So I ahve a mystery that I need (and would appreciate) some help in solving. I just today installed a new 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 to replace a 512gb 950 EVO Pro that was nearing capacity. I cloned the 950 to the 970 Plus using Samsung Magician and it worked without a hitch. Cloned perfectly fine, no bumps along the way. Then I turned off my PC and installed the new drive into the single 2280 slot that I had, went into the BIOS of my x-99 Phoenix SLI and changed the Boot Priority #1 to the new 970 M.2.....and in my journey of navigating the BIOS, I noticed some things that didn't look quite right.
1) the DDR 4 speed was reset to the Default of all DDR4 which is 2133 (when it should be set at the Tested Speed of 2400).....And the only way I found to change that was to enable an XMP Profile. Fine. Problem 1 solved.
2) I have a Crucial MX 300 SSD that I use strictly for Storage back-up, but under the Boot Priorities the BIOS picked that up as a Secondary Bootable Drive even though it doesn't have an OS on it. Again, strictly for file storage. (Mystery #2......Temporarily worked around but not solved; by Disabling the SEcondary Boot Priority)
#3) And here is my main mystery......My CPU is an Intel 6850K, 5th Gen Broadwell-E. Six Cores at 3.6 Ghz per core. I have never ever OC'd my CPU because I don't know how to do it safely (or really at all) so I have always left well enough alone and kept it at the base frequency of 3.6 Ghz per core.
EXCEPT.......For some very weird, strange and mysterious reason in the BIOS it is OC'd on its own (literally Ithink it was a ghost in the machine) to 3.7 Ghz. The Core Frequency is set to "AUTO" (which should be 3.6) but the Ratio is 1.00x and both are grayed out and I am unable to change anything. The 'spread' is +100 or 1.0 to 3.7 but it is grayed-out and I can not change anything.
I am not concerned about the speed being too much........The mystery I would like to solve is what would cause the CPU to randomly OC itself (or the BIOS to do that for that matter). I have never touched anything to do with the CPU Core Frequency or anything else of that nature.
But I can not change things back to the stock values as they should be.........
Can someone who is familiar with OC'ing and the Gigabyte X-99 BIOS please help me solve this?
Thank you!

Can someone who is familiar with OC'ing and the Gigabyte X-99 BIOS please help me solve this? Thank you! 1. There should be an option in a drop down for Manual along with AUTO and XMP. If not something wrong in the BIOS or may need BIOS update. 2. The Crucial did have the OS on it and you wiped it after the clone process?
IF SO then that is most likely why this a problem. Contrary to popular belief -cloning doesn't work perfectly all the time -even if programs say they do. ESPECIALLY if you upscale from a smaller drive to a larger one. Cloning for the most part is to clone drives the same size. Doesn't mean you can't do it -you and I have after all. Though if you ever clone an OS to put to a drive bigger than 4TB -it will not work easily.
IF you wiped the 950 after the clone process did you also wipe the partitions?
Best to check by right clicking on This PC and click Manage and check the Partition layout.
IF NOT then there may be a small partition still on it for OS boot. BE CAREFUL though this doesn't mean that partition is safe to delete. It could be tied to the current OS. Best to check with only your primary drive connected and see if system boots. IF it does go ahead and power down and add the other drive back to system. Get back to Windows and reduce the drive to only one partition and then format the drive.
IF it doesn't boot then the OS is tied to having both drives connected. The best you can do in this situation is to wipe the now redundant drive partitions but leave the booting partition alone.. It shouldn't matter much booting partitions are not really that big.
3. I think this is actually an issue with motherboard manufacturer's turning features on by default on their motherboards.
Specifically an overclocking feature on their motherboards -that EVEN if you turn it off in the BIOS -it remains on. There is more to it than that but after they pulled this underhanded stunt I haven't looked much at Intel. I digress...
Is the AUTO function greyed out or the Ratio and Multiplier? There should be some sort of drop down menu if you click on Auto that gives the options of Manual or Offset. If they are there then set the ratio to 3.6 and the ratio to 1.00x
If not there again you may want to update your BIOS -AGAIN WARNING never update to the latest BIOS always use the one a month behind. For this will have the most bugs worked out of it.

Hey, morning Vanguard. Thank you so much for your reply. To answer your questions: #2) I have not wiped the original 950 Pro...I always keep older drives as back-ups in case something....goes wrong. I have been thinking about re-installing the 950 and checking the BIOS for original settings and/or changes and making a adjustments/comparisons. #3) I have never updated the BIOS, never ever. The first and original Factory Default version was created by Gigabyte on May 22, 2016 for that Board (or that series of motherboards) and I purchased it in July of 2016 within the first week that it was released to Retailers. The original and Factory Default BIOS Vserion at the time of purchase was dated the day of its creation. Version "F 2". There are several others between July and August 2016 (this one is clearly marked in red as a BETA release due to new CPU Alpine Support) 1 month after release to retail, June 22 2017 (this one is clearly marked in red as BETA and the last ones are the Spring of 2018 SEE HERE: www.gigabyte.com/ca/Motherboard/GA-X99-Phoenix-SLI-rev-10/support#support-dl-biosAgain, I am still using the first and original Factory Default BIOS verion of F2 from the original Date of Purchase in July 2016......July 27th if memory serves me correctly though I would need to check my receipts. The AUTO Function in the BIOS (Re my CPU OC'ing itself) and the Multiplier are still grayed out and the ration is 1.00x Everything is grayed-out and/or otherwise unchangeable. I can not make any changes. The only thing I can access and actually make change sto with a selection to choose from is the "CPU Upgrade List" but it gives me models like the 5820 and the 5930 or even the 47 and 4990K (all of those are much older than my 6850K) and there wouldn't be a need to make that adjustment unless I was stepping up my processor to begin with.....Like I did when I purchased the 6850K (in July 2016 when I bought my motherboard). Both the Motherboard and CPU were hot new tech the very week I bought them from the now defunct NCIX. I had previously owned and run the Haswell series 4770 (non K version)....in 2013, then upgraded to the 6850K in July 2016. I have never attempted to update the BIOS...becaus I have always been told "If the original Factory Default version it comes with on the day you buy it never has any problems.....Then you never need to upgrade. Stick with what works." And so I have never dabbled in stuff like BIOS updates. Sure, I can find my way around a BIOS...I know enough to make the necessary changes when first building a system...But I have never attempted to *FLASH* or Update a BIOS. This would be new territory for me, admittedly. Thanks again for all your advice. I will continue to work ont his and keep you posted if you like

