Currently doing a PC build myself. Funnily enough the only reason it’s taken me so long to get to actually building it are the case fans I ordered. Apparently they’re being shipped from China and I’ve had no indication of when they will arrive for two weeks. I’ll have to see about some pictures of my new components. That's strange. I checked my local store's website and they have Noctua fans in abundance. Did you order some kind of special fans?
And yes, pictures please!

And yes, pictures please! Yes, I have made the probably dubious decision to make my build glow up like a Christmas tree so I got some 140mm RGB fans from Corsair. www.corsair.com/ww/en/Categories/Products/Fans/RGB-%26-LED-Fans/ml-pro-rgb-config/p/CO-9050078-WWI ordered them through NewEgg, but actually through some Chinese partner of theirs. Honestly I have fans that would do the job, but they’re apparently already shipped so I’m waiting.

Those are nice, if tad expensive. And yes, they would indeed seem to be in short supply. I'm betting it's because they have trouble getting controller units.

Anything from Asia is going to take a while to get to North America. I ordered some SATA cables and they took TWO MONTHS to get here. 2. Some Newegg shipments from Asia can be very deceptive in what you actually end up with. NOT saying all are but of the 10 shipments I ordered from Asia I have had only TWO turned out to be what I had actually ordered.

Kingston though it is HQ'd in California and was founded as an American company with offices in the US, Europe, Ireland and China, the RAM often comes from China and it is horrible. IF you can find a batch of Kingston DDR4 that actually comes from, Taipei, Taiwan....That's the good stuff. As with nearly ever PC component......All the good quality stuff that is dependable and rock solid, comes from Taiwan.
But there are batches that will be manufactured in and shipped from mainland China, and that stuff is notoriously horrible and defective. Have had two builds from previous years in the early 2000s where I had wanted to go with Kingston RAM becuse that is what I had been using since the early to mid 1990s.....But after two batches, I took my rig back to Canada COmputers and they told me that they had had batches come from China and that a great many customers had returned their Kingston RAM with complaints of defectiveness. They then did some digging into the problem...and found that the one common factor is that all the defective Kingston RAM had been made and shipped from China.
So they then recommended G.SKILL....and I've been a G.SKILL user ever since, going back to about 2006-2007. The Gskill modules are actually made by Samsung and then G.Skill makes performance increase to the timings etc and adds their own heat-sinks etc. A great many of people at various PC oriented companies have told me that for all the RAM they sell, G.SKILL is sold the most and comes back with the least number of complaints or failure rates. It's also the 'best bang for your buck'.
In the 15 years I have been using G.SKILL I have only ever had to RMA one module, and it was replaced within 3 days completely free and of no cost to me.

I've had no trouble with Corsair sticks. I'd say better than Kingston but not as good as G.skill. But I still recommend not buying the cheapest ones, get Value Select or even better Vengeance.

Very nice, I like it a lot! I like everything, except maybe the PSU, but that's just me. Corsair is ok as a brand, but I prefer to overkill the wattage [disclaimer: I am aware of the overkill controversy].
Those memory sticks are a thing of beauty.

I infrequently as I would use a Blu-ray drive and have need of a 5.25" drive bay....There are times when I do need it, want one (for such things as watching a movie on my PC as Heimdall said or the odd time when I need to reinstall an older game like my physical DVD copy of ME 1)....so it's definitely in the category of a "not necessarily need, but a nice to have".
And I totally agree about the RAM. I really like G.SKILL. If I couldn't get G.SKILL, I'm not sure what brand I would go with.....Perhaps Mushkin? But I would hunt high and low, go to the ends of the earth to find G.SKILL modules above anything else. For me, they really are the most reliable, best performing Memory for the money you pay.
And if I had a BD drive brand of choice it would always be LG. In terms of Power Supplies....my #1 go to brand is EVGA, but I could possibly be convinced to return to using Corsair though I don't think they are quite as good in quality as they once were yet they are still as expensive...and in comparison to EVGA they don't have the same performance especially when factoring int he cost. In my experience over the past decade, Corsair PSUs have been 'middle of the road' and the quality of components for each model have been very up/down. Like SONY with their TVs, they put the absolute best of the best in their abslute most expensive TV, and the rest of average quality, hit and miss or bottom of the barrel, yet still somehow command a top-dollar. where as EVGA have been nothing short of stellar in every way and they seem to produce an average equality in parts and performance for their low end Bronze models....while stepping up in performance and quality as you go to Silver, Gold, Platinum or TI, but the price for each respective tier remains reasonable. Expensive but reasonable considering performance and warranty.

I just read a review for the W D Black M.2/Nvme....and the Reviewer rates that new drive as the best on the market, surpassing even Samsung in both quality and performance. This is an interesting comment, because as for quality, durability, performance etc I have always gone for WD if buying mechanical drives....and then SAMSUNG for SSDs and M.2s. When first searching for my original M.2 to go with my Phoenix SLI, I was first going to go with Western Digital because of the reputation they have for their mechanical drives, but I was told at the time back in 2016, that the quality and performance of WD SSDs and M.2s were merely average, middle of the road..and that the best brand to go with for 2.5 inch SSDs and M.2s was Samsung. So when buying SSDs and M.2s I have always gone with Samsung (and have never been disappointed) but reading/seeing this review for the Western Digital Black Gaming Performance M.2..... I could be convinced to switch back to Western Digital for future builds. Though several of these other reviews give mixed results and 'average' ratings, saying that 'performance' is dependant on capacity with 1TB or larger having the best performance and smaller capacities...not so much. Interesting reads, nonetheless www.tweaktown.com/reviews/9664/wd-black-sn850-1tb-nvme-2-ssd/index.htmlwww.pcmag.com/reviews/wd-black-nvme-ssdwww.tomshardware.com/reviews/wd-black-nvme-ssd-review,5530-3.html Personally for SSDs and M.2s I still prefer SAMSUNG, and I don't think I would ever go back to using a magnetic/mechanical drive...though as previously mentioned in another Discussion Thread, I do have two WD Blue 2 TB mechanical HDDs.

