No thread for this so I made one. Just finished a PT with a male rogue Hawke.
I have to say this is a depressing story. It's like Empire Strikes Back, where things are looking down at the end.
Things I didn't like:
1) Realized I missed my shot at recruiting Isabela.
2) Romancing Fenris seemed so bizarre. It was like that old couple who constantly nags on one another. No, more like how one nags on and belittles the other. Fenris was not so nice to romance. Even the "positive" parts were unsatisfying to me.
3) I killed Anders. It made me sad.
4) Fenris turned on me.
5) I couldn't romance Sebastian, even if it ended up being chaste.
6) I had to slaughter an entire Dalish clan. It was horrifying.
Things I liked:
1) Hawke's Champion armor is pretty hot.
2) Hawke has two solid friends who will back him to the end: Varric and Aveline.
3) Cassandra seemed nicer here than at the beginning of DAI.
4) I now recognize the book Cassandra had and passed off to Leliana.
5) Handing Orsino and Meredith their asses. They both deserved it.
Curiosities:
1) I wonder if it was Meredith that was harvested to make red Templars.
2) It looked like Anders blew a hole in the sky. Hmm...

They only spent a night together, then Fenris leaves Hawke – so: they're not exactly a couple, until the end when Fenris feels prepared for a committed relationship. This can be disappointing but to me rather an interesting, good romance, maybe a little lame, but shows, he should heal before he can handle it. If you complete his romance, he's very nice. Then not do it. You can avoid it – but they attacked. Blame Marethari's stupidity.
***
It is. In my last and probably favourite PT I rivaled both. It was surprisingly good (especially Aveline's rivalry – Varric's was not completed, just ~50%, because it hard with a not absolutely humourless, cruel sociopath – and my Hawke was a funny, rather merciful sociopath) Nicer? She interrogated Varric, not invited him to a five-o-clock tea... (But true as well: she showed some common sense.) Orsino and Meredith far not that equally bad as the game tried to suggest badly.
***
Probably the Templars such idiots... He's great, of course, but not that great...

Dragon Age 2 is meant to be depressing, it's a tragedy Hawke tries ever so hard to make things work, provide for their family, keeping their friends and sibling safe but everything just mercilessly blows up in their faces - Bethany/Carver: ends up dead (blight), a Warden or in the Circle/Templars and to make matters worse...if Bethany is in the Circle and should you side with the Templars, she can die in that scenario too
- Hawke's mom: dies regardless of what you and those around you do
- Hawke's friends: depending on their friendship/rivalry they leave or turn on you (these are Fenris/Aveline (yes she can turn on you), Merrill, Anders and Isabela, though most of them depend on the side you take during Last Straw)
About one of the curiosities you have ...spoiler in case you've yet to play Inquisition Meredith's corpse was not mined for lyrium used by the Red Templars the lyrium the red templars use comes from the thaig where Hawke and company find the idol (how they found the thaig is revealed in Varric's personal quest in Inquisition, and slightly ties into the Legacy dlc for DA2)
in fact during dialogue with Varric it is revealed Meredith could not be removed nor destroyed, after finding that out Varric started posting guards that are regularly rotated so as not to have the lyrium influence their minds.
Though to be fair...Dragon Age 2 can be as depressing or tragic as you want it to be yes certain parts are unavoidable, but with timing and managing your team during quests you can get everyone on your side by the end of the game (barring Sebastian or Anders depending on the latter's fate)
Also adding a few things here: Sebastian ASAP - Bi Seb (apparently this allows for Sebastian to be recruited in Act 1 as opposed to Act 2, and also unlocks his romance plot for male Hawke (not sure how well this works, since I don't use mods that change romance criteria) Never hostile Dalish (I can confirm this works since I've used it for the past few playthroughs. Basically it changes a few flags used in Merrill's Act 3 quest, so Hawke can choose any dialogue they want without having to kill the clan)

About one of the curiosities you have ...spoiler in case you've yet to play Inquisition I did. I'm now seeing events in DAI in an entirely different light. I had no idea how DA2 was a direct set-up for DAI. This was not the case between DAO and DA2. The Meredith thing wasn't so far off. She did have a piece of the idol. She might qualify as a red lyrium statue. I remember the red lyrium in Legacy but don't recall anyone seeing it as remarkable. Even when Bodahn looks at it all he says is that it's raw lyrium. Not comment about the color. Too bad Sandal wasn't around in DAI to fix all the red lyrium issues. Thanks for pointing me to this. I always had to use the SS Kaidan mod in ME but I'm not [yet] as invested in DA2 Sebastian ASAP sounds sketchy because I think it would too greatly alter his story. I just wanted to be able to romance him in the same way female Hawke could have. Never Hostile Dalish sounds good but I think I'll just try to make better choices with Merrill.

