I will be able to sleep at night now. I know it doesn't bother rewindbutton bmwcrazy though. Guess that is the price of being never able to shut my thinking off. Doesn't hurt to browse the BSN Tech Thread after all. Why would I lose sleep over someone else's PC issues? I'm not your IT department or technical support and I don't get paid for this. Haha. As long as all my things are up and running perfectly, I'll only lose my beauty sleep if I do too much coke at a party or something.

As stated I KNEW it would not bother you so no need to laugh in my direction. For me the unknown must be known -no matter who or what it is. It adds to the knowledge base -even if the knowledge added is known -it is added with unknown additional understanding. Think movie: Short Circut: I am a problem finder and solver. So if someone has a problem -especially a tech problem it is fun for me to solve it. I don't care if I get paid for it. Though I have been in the past. Also in relation to drugs, intoxication and such parties... My view would be an unpopular one but I'll say it this way: They are an inefficient use of living.

Hi guys,
I was wondering if you could help me with certain decisions regarding my new PC build.
I need a board for the 13700K I ordered last night to replace my 4790K. But I'm overwhelmed by the choices. Do I need a Z790 or would a B760 do? Or maybe a Z690 with Bios flashback? I don't want to overspend on a board since I don't need wifi, don't need on-board sound, don't need bluetooth. And I don't plan on overclocking the CPU, or RAM for that matter.(I already ordered DDR5 RAM 5600 for a good price.)
I'm currently using 2 SATA SSDs and 2 HDDs. I need to add another SSD soon probably. M.2 this time. So I guess any board will do for that?? I read the B boards run hot with a 13700K, is that true? Btw I also need a new cooler and was thinking beQuiet Dark Rock 4 Pro, seems the most popular in Germany.
I'd like to use this setup 8-9 years again if possible without having to tinker with it.
I missed a really good sale on a Z790 board a few days ago because I was on vacation. So I might wait for another on any of those. Unless there are some that should be avoided?
GPU and new PSU are something else I might have to consider soon depending on how well Starfield runs on a 1080Ti but that's more about how much do I want to get ripped off by Nvidia (and AMD for that matter)... so I don't really need recommdations there.

Hi! People's opinions vary, but I like the MSI Tomahawk series of boards. My recommendation would be the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi. It ticks some of your boxes: I don't want to overspend I don't plan on overclocking Yes, there's Wi-Fi and whatnot, but you can always disable them from BIOS. Not sure how reliable PCGamer is these days, but here's the review: MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi

Off Topic: just finished season five - this is second round of watching the series, like it even more now. On Topic: Friends i7-8700K+nvme is _so_ much faster doing anything compared to my ye olde i7-4960X+sata setup. I guess I'll buy the new machine in two to three months.. haven't got time to basically install stuff into it if I'll buy it now. Also audio projects are still open, we'll get them closed around autumn. Too much of a hassle with iLok and all the plugins we use for composing and FX's. Basically need to deactivate everything on this machine first for the smoothest ride, then install them on the new machine and activate licenses... phew that'll take around a day at least. Need to fetch latest versions of plugins also before doing that. And we just bought EZ Drummer 3

Hi! People's opinions vary, but I like the MSI Tomahawk series of boards. Naturally that's one of the most expensive right now, lol. I'm hoping to get a deal around 200€. I think I jumped the gun on the RAM. The one I ordered is 5600 CL36. I could get 6000 CL30 for just a few bucks more. (And then I'd have to use XMP and hope for the best.) And apparently latency matters the most. (Yes, I'm still somewhat computer illiterate, lol.) I could still return it (Amazon) without opening it. Should I? Or will the difference in fps be so negligible at 1440p I shouldn't sweat it? I keep reading that DDR5 isn't worth it for gaming. But will be useful for the video editing I do. So I'm going with DDR5 anyway. I bought the slowest DDR3 RAM in 2015. No idea how much it held me back. Friend bought a DDR4 system but it was a 200€ difference at the time,so I chose DDR3. I never felt I chose wrong. But I don't want to buy at the tail end again and regret it this time. RAM prices have really come done this year. The 32GB kit I ordered is 109€. That's acceptable to me. 115€ for the faster kit.

one of the most expensive I think you'll find that, it's more like a budget to mid range board. Expensive would be something like Gigabyte Z790 AORUS MASTER or ASRock Z790 Taichi Carrara. apparently latency matters the most Latency is important, yes, but unless you plan on doing memory OCing, I wouldn't sweat about it. If you use XMP, make sure the memory manufacturer mentions the settings on their site. If not, it's not worth the hassle if something goes wrong. So I'm going with DDR5 anyway. Like Unicephalon 40-D said, this is the way. MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi I should've mentioned, that the board comes with two versions, DDR4 and DDR5; get the DDR5 version. Not my expertise, but fast memory never hurts. BTW, make sure your memory sticks don't interfere with your CPU cooler.

(jep ) I'd go for either largest Noctua or some 360 or 420 sized pump for either one of the CPU's. 12th/13th gen i7/i9's are hot hot HOT! AMD is way cooler atm. and can run nice even at 65W! I also added some links to previous post.

