and Bhelen again gave it a real significance. Also, don't forget as a dwarf noble running into Gorim plying his trade in Denerim, having been exiled to the surface or the dwarf casteless finding their sister had gone up in the world as Bhelen's mistress. Meanwhile, as an elf and particularly a city elf, what Loghain did in the alienage was unforgivable so that was personal. Having the Dalish shopkeeper remember your father as a Dalish Warden was just an added bit of immersion. Meanwhile, if you came from the Circle, running into Jowan again gave you a variety of options how you wanted to play it but it did give added meaning to that part of the story. It is really odd considering they did seem to want to reboot the franchise that they didn't do so with origin stories for Rook that would have been appreciated by old and new players.

Apparently playing a warden is the most immersive is what I keep hearing. My Lord Of Fortune is just some treasure hunter that got a death mark on his head for stealing from the wrong people like Isabela in DA2 and doesn't really have a connection to anything. Sure, Rook knows Isabela. There is of course faction specific stuff for all the Rivain bits, dialogue with Taash and so on. But outside of being recognized as a part of the faction the background might as well not exist except for a minor remark here and there. But I kind of expected this going in and still chose that faction because it's just the vibe my Rook gave me. I like him being Rivaini.
I too think origin stories would have helped this soft reboot greatly. It makes so much sense here, especially considering the game spends 90% of its storytelling in act 1 lore dumping for new players. I suspect this is the main reason why everything is kind of boring. I know all this already! I imagine for new players this is all fascinating and exciting. There is so far precious little new interesting stuff for old fans. Confirmation of things hinted at before at the most.
Couldn't BioWare wait for a reboot AFTER the literal direct sequel to DAI??? Fuck new players, have them play the older games to get up to speed. That's extra sales too. If they can't be bothered then it's on them they don't understand what's going on. I would never play a direct sequel without checking out the previous game(s) first. I'll never understand people who jump into a franchise several games down the road unless they are completely contained stories like Assassin's Creed.
This might be a controversial stance but imo devs should NOT be obligated to cater to new people in this extreme fashion. Nor should a game be accessible to everyone on the planet. I actually think that's a terrible approach and ruining AAA gaming. Games have genres. They cater to specific players who play a certain type of game. A good game is a game that is made for a specific target audience and tries to excel in that niche.
I'll never play a souls-like, don't care if Elden Ring is an RPG and amazing at what it does. I'll never play it. Don't try and make this an appealing game to me by making it less unforgiving. That would take away why fans play these games, for the challenge. And yet BioWare did just that: let's ditch previous choices because it's too complicated all of a sudden and, really, new players don't know these NPCs anyway and that's all that matters to us now.
I really resent BioWare a little for making baby's first Dragon Age, dumbing down the lore to make it more accessible. This game should have been a love letter to the fanbase and in my eyes it's anything but. It's a handholding exercise in bringing new kids to the franchise, leaving *me* kind of bored.
I guess I really have to trust the final 5h are worth it for the fans...

Look at this: WTF?! What is this moral nonsense? We've been plundering Elven Ruins forever and no one gives a shit, not even our party Dalish Elves. The one time it did matter was in Inquisition and it only mattered if you wanted to gain the support of a Dalish clan. Pirates, Thieves and Tomb Raiders can't amoral anymore, they have to be goody 2 shoes that always respect the people/culture they are not-stealing from according to Nu-BioWare

Apparently playing a warden is the most immersive is what I keep hearing. To what extent, though? I'm playing Lords of Fortune which has 0 immersion so far. So having more immersion than that isn't saying much. However, I can obviously see the logic in Warden being more immersive. I guess I'm curious in how much dialogue it changes in a meaningful way.

You get plenty of auto dialogue and also normal dialogue. Even toward the end you can scream the warden motto " in war, victory", that beats the "for freedom" or whatever you can get. But there's also opportunity missed with a warden.

What's even more sad about my LoF run is it's looking like their isn't any Rivani decor. I already got over the fact we don't go to any of the actual cities in Rivani and actually get a grasp of their culture outside of LoF. Rivani was a place in Thedas I was very much interested in exploring seeing how diverse they really were having Qun settlements, Dalish settlements. Rivani Seers and a more matriarchal society that while still had Chantry presence but had their own traditional ways and approach to spirituality and magic. Rivani was almost like the Hammerfall in Elder Scrolls of Thedas when it came to Humans. That's why the touting of diversity in this game hits in a weird way when the natural diversity and culture that was already in the Dragon Age lore gets pushed aside for our out of game aspects.
LoF Rook in some ways I will admit does feel good in certain aspects roleplay wise given the type of character Rook is. And Isabela putting Varric on to Rook makes a good argument for a LoF Rook. But the experience doesn't feel as connected as the other factions it seems. A LoF Rook does give that aspect of a Rook that will do whatever to get the job done but outside of that is alot left to be desired. No cool pirate hat or pirate trench coat either.
The fact that Tevinter has their own Grand Proving because of their relationship with dwarves which I haven't seen on display in this game, but we literally have a Roman Colosseum in the universe of this game and we were finally in range of it but because the LoF had no creativity put into it and we can't have a convo with Isabela forreal they put the quest that would make the most sense in Tevinter with the LoF.