Good morning all, just a few thoughts:
Your BIOS probably reset to defaults for some reason. Sometimes this happens when you unplug the electrical socket, or it could be due to ESD during installation. If your BIOS starts acting up, like resetting the date and time, it was probably a case of ESD.
About the OC, it's not so much OC as normal fluctuation. Your CPU's normal fluctuating rate during load is between 3.6 GHz and 3.8 GHz. As far as I know, your settings are normal and as they should be.
Regarding BIOS updates, the old saying applies: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I only update if something stopped working or there is a security issue. And it pays to read the changelogs.

Morning, Rewind, thanks for your post. What do you mean by ESD? And are you saying that it is perfectly normal to see the BIOS reading the CPU as 3.7 (when I did nothing to manually over clock?) yet everything about WINDOWS reads it is running at 3.6? I've never seen that. Of course I don't do manual OC'ing so I don't know anything when it comes to what is normal or not (for CPU behaviours) under these kinds of circumstances. But if you think that is the case....In all other respects it's working perfect....The Cloning Process was even better than that on Kamino So I will leave it alone and be thankful. Thanks again for your help. PS: I also chatted with reeps from Gigabyte....and thus far they have been totally useless. You all here have been of far greater help...so thank you for that.

ESD stands for Electrostatic discharge. It is a particularly common phenomenon in winter due to heating making the air so dry. And yes, it's the Intel Turbo Boost technology causing the frequency fluctuations. It is usually on by default, and it shouldn't cause any trouble, as your Intel 6850K has a base frequency of 3.6GHz and a Turbo Boost frequency of 3.8GHz. I don't think Windows shows this value anywhere, but your MB manufacturer might have a software for it. While I'm writing this, my CPU frequency varies between 1-2 GHz. No problem, always a pleasure.

Hey Rewind.....I still think something funky is going on behind th scenes, and while it isn't causing any performance issues or malfunctions-- everything is actully running perfectly fine..... It does present a mystery that I would like to solve and get to the bottom of. I don't care about the 100 Mhz OC in and of itself....But I would like to what and why it is being caused. If I could just solve that mystery, I would be happy.

I am tempted to replace my old 950 and then check all the BIOS settings with a fine-tooth comb and a magnifying glass, just to see if there are any changes that I can possibly try to recover. Because I just checked again and everything to do with the CPU Core Frequencies is either set on "AUTO" or +100, +1.0, and I am unable to change any of them. This is very strange. But again...the speed is not an issue, and it doesn't seem to causing any malfunctions so I am going to leave well enough alone and just chalk this up to an oddity that I cannot solve.

IF that doesn't fix it try reverting to the optimized defaults in the BIOS. See if you can change things then. This is beginning to sound like for some reason the OFFSET mode is running as default even over the AUTO settings. This is indeed strange.

it sounds like its running normally, most of those mobo's would auto overclock your CPU to whatever the bios defualt value was unless you specifically changed the values under manual controls....
its one of the many reasons I hated intel gear, that and their policy of declaring any overclock = you broke it you replace it yourself... you pay a premium for top of the line gear and they screw you in the aftercare, at least the AMD stuff was cheap and they didnt advertise stuff as OC ready then tell you that your bios defualt broke the warranty...
and yes the vast majority of default setups are to apply a modest overclock to your system, also utilising XMP for the ram applies a speed boost for your CPU and counts as overclocking...
just leave cpu control on manual and forget about the changes, failing that tell it to load optimised defaults and then reapply the xmp profile (optimised defaults will likely see it boost cpu speed a few more notches)

Just for giggles, I have calculated the current market cost (new or used) of the parts of my current PC build....and from what I can tell, my rig (in its original form, not including the upgrades I have made such as the RTX 2080...But rather going with the original GPU I had, the GTX 1080 FTW 2 Ultra)...and finding the rest of my parts on third party sellers such as Amazon....I have calculated that my PC has only depreciated by 1000 dollars in the 5 years I have had it.
FOr example, my Intel 6850K was originally an MSRP of 849.99 (I bought it for 825.00)....and on Amazon it is still 804.99. My DDR4 is still 235.99, my PSU is still 220.00.....so over all there hasn't been much drop in value. And, both in terms of manufacturing and performance...there really isn't all that much difference btween my platform and the newest stuff available such as the 10850K or the Z490 motherboards for prices that are equal to what I paid for my stuff when it was new in 2016.
So all in all...I can see running this platform for quite a few more years to come.

Considering the fact that I can't find most of the parts of this old seven year old AMD FX build... I have no idea how much my build has depreciated. The main parts: Antec High Current Gamer HCG-900W PSU ASUS M5A97 LE RE 2.1 Motherboard AMD FX 8370
