Oh my . . . I watched the beginning of a Meeting Bellara video. I only watched the first couple minutes to avoid major spoilers . . . but its terrible. Its like a kids Saturday morning cartoon . . . like watching Dora the Explorer. The voice acting for Bellara, Rook, and even Neve/Harding is bad (I looked at two different versions). The dialogue insipid. And the facial animations and bad lip-sync make them all look like puppets. I have no words . . . view at your own risk! My skepticism meter just went to 11 Introduction only with Neve Full mission with Harding There aren't any major spoilers in the first few minutes (other than meeting Bellara). The only time Bioware's managed to write a neurodivergent-coded character slightly well has been with Merrill. Bellara reads like a slightly less annoying version of Peebee, which is not a good sign.

Just as with Inquisition, I think Veilguard would’ve worked much better with an introduction like Origins, to give the player options in regards of the initial quest, and then simply have a flash forward to the Minrathous quest. Similar to Origin-Ostagar in DAO. They could have just done a Tyranny style origin. Tyranny's Conquest system is basically an expanded (and very well written) war table mission. NGL I would have preferred something closer to than than what we got.

Rook background equals rebel! Solas THE rebel. See any pattern here? Obviously we'll be the new trickster. You're probably on to something here. Heck, you might have guessed an aspect of the ending.

An ending I would actually be ok with, but more speculation on that later. When It comes to skepticism I have lots. The removal of stats, more action focused gameplay, some of the writing, voice acting we've seen so far, but despite It all I will play Veilguard on launch. Waited 10 years for the conclusion of Solas story, and waited even longer to see Weisshaupt, Tevinter and so on.

I actually have been pleasantly surprised by most of the dialogue so far. Although I am more worried about Neve than I was previously. (I thought she was fine in initial vertical slice, this has changed as I hear more.) However, what does annoy me about dialogue is constant need to intertwine it with action set pieces. I just want the game to feel okay with slowing down. Honestly though, this game coming out and being competent feels like a miracle I barely dared to dream of, so it’s hard for me to go too hard on it. Indeed. We were so close to the game being a multiplayer monstrosity. It:s difficult to say what sales will be. Much of it will depend on word of mouth, and reviews. Given no Dragon Age or Bioware game has released in quite a while they will have supply and demand on their side in theory. People will say BG3 filled the Bioware void, but that is literally one game. Perhaps I'm looking at things from a past era, but I look at the box art and other marketing material, and I don't see a game that stands out to audiences. Does the newer generation like purple? Like it or not but I don't think there's a palette much better than red, white, and black. It's worked for Dragon Age, Red Dead, Hitman and more.

Its like a kids Saturday morning cartoon . . . like watching Dora the Explorer. This describes the Bellara clip well. A cartoon for a very young child.

Three days ago it was 'WOW Hairs & pets', two days ago it was the 'top surgery' thing, yesterday we found out about the bobble-head effect baked into the character design, and today it's Kindegarden Special. It should now be clear to everyone who the real target audience is: the kiddies... Which means the initial reveal trailer was exactly what they intended to release. It also means the story will no doubt be thoroughly masticated, pre-digested and regurgitated for said audience. The more they reveal, the bigger of a turn off it becomes.

For the more casual audience, the AC game is likely to be a more appealing third-person adventure and it will inevitably affect DA: Veilguard's mindshare potential.

I am skeptical as well, but this Is conjecture. You've seen what? 1 or 2 percent of a full picture. Cherry picking a few things you don't like to turn yourself off from the game. You could do this with pretty much every game, book, movie and so on. Seems like a lot of the skeptic thread Is about hatred that wont change no matter how good the actual game Is.

AC Shadows could be a problem, but that game has it's own problems to deal with. Personally, I don't think there's a giant audience hankering after a day one Ubisoft experience anymore, but I could be wrong. I know I have read some headlines of Star Wars Outlaws having a difficult launch. I know personally that I'm happy to wait for a deal with Ubisoft games. Probably more saddening news to hear was that the recent Final Fantasy games haven't done as well as expected. Given Dragon Age Veilguard is actually a lot like modern Final Fantasy it is alarming.

Assassin's Creed Shadows shouldn't be much a threat to Veilguard sales, if Veilguard is good though, that can hurt Shadows. But then again I know nothing of Assassin's Creed after the 5 minute loading screens of Valhallah on my PS4, can't trust a company that does that.

Lmfao wtf is that tone? Benefit of the doubt. Maybe she’s meant to be the comedic relief? But she’s funny for all the wrong reasons. Fucking Peebee is better than this. Oh my . . . I watched the beginning of a Meeting Bellara video. The only time Bioware's managed to write a neurodivergent-coded character slightly well has been with Merrill. Bellara reads like a slightly less annoying version of Peebee, which is not a good sign I personally say they're about the same, really. IF Peebee is better, it's only by like.... .5% better... Sera was a better character than Bellara is. I'm personally worried about the writting since I've seen the 6 background origins. I can't understand how they could be so uninspired and generic. That type of story you heard it thousands of time. Even if Rook had to be railroaded into an heroic background, how is it possible that with such a rich universe, such a rich lore, you couldn't do better than " Rook saved a few folks against orders and it had consequences " and six times for god sake, even for the crows. Even Mass effect 1 has at least a real neutral/survival and ruthless background, while remaining heroic. It has more diversity between the backgrounds. You couldn't have something more creative for the wardens, a little more ambiguous and deeper than Rook saved a few villagers instead of holding the line ? So far for me, the Mourn watch is the only one that seems to save this whole disaster. Shadow dragon background, I'd say it's normal to have something like that. But why they couldn't write different things like in DAO ? They had 10 years for the writting. Ten years. Not trying to defend them, but it did undergo two massive changes - the original Joplin one, the first change being into the "Fortnite" Live service game, then back to what we have now with the second change. The problem with the writing is that the head writing for Origins has long been gone, and we now have what we have. Not that I disagree with you. I would actually prefer Origins style of how they did things.