Never Hostile Dalish sounds good but I think I'll just try to make better choices with Merrill. technically the only nod toward Legacy is Bianca mentioning Larius/Janeka being the Warden she told the location of the thaig. To which Varric replies to the Inquisitor he and Hawke met them during the events of Legacy (which Varric saying Larius wasn't a mage before if he's the one Hawke supported, since Bianca says she met a Warden mage).
Origins and DA2 sort of take place around the same time. DA2's prologue takes place a few days(maybe a week) after the events at Ostagar...DA2 then continues along the way and sets up events for Inquisition. I do agree that DA2 and Origins don't have that same set up, but that's mostly because they start around the same time and (of screen) run simultaneously from one another
I'm sorry to hear you didn't find a romance in DA2 that you liked. But imo. if you play out Fenris' romance it is well worth it (or Anders...but as I understand you didn't really enjoy him).
I personally do use Isabela ASAP because her showing up a tad earlier then normal isn't too game breaking (plus her reactions during Anders' recruitment quest are funny) , I agree that the Sebastian one does sound a bit story breaking mostly because lore wise he spends the next few years trying to gain support from Dumar to retake Starkhaven, and also finding out who hired the Flint mercenaries. According to the mod page you can still leave this quest until the second Act...but then I ask myself what the use is of the mod in the first place

It's a shame, he's DLC character. I think, his quests are good addition to the story, lore.

I do like Sebastian, as character – as Anders' opposite. It's a shame, he's DLC character. I think, his quests are good addition to the story, lore. mhm, there's a mod that avoids Sebastian's 'crisis' making him available alongside Anders for the final battle, but imo. that doesn't make much sense since Anders being alive/dead is his cause for leaving or staying
I like Sebastian as well, but many people don't use him because he's behind a dlc (though that's not a problem anymore these days since the dlc's can be downloaded for free)

I am starting a new playthrough today. And it is one that will actually be streamed live, starting tonight and likely twice a week on Fridays and Saturdays.
Hoping to do a full playthrough and role-play of it, so Friendship/Rivalry gains/losses will be real-time and not an attempt to game the system. Also likely going to go Male Mage, which was my original playthrough and havent done in years.
Hope it will be fun, will be interesting to see folks watch me play this time around.

DA2 gets a lot of flak, but I think it did several things really well. Better than DAI even. I think most quests and characters are more interesting than DAI which was largely boring to me on both fronts. Hawke as a character is extremely entertaining (and more grounded) as is the banter between he/she and the party members. I like the more personal and smaller scaled story. I do not mind how depressing the game is as I think its a strong point of the game. Its just a shame that the game repeats so many environments and the gameplay is not fun. It would be a great game otherwise. However, I'm not sure how much changes if Isabella is not recruited. I've always recruited her. She is a character I want to like more, but I just can't. I find her actions incredibly selfish and hard to forgive. Her romance is also pretty weak and it makes Hawke look like a putz. He's literally waiting years for her to come around it seems. Its also really dumb your decision to hand her to the Arishok doesn't stick at all.

Somebody liked one of my posts in this thread, so... The thread is located in the DAI section. Not a place I'm going to look to discuss DA2. In contrast to the MET, there is an MET section rather than ME1, ME2 and ME3 separately. So, from that perspective, can you see why I'd think there was no thread for DA2? Edit/Add: Imagine this scenario. I'm new to DA. Maybe I played DAO, maybe not. I fire up DA2 for the first time and want to tell the world what I did while playing. I know DAI is there but don't want to go into that area because I haven't yet played it. What do I do?

I was just saying that there's no overarching DA area in which a person might see the "What did you do today" for all of DA. Given that I've been playing DA games for years it should be telling.

Well...
Yesterday I somehow beat the Sky Horror without losing a single party member.
It took me 4 hours but somehow Isabela survived, Aveline drew all the mobs and most importantly my mage Hawke and Tallis drew three Winter's Grasp + Drop Dead combos in a row.

Would have been really nice to have different threads "what did you do in DAO/DA2/DAI". At least in this case I know where to look, for example, DA2 information about others' PTs, read, learn, discuss, ask etc. without reading posts about games I do not need right now. Understand there might be not many posts in each thread if compare to that whole DAT thread, but as for a player and member of the forum (me at least) - it would have been more productive.
