Any chance the Legendary Edition will be able to load career saves from the original series? (or at least respect past achievements and unlocks)?

I believe someone asked the devs about using older Mass Effect save files with the Legendary Edition, and the devs were non-committal on the subject. Meaning they did not confirm or deny that you could use old save files with the Legendary Edition. You can probably find a copy/quote of that brief question and answer somewhere in the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition thread. I would have tried to find it for you, but I just do not have time right now. sorry.

Well, I guess I had assumed had the answer could only ever be "no" or noncommittal. Even if they planned for it, they are not going to commit (because of the risk they would not be able to deliver). So I will take the absence of a definitive "no" as a hopeful response! Does that make me an optimist?

That probably does make you an optimist, yes.
Also, I checked the aforementioned thread for the post about the imports and I did not see it. So either I skipped over it, it was the wrong thread, or I misremembered the whole thing. Or else it was answered outside of these forums and I cannot remember where I saw it/heard it. Sorry, I tried. I am not going to go back through that thread again.

No worries! I did a brief search and did not see anything. Thanks for trying. I guess I'll just remain optimistic for now.

I asked the same question a while ago and got no answer, which probably means 'No' unfortunately.

Thinking out loud (writing out loud?), if the Legendary Edition handles import files or save game files the same way as the previous games in the trilogy, then you should be able to use your existing games in the Legendary Edition. If it handles them differently (different file format for example), then you will not be able to. Hopefully you will get an answer closer to release, or soon after release when players get their hands on the game.

Ideally they thought about this, and went to some effort to make compatible. For new players, no problem. But for old players (like us) the main reason to play is nostalgia, using our favorite builds. Not many will want to grind through multiple play-throughs just to rebuild all the bonus powers. If they can't make compatible, best to just unlock everything (or give option to).