But then again I know nothing of Assassin's Creed after the 5 minute loading screens of Valhallah on my PS4, can't trust a company that does that. An Assassin's Creed game is proportionally a bigger release than a Bioware game, at least sales-wise. I would assume you, I, and most people in here will favor a Dragon Age game if they had to choose between it and an AC game to buy this fall. But I don't think the average gamer at large will be equally inclined to go with a franchise that has been brought back from the dead after 10 years. Unless, of course, Veilguard happens to be stellar and critically acclaimed. Sales will live and die by the reviews, I reckon.

Is there a big overlap in audiences between AC and DA though? The games have a very different focus.

I still feel mixed about the Veilguard. A lot of people have changed in Bioware in the last 15 years since Origins came out and although the main story didn't change (5 game plan anyone?) Veilguard feels like a reboot of the series after a 10 year break. For example, the combat changed drastically, even the damage types were renamed, as I am sure were the factions: Lucerni to Shadow Dragons (I still think this is a terrible name), Mortalitasi to Mournwatch. And it looks like only VERY few choices from the Inquisition will matter - link to thread (contains minor spoilers). None of the choices made in DAO and DA2 will matter at all, thus there is no need for new players to play previous games.

The non reactions to the Evanuris not only being evil but being freed and walking the material plane in addition to the characters being trapped in the fade are really starting to bother me.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but if we have this level of nonreaction to all of these revelations, they should have just had the Inquisitor be the protagonist of DA4. Because as it stands, Rook is *way* too knowledgeable and *way* too well adjusted for this role.
Edit: The Divine choice wasn't imported. Who leads Orlais wasn't imported. Apparently who leads Ferelden and Orzammar doesn't even matter at this point.
Holy heck Bioware. GG. Hope firing all the good writers *snip* was worth it.

I'd say the bigger issue is the reaction to the other events, and not them being evil. I don't want to go too deep into the footage, but I suppose Varric told Rook about the information they gathered so far, so it makes sense that Rook already knows the Evanuris aren't supposed to be good.

A reminder - the forum rules all still apply. Game Developers
- We give special protection from harassment to game developers.
- Many developers lurk on our forums, some visible, others invisible. Without their work, we have no forum.
- A developer who comments or shares information may be engaged in conversation.
- A member may even disagree with them, if that is done civilly.
- We won't stand for posters haranguing a developer, demanding answers, spamming their inbox, insults, or rudeness. They are not a public punching bag nor do they have to meet 'higher standards' than any other forum member.
- If you see anyone beating up a developer, please report it straight away.
- Breaking the rules with a developer as the target will lead to a more immediate and firmer response than our standard rules, so don’t do it.

My unpopular take (though in my view a pragmatic take) is that DA: Veilguard clearly was not made for lovers of DA:O, DA2 and DA:I. It was not even made for people who have played those games in mind. If the expectation is that Bioware has returned to address the 10-year long cliffhanger, Veilguard will inevitably disappoint. The way I see it is that DA: Veilguard is a modern reboot for a newer audience. This is the "The Force Awakens" of Dragon Age.

I get the point about the reboot, and I do think they want (and most likely need) to find a new audience, but they are addressing the cliffhanger: the main plot about the game is about Solas and the Evanuris. I'd also say the game is all in in revealing even more of the deep and ancient lore of the franchise, ranging from the elven gods' past to possibly the Old Gods, the Titans and even the qunari (if Taash's ability is an indication of it). It might end up disappointing us, but as a fan of the franchise since Origins, who have speculated about those things for years, it's at the moment one of the parts I'm more interested in the game.

The way I see it is that DA: Veilguard is a modern reboot for a newer audience. This is the "The Force Awakens" of Dragon Age. But the Sequel Trilogy(in my opinion) had very significant issues with forging its own identity, and its incidental/haphazard style of worldbuilding and contrivance --- well, they gimped both the New Republic and the Empire *hard* to justify a return to the optics/brand recognition of Rebels(Resistance) vs Empire(FO). And everything I know about the behind the scenes drama of these movies development reads like one fire after the next. The entire era for the most part is radioactive, and there's a reason there's been such a push from Lucasfilm do do their Old Republic ripoff side project (the High Republic stuff) The Sequel Trilogy // doing a Force Awakens should be a cautionary tale, not a roadmap If they wanted a backdoor for younger audiences to go into the series - wouldn't it make more sense to remake the original games, or maybe have a standalone side game set in the universe----like a prequel game set in the Storms Age, for example. I dunno. There had to be more elegant ways to introduce new audiences to the setting than Vaelguard