Thank you all for your input! By expensive I meant of the midrange Z790. The ones below 300€. I'm aiming at a 200€, as I mentioned before. Yeah, I'll probably keep the RAM I bought off Amazon. I doubt it matters much. I won't have to bother with XMP either this way. The RAM I bought is a fairly low/short one and should fit! My current setup has super low RAM too and a flat CPU cooler that goes over the RAM a bit and cooles both. But I can't reuse it. The Noctua D15 I find too expensive. The Dark Rock 4 is only 3 degrees hotter, I read, but costs much less. I have an old Noctua D14 lying around but doubt it makes sense. Not sure if I can get an adapter for 1700 in any case. I have no idea how hot my old computer runs. I never tested it. *g* All I know is I never had any issues with my setup. None. No hardware failure. No shutdowns. No driver issues, nothing. That's why I'm going Intel again. Also for the better performance for video rendering. It's going to be a MASSIVE upgrade. My videos take super long to render. Last one took like 90min! Discovered something went wrong and I had to do it all over again. Can't wait to not waste so much time anymore! Of course I also can't wait to not get constant stuttering while gaming due to stuff struggling to load in!

Just a very quick look-see....I found this: GIGABYTE Z690 AORUS ELITE AX LGA 1700 Intel 12th/13th Gen Ready, ATX Motherboard with DDR5, Quad M.2, PCIe 5.0, USB 3.2 Gen 2X2 Type-C, WiFi 6, 2.5GbE LAN Here in Canada it is retailing for $269.99 CAD And this is a newer 790 chipset you might be interested in: GIGABYTE Z790 GAMING X AX LGA 1700 Intel Z790 ATX Motherboard with DDR5, M.2, PCIe 5.0, USB 3.2 Gen2X2 Type-C, Intel Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5GbE LAN, Q-Flash Plus, EZ-Latch Plus *this second board retails here for 349.00 Reg MSRP. (not sure what your budget is, but I thought those pieces might be of interest or at least taking a look at). On the GPU side of things....iF they still existed I would recommend EVGA *paws downs* no questions asked. But as their GPU division is now defunct, my next GPU brand recommendation would be Gigabyte. As for Power Supplies.....This is one thing that EVGA is concentrating on. In my opinion and experience their PSUs are equal to Silverstone, and they have an industry leading 10 year warranty. The 850 P2 is an excellent unit. And lastly, you mentioned you might want to use an M.2 drive this time around......If your motherboard of choice supports it, I say go for it. So much faster and takes up even less space than a 2.5 inch SSD. My two recommendations for brands are: 1- Samsung EVO (the 970 or 980 would be an excellent choice if paired with a 13700) and 2) I've heard good things about Western Digital Black series. Hope this helps!

Seasonic for power supply. Or Seasonic made power supply like corsair etc. They've lasted the longest (actually none of them have broken in use, just moved on / given to someone). Seasonic Focus Plus 850W Platinum is like 199€ and has manufacturers 10 to 12 year warranty. They're generally used by other brands as their flagship/silent options. fex. pcmecca.com/best-psu-brands/

So had the company I have had make my last 3 gaming PC's build this for and got it just over a week ago. All is good except after activating Windows 11 and installing Office 365 it installed the trial version and installed everything on One Drive which I really did not want. Used the Microsoft Support and Recovery tool to undo that and install the full licensed version of Office 365 and got that all set up. Noticed that the documents folder was installed on One Drive still so stupidly in hindsight set up a new Documents folder on the C:\ and copied all my backed files to that location including gaming stuff for the EA App, Ubisoft Connect and Steam. Installed Ubisoft Connect and AC Odyssey and it all worked wonderfully as Saves were all on the Cloud. Installed the EA App and MEA and the fun began as when I opened the game it couldn't find my old saves 1,800+ hours of gaming. This is when I discovered that Ubi Connect and the EA App had been installed in the One Drive "Documents" folder and my saves were of course in the Documents folder I created on C:\Users Moved the saves and all was well with the world but I am hating having my documents file on One Drive and it being the default location for things to install (and I cannot change it after many different attempts) so was looking for a way to fix this. I found there is an option in Windows Update to do a "Fresh Start" and as I have delinked One Drive now hopefully, I can reinstall everything locally rather than involving One Drive at all. Has anyone used the Fresh Start option? It is no real hassle for me to back everything up (documents etc.) to my external drive but it also says it will keep personal files. Again wondered if anyone has used Fresh Start and that option. I can live with how it as it is now if it's a big deal or a risk but otherwise I'd like to fix it and not have it nagging me all the time. Any advice/help appreciated.

A lot of 13th-gen owners use 6400-7200mhz DDR5, but honestly you won't notice any difference unless you spend most of your time running benchmarks. Also motherboards have gotten a lot more expensive over the past two or three years. Nowadays $300 is about the average price for a mid-range motherboard. $200 is now considered the cheapest lineup. There's nothing wrong with that though. As long as it works and it's stable without any issues, it's a good motherboard regardless the price.

I would not recommend a Z690 for a 13700k build unless you feel comfortable updating the BIOS. A lot of Z690 motherboards still require a BIOS update to use 13th-gen Intel chips. So just get a Z790, H770, or B760 motherboard if you plan on using a 13700k.

My videos take super long to render. Someone in the know could tell me, is this done solely by the CPU? Because 3D rendering has been moving towards GPU rendering in the last years. So ... depends. On my work laptop its hybrid rendering with CPU+GPU, but on my work desktop its only using GPU. It being Premiere Pro.

Yeah I had to use it with Win10 back in the early days of the OS. It works. Its just a fresh OS then. Copy the documents to external drive and fresh it up!