The fact the same people who say D'Mrta's Crossing is dark are the same people praising the ending segments makes me very pessimistic about this segment's ability to really impress me I've been mainly avoiding spoilers. However, do we go back to D'meta's crossing or something, and that's what people are talking about? One of my issues with the narrative and the supposed "darkness", is that everything so far is after the fact. You arrive somewhere and its blighted or there's dead bodies everywhere. And sometimes, they even forget to add blood stains to those dead bodies. Except for the intro, the game being "dark" is like visiting a haunted house without any jump scares.

So then, nobody wants to play? Pity. Still, since I stopped playing this game, I amused myself writing a different intro scene. It's mostly based on my own choices in Inquisition but it does retain some elements from the current game. Disclaimer: I am not a writer, so you should forgive the clumsy style. But then again, fan-fiction for fan-fiction, I prefer my own. ----- Kirkwall, midsummer 9:48 Dragon
Blue smoke is wafting through the small stone room. Several humans and dwarves are sitting at a long table, hunched over while speaking in low voices. They all look weary, stretching and yawning while a pitcher of ale is being passed around. They are not supposed to gather in any sort of numbers and they mostly haven't; only a handful of times since the beginning of the hunt, six years before. But when they must, this is where they meet: in Darktown, Kirkwall's underbelly.
[Perhaps Valdasine Thaig would be better? Close to Kirkwall but dangerous to access...?]
Every once in a while, one of them looks towards the smaller table at the end of the room. There sits Harding, the First Hunter, the Viscount and what appears to be a woman, cloaked in black fabrics, her face hidden by a low cowl.
As the junior among the company, Hunter is busy refilling everyone's cup when Harding, glancing furtively at the impassive figure across the table, assumes a cheerful tone when she addresses Varric.
"I keep meaning to ask, what kind of excuses do you give your people?"
Varric grunts and shakes his head.
"Some time ago I sort of hinted I had a mistress, and every once in a while I take off for a day or three to keep up the charade."
The ghost of a smile comes on Hunter's lips but he remains quiet as Harding lets out a chuckle.
"Well I hope that didn't lend you into any trouble..."
Varric makes a face, as if tasting something sour. Then abruptly he turns towards the cloaked woman.
"Why are we here!?"
The woman ignores the question and focuses on Harding.
"Did you visit all the locations I indicated in my last message?" Her voice is strangely inflectionless. Harding nods, turning grim once more.
"Blight, but different somehow. More..." She shrugs. "...alive but...less aggressive? There were some dakspawns every time, but never in large numbers and they always retreated when we engaged them..."
The figure is still for a long time, as if digesting every potential implications. And then.
"Recall everyone."
Hunter puts down his cup and frowns, looking at both Harding and Varric in turn before staring at the woman.
"The last elves we cornered said our wolf is hiding somewhere in Arlathan Forest..." A delicate hand emerges and stops him. The toneless voice resumes.
"Solas is in the Fade, it is the only place where he can hide and use his eluvians. Arlathan is merely the base of operation for his people."
The woman lowers her hood. She looks to be in her fifties, with threads of silver glittering through a helm of dull flame. Her dark blue eyes appear unfocused as her gaze rests on the Viscount.
"A few weeks ago Morrigan came to pay a visit. She urged us to investigate those locations I mentioned. She was visibly agitated and kept repeating "the Song has changed".
[Morrigan drank from the Well and since absorbing Mythal's essence (if that's what Flemmeth was doing at the end of Inquisition), she can also hear the music of the Blight]
"Another Blight..." Varric sounds incredulous. And then he slams a meaty hand on the table. "Are we not deep enough in shit already!?" He exclaims, loud enough for everyone in the room to look up. He goes on, oblivious. "Orlais locked in civil war since the Empress died [not at the ball but years later, without a successor - can be swapped for Gaspard], the magisters and the Archon squabbling while the Qunari advance through Rivain and Antiva and now this!?" He takes a deep breath. "And Chukles..." spitting the name "...always 3 steps ahead, stirring up more shit for us to swallow..." His shoulders slump as he slowly passes a hand over his eyes.
"I'm too old for this Leliana! I wish Hawke was here." [Hawke was left in the Fade - the only choice IMO since a warden was needed to lead the remnants of the Wardens afterwards] Harding is distressed to hear her old comrade sounding so defeated.
The Nightingale looks unconcerned as she continues.
"That is why you were summoned and why I came here myself. Solas is no longer our sole priority. The Inquisitor and I agree on this." [The Inquisition was disbanded - its remnants purged - what was left went underground] "Whatever he did or tried to do had unintended consequences."
"And isn't that fucking typical!" The bitterness in Varric's voice is palpable.
Hunter then asks.
"So what do you want us to do now?"
Leliana finally acknowledges his presence, assessing him with a penetrating look before she responds.
"We will use the orb you recovered last year to open a rift into the Fade. You will find Hawke, if he still lives, and bring him back."
"What!?!" Varric jumps out of his chair, furious. "Are you saying we could have rescued him all this time!?" He roars.
"Time is measured differently in the Fade Varric." Leliana lectures on. "For all we know, Hawke might still be fighting that demon. We could not attempt this without the orb and we have not used it so far to avoid alerting Solas. It was to be kept a secret until the last moment. But this new Blight changes everything."
She pauses for a moment, eyes unblinking.
"Morrigan will join you as well since she is one of the few who can defeat the Nightmare." She turns to Harding. "In the meantime, all the cells will be redeployed. You will go to Weisshaupt yourself. I suspect this will be a prime target for whatever Solas let loose; the First Warden must be made to ready his troops. Reports from Antiva also indicate the Crows are on their last leg, that cell will fall back to Starkhaven and wait further instructions."
Harding frowns and asks.
"The Qunari have been on the continent for three years now, yet they haven't gone further than Antiva... and they haven't moved against the Free marches either."
Hunter couldn't be sure but could have sworn he saw something like a spark a amusement flashing in the Nightingale's cold eyes before it vanished.
"I used to be acquainted with the current Arishok; he is nothing if not methodical." She answered. "He will not move further until his rearguard and supply lines with Par-Vollen are completely secured. That is why he conquered Llomerryn and took the time to eliminate the Felicisima Armada first. That is why the Antaam is now hunting the Crows relentlessly. That is also why they have not breached Arlathan forest or moved further south. But when he is ready, he will be moving fast. Therefore we must know about Hawke's fate before then." She takes a moment to sip at the water in front of her. "Your job Hunter is now to assemble a team. You know all the northern cell leaders gathered here; choose the three best among them and make your way to Cumberland. Morrigan will be waiting for you there."
Leliana signals her bodyguards and stands up, pulling her cowl back into place. Varric looks up and says.
"I should be going too!"
"No Varric, the Veil is thin in Kirkwall; you might find yourself on the front line sooner than you think. Besides, you have a city to care for. You must prepare it for what is coming. And we are counting on you to hold the fort."
He nods reluctantly and then she is gone.

