Meh it removed the principal motive of why I'm interested in this franchise: the mix of advanced sci-fi and medieval fantasy. Now, it's just a generic JRPG with a brand.

Gosh this actually reminded me of dragon age quite a bit. This is much more gritty than your usual final fantasy. I was surprised when blood splattered all over the kids face. Also "spread of the blight" and the marshy place with undead also brought me right back to thedas.

Seems like they are walking back the PC release.
After watching that video I think its the least interested I can remember being at a Final Fantasy game. I really don't get a Final Fantasy vibe from this and if I didn't recognize the names they use for some of the creatures I probably wouldn't even guess this video was for a Final Fantasy game.

Seems like they are walking back the PC release. Yeah, Sony said it'll be an exclusive for 6 months, then the PC release, then 6 months after that it'll be on (presumably) XBSX.

While I liked some of the monster designs, I can't say this trailer really grabbed me. It's a bit more generic fantasy than I was expecting.
Still... will keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't see it mentioned so I was thinking it was some kind of announcement they weren't ready for yet and trying to walk it back for a bit.

Why is it so dark and murky? Where is the whimsy, the high fantasy, bright colors, silly, ridiculous outfits and hairstyles? This looks so uninspired...

I had to turn the brightness up all the way on my phone to watch the trailer.
Normally I'm all down for some FF, but, I'm not hooked so far on this one.
Something to keep the eye on for later perhaps, once more is revealed.

Hmmm, it's understandable that people are disappointed with the lack of technological aspects but I think that's a minor concern. With each game being a standalone that's easily replaceable next game. The combat has me interested. The problem with most JRPGs is their out of date combat systems. Most JRPGs have struggled to move on from the turn based era and for Final Fantasy 12's combat was different to 13's was different to 15's. This feels more like a modern actiony approach to RPGs and if they can do a decent job at that I'll be really impressed and happy

This looks... really bad to me. While 13 wasn't exactly a great game, the trailer looked good at least. Heck, even 15 had good graphics at least. FF used to dazzle graphics wise. This looks cheap ass to me. I'm confused...
Weirdest FF trailer I've ever seen. Nothing shown looked impressive in any way except maybe for the Morbol fight. The guardian forces, whatever they're called now, look bad too. Then again they haven't looked good the past two games either. 13 was particularly bad.
I don't mind the darker medieval tone per se but this looks really generic. I have no idea what's going on in this trailer.
I keep hoping they'll do another game like 9, straight fantasy characters. But nope. More emo dudes. Really sick of this franchise, I guess. And JRPGs in general. Worst trailer of the showcase.

Yoshida is overseeing it, and he's a rockstar in the community atm (took the wreckage of FF14 and completely resurrected it) and rumours are that the lady who wrote the Shadowbringers expansion for FF14 (also beloved by the community because the story of Shadowbringers was amazing) is directly involved. So there's quite a bit of hype for the content for 16. People in FF14 kept wanting to talk about it lol There's a lot of faith in Yoshida and what he'll bring to FF16

But ok then, I hope the story delivers. Doubtful I'll ever buy another FF game myself, I tired of JRPG tropes and storytelling over ten years ago. But since 15 seems to not have been popular in general, I hope Square scores with 16 again. I actually liked 13's story and that bold suggestive climax scene, it was most of the characters that were insufferable. Andromeda's characters look like masterpieces compared to FF13 as far as I'm concerned. Then the 15 boy band manifested and I went "I'm OUT for good", lol.

Andromeda's characters look like masterpieces compared to FF13 as far as I'm concerned. Then the 15 boy band manifested and I went "I'm OUT for good", lol. Yes Final Fantasy lost it's way for a very long time. FFX was really one of the last really beloved FF's and that released almost 20 years ago. They tried to modernise after that, FF12 had action combat was kinda bland, then they scrapped it for 13 but that was universally panned (so they made 2 more games in the series. Those 3 games sold I think 8 million copies, FFXV reportedly sold more than all 3 of those games). FFXV went in a completely different direction again. Which is kinda where Yoshida comes in. The first thing Yoshida did when he took over the dumpster fire that was 14 was sit his development team down and got them to play World of Warcraft. The whole design of 14 was obsolete and old fashioned and he wanted his development team (he's a really big MMO and gamer in general) to understand what made a modern, top MMO. It's one of the main reasons he was able to turn around 14, he's a big MMO fan he got his team to play top modern MMOs, they took what made those successful and combined it with their own vision. I don't think it's a coincidence people are saying this game looks like Dragon Age. FF games in general suffer from the same problem, they had an obsolete design and were struggling to modernise. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the first things Yoshida did was sit the development team down and got them to play top modern western RPGs (and Dark Souls. Horizon wouldn't have been released I think). Which would be you know Skyrim, Dark Souls, and Dragon Age Inquisition. That's not to say this game will be a carbon copy or generic, but one of the things that makes Yoshida so special and so beloved is he listens. He listens to the fans, he's passionate, he's a big gamer as well. There's no one I would trust more at Square Enix to modernise Final Fantasy but also keep what makes FF special (except for the technology ) We'll have to see, Yoshida's only a Producer not a director, but I'm very interested to see how it plays EDIT: My bad, the latest figures reported was the three 13 games sold a combined 11 million compared to FF15 which sold 9.

I mean... imma still get it, but when people were saying "back to their roots", I was kind of hoping that they meant zany characters and moments, cute critters, humour and (in my wildest dreams) the return of a more turn-based combat style and the Job system.
As for the "medieval" look, I have every confidence that there will still be airships and some backstory about an advanced precursor civ and so on. Like, FF1-6 and 9 have a "medieval" look too, and the party still goes under the sea or to the fucking moon and fights giant robots and shit, lol.
I'd bet money that it turns out they used to have a far more technologically advanced world, and then the planet was devastated by the "Eikon War" (I'd even bet that that is the exact name for the event), and civilization had to rebuild from scratch.

IGN @ignSquare Enix has "completed basic development and scenario production" on Final Fantasy 16. bit.ly/2GKEfn5 Wow, it's almost like maybe... Nomura shouldn't direct things? That can't be right... I just hope this doesn't end up being the same kind of bleak, dour, dull-ass, nonsensical, rushed and incomplete misery-fest that FFXV was.

I actually don't think this game looks like Dragon Age. To me, the aesthetics and some of the enemy movements look more like Dark Souls.

Thanks for sharing! It looks more promising to me now that some things in the trailer have context. I'm excited, this game looks a little different with enough of the old tropes and the grounds for what can become a pretty intriguing story.