I would like to use M.2 but the price point is still kinda up there beyond my range. Solid State Drives again for my location -up the side of a mountain with many storms have kept being killed. Most likely due to the power outages and or power surges.
For instance this system right now is using 4 4TB drives. I personally used Western Digital Black drives for over 10 years and they were good -then. However they did keep needing replacing every 3 years or so -annoying for a 24/7 machine.
Now though I have so much data that I had to jump to 4TB drives and since I like longevity decided to go to Enterprise drives. Problem is that Western Digital Enterprise drives are junk: overheating, buzzing, mtbf schame, ect. So was forced to use the Seagate Eaos drives or what ever they are called.
Never had good fortune with Seagate drives if the drop they always died no maybe getting them to work to salvage data. Though so far not issues.
A brand I used to favor though was Maxtor -NOW that was a brand that could take a licking and keep ticking. However they were bought out by Seagate. Got 3 drives after their bought out date and they all failed horribly -up in a puff of fire and smoke -literally. However I still have 500GB drive from before the date and it is still going 20+ years later.
As to power supplies... I will admit that is a weak area of mine. However I have started looking more closely at this over the years and used to go with Antec but they are nothing anymore in the high-end market. So I switched over to Seasonic and have nothing but praises for them.

I didn't think it was worth posting an update, but I actually replaced one of my 1TB Samsung 980 Pro with a 2TB WD Black SN850. I bought two of them. One for my new PC and one for my laptop. I'll use it as my dedicated Steam drive. So far it has been working pretty well. Like the 980 Pro, the controller runs a bit warm. So you should use a heatsink/heat spreader on it. I think you can get it directly from Western Digital if your motherboard doesn't come with an M.2 heat spreader. Longevity wise, I'm not sure how durable they are. Only time will tell.

Whoa....For two of those SN850 WD Black Gaming Performance drives, that must've cost you a small fortune. At least here in Canada at Canada Computers, the 2 TB capacity WD Black drives that are in your picture are $589.00 each.....That's a huge price tag for an SSD of any form factor for capacity.

I actually had to pre-order them from Western Digital. They were about $450 USD each. After the 10% promotion discount, I think I paid about $860 total.
It was just too bad that Samsung didn't have any 2TB 980 Pro drives when I built my PC. Otherwise, I would probably get those instead.

That's a pretty penny, but then again perfectly in line with the rest of the build. I didn't mention this before, but I was impressed by the fact your MB had two full speed M.2 slots. I even checked the manual! I built my gaming rig a year ago, and while it has two slots, it can handle only one at full speed. Hence my rig has only one M.2 drive for OS and games and spinning drives for storage.

The X570 chipset also communicates with the CPU through 4 other PCIe lanes and then gives you an additional 16 PCIe lanes. The second NVMe slot actually gets 4 lanes from the X570 chipset instead of the CPU. So the first NVMe should get more bandwidth than the second one since it's not sharing them with other devices, but I doubt I'll see any difference if all I do is play games.

If your motherboard doesn't have the necessary slots you could always use something like this -note there are 2 and 4 slot versions:
That said that is more than I could ever spend on hard drives. Right now if I update I would need 16 total TB. And at those prices... that would be 450x8 so... $3600!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least with these Seagate Exos -drives I spent only $160 per drive on 4 4TB drives. So... 160x4... or $640!
Math isn't my strong point but that has 78% reduction in cost -I think.
Price to performance ratio of storage is still to much of a premium unfortunately for some of us...
Though if I could I would go Nvme -if they have a longevity of at least 5 to 7 years.
Is their most knowledge of Nvme long term longevity?

Even if you use an expansion card, the PCIe lanes are still shared. So if you plug that into one of the x16 PCIe slots, your motherboard will most likely split the 16 lanes that go to your GPU into 8 lanes. Thus the video card will run at x8 speed and the NVMe expansion card will also run at x8 speed. That's why if you look closely, that expansion card is actually made for Threadripper mobos. Threadripper gets 64 lanes from the CPU and an additional 24 lanes from the chipset. Unlike the desktop Ryzen 3000/5000 CPUs where they only get 24 from the CPU with 4 of those are used to communicate with the chipset and leaving you only 20 available lanes.

So the first NVMe should get more bandwidth than the second one since it's not sharing them with other devices, but I doubt I'll see any difference if all I do is play games. I rechecked, and it would seem we were both right about this. The X570 chipset supports three M.2 drives:
1. straight from the CPU 2. a dedicated 32Gbps bus from the northbridge 3. a shared PCIe bus from the northbridge
The dedicated bus isn't sharing bandwidth, it is in it's own bus, thus your MB has two full speed M.2 slots. But since the northbridge has many duties, it is unlikely the second drive is as fast as the drive in the CPU bus.
The third slot unfortunately isn't there, but it is a sign of things to come. We might be getting MBs with only M.2 slots in the future.