There’s a distinction between having a few dark trappings and actually being dark fantasy.
Yes, a lot of people die in Veilguard. Yes, there are a lot of nasty tentacles and veiny darkspawn running around. Yes, the fate of Thedas is at stake.
But you, the player, are not forced to make any choices that would put you in a morally compromised position. That whole thing with the mayor of D’Meta’s Crossing? That’s just a choice between “justice” (leave him to his fate) and “compassion” (free him from the tentacles). And the choice to save either Minrathous or Treviso isn’t a moral dilemma, but rather a question of resource management.
There’s no choice to, say, turn the griffons into monsters to defeat El’gar’nan or to turn a blind eye to a slave ship in order to get the resources to save a town. You’re always a hero - it’s just a choice between “stern hero” and “loving hero.”
Add to that the fact that all the edges have been sanded off of the groups you can ally with - the Crows are now “protectors of Antiva” instead of a ruthless assassin’s guild - and there’s virtually no real conflict between party members, who are all basically morally upstanding people.
It’s a pale shadow of even DAI, where the Inquisitor could at least make some fairly harsh judgements that pissed off people and your party included a few morally questionable people.

Yeah, that's part of it. Everyone is always already dead. I'm still in act 1 but does anybody get killed on screen who isn't a bad guy? I'm curious, I already cannot recall if it happened.
There is SOME gore though in the environmental storytelling. I did a sidequest last night where I came upon two very gruesome scenes: The second image is BG3 level carnage, I liked that. BUT you do not encounter a single living person there. It's a heartbreaking story but since all involved are not there it didn't really shock me or anything. It didn't make me emotional. Now compare that to the absolute horror of finding Hawke's mother in DA2! That was one of the most fucked up things Bioware ever did. DA2 was full of very uncomfortable narrative elements like the whole thing with the abducted children. Inmpossible to do in 2024, I guess.
I am enjoying the visuals of the environments a lot now. I do like how the blight looks. Ignoring how we can just now walk in it and it doesn't matter. But it all does look disgusting. There are places with a very oppressive mood. That all is FINE. But rarely do we experience anything horryfing happening to anybody. At least so far.
Being told that thousands have already died is not emotional. Maybe somewhat horrifying on an abstract level. But at least in my case, when I don't see something done to a person on screen it just doesn't really land. It doesn't REALLY sell the horror. The venatory hanging people also happened off screen. In Witcher 3 you witness a witch burning the first time you enter Novigrad and it was absolutely horrifying because you cannot stop it. You have to watch that person die, watch them scream. In DAV it's all such a lifeless affair. Just a backdrop you can very easily not pay too much attention to.

What even are those dark moments? Maybe I'm jaded, but even in DA2 the intro with the chained statues was what I would say, dark. And they followed up with what happened in that city. In DAV it's just, oh we had a mission where blight happened, whatever, go get a coffee cup with a companion.

My brother in law, also a big fan of the franchise, wasnt aware of what was done to Dragon Age, so he bought Veilguard before I had a chance to warn him not to. He played 4h and said he was done. His gaming time is very limited, and he certainly wont waste it on something this bad. I used his account to try the game... I played 3H and I just cant... I thought that maybe if i just shut down my brain and take it as a totally unrelated game that I would at least be able to get through it. But its just too painful. Having Varric and Harding in my face and feel like they are just someone else using their skins as some kind of disturbing cosplay, its just wrong. Cant do it. Maybe once im done with the grieving I might be able to give it another try, but right now its just too painful to watch this washed out discount walking simulator disguised as an RPG without the gut feeling that it just feels so very wrong. (What's up with the jumping animation btw? Rook looks like a toddler who just watched someone jump for the first time and its trying to copy it)
In other news, have you guys seen the reported rumours of sales not even reaching 500k copies? Of Steam refunds reaching an all time high on the day Veilguard released? Hard to believe right? But I'm pretty sure that if Veilguard had reached 1M copies sold they would be sounding the trumpets right away. Yet its been over a week since release and not a peep on sales.
Well.. I guess the Dreadwolf did take them..

Just as usual it's not getting applauded like the new best thing. But the game is polished enough, and I doubt EA care about weak writing and weak rp.

With the ammount of backlash they had, im sure Bioware would jump on the opportunity to make a flex with x amount of copies sold. The fact that they didnt is very telling. DAI for all its flaws, is a masterpiece in comparison to this Dragon Age fanfiction we got last week. DAI was divisive in terms of action/openworld-ish aspects, but in everything else I think it was very true to the franchise. And because it was well written and had good companions, it obviously sold well. People like and buy products with substance. But Veilguard... well, a polished turd is still a turd

Here's a question. I saw an article or two that said Gaider left behind an overarching plan for DA and that according to him, they were still following it. Does anyone believe that? Or do you think that while the overarching arc in Dave was a twisted, malformed take on part of that plan?

I thought Inquisition needed the origin stories too tbh. Someone at BW seems to like the being a leader thing (though it was mostly egregious in SWTOR when 'you are alliance commander now' and I'm like 'but I'm a smuggler???'). I would have liked more of the setup of Rook's character rather than just being told things, but again it just all feels rushed.
I think that they didn't know what they wanted for Veilguard, whether to appeal to new fans or old fans, and kind of ended up alienating both. I'll be upfront and say I didn't read any of the novels and the like and was sitting there going "I don't know who these people are and I feel like I should", but I did re-play Inquisition in the lead-up and was left with a feeling of "well, none of that mattered, did it?".

OK, so I have just talked to Morrigan at the Crossroads and finished the entire Regrets Of The Dread Wolf stuff before I've even completed act 1 and it feels like this is not what I was supposed to do just yet, lol.
No spoilers, just wanted to say that I actually liked everything about it. And even though Morrigan isn't as complex as before perhaps because without a world state important she can't be, I thought at least she sounded like herself and Claudia Black is a delight as usual. That was the best part of the game to me so far. Everything about Solas, how my Rook was able to be super pissed off with him and call him names and have Morrigan react to that in an interesting way. That was GOOD writing. Rook can totally call Solas all the things us Solas haters have been accusing him of, I'm almost shocked, lol.
So perhaps the game isn't entirely a lost cause. I feel like I'm playing two different games in one. The elven backstory that is well presented and then the Lighthouse Disney level fluff that is completely disconnected from everything and mostly cringe.

Or do you think that while the overarching arc in Dave was a twisted, malformed take on part of that plan? Solas, Mythal and the Evanuris ware planned from the get go. This game answers the questions raised in previous games, so it does have an ending to the overarching plot but the way the story is propelled forward is not what was envisioned in the beginning. I'm still in Act 2 but from what I've heard Veilguard pretty much answers all the theories from the past 10 years but doesn't offer anything new to speculate about, which is a shame, I enjoy reading DA theories a lot. Unless that's the plan and a new DA game, if it ever happens, will be a blank state with the lore changed to fit whatever devs want to write about.
