We had a recent debate about how much players were invested in ME in general and Shepard specifically.
It got me curious to know how many people gave their face to Shepard, or of someone in particular.
Personally I have 6 Shepards, but MyShep has my face, and he is the main one. My brother and sister are Shepards as well. The other three were ramdomly built. Adept Shep (the Failshep) is like Matt Damon's doll in Team America.
What about you guys?

Never customized, used default heads as in many other games. I find them to be usually much better than using many hours to get something that looks acceptable and lets be honest the other faces were horrible in ME1. Cant remember the 2 or 3 much.

I sucked at using the CC so I always made Shepard look as ugly as I possibly could. Good times.

My characters never look anything like me. I'm blonde and I ALWAYS pick dark hair.
So my canon Shep (biotic) has brown hair and purple eyes. I once tried to create myself and it kinda worked but I never used that character. Looked like 15, creeped me out, lol.
I don't understand the appeal of making characters look like the player. That's totally bizarre to me. It would completely break immersion for me. I would NEVER ever want to be a soldier. Plus, I'm so weak it's embarrassing. So self insert doesn't work for me.

First play though as default. Second play though as custom. Didn't like it and so I always use default.

Generally customised but I usually have a kind of look in mind that I want to go for. But generally I try to use celebrities or people that have a young kind of look to kind of formulate the basics of how I want my characters to lookbasically avatars that I feel look like they could fit the role for me. But then that's kind of how I roll for all my games that have CC's as I do the same in Dragon Age as well.

I mainly fine-tuned my one character who became my canon; she was fully customized. I had a couple of one-offs that I never completed, but they were custom as well.

I used default male Shep's face aka "Sheploo" Why mess with perfection? Every attempt I made at the CC gave me a clay face. Honestly, he's a perfect combo between a serious marine and classy casual. From the first cutscene I knew he was my Shep. Good job Bioware on this one.

I usually gave dude Shepard a 5 o clock shadow and usually a short military buzz cut. Also in ME1 gave him some scarring. Also picked a complexion setting that made him look a bit older. Wanted him to have the grizzled experienced soldier look. Unfortunately a look I cannot give Ryder in MEA. With femshep I usually gave her shoulder length dark hair and tried to make her attractive without going overboard on the makeup. I always found it a bit harder to get her right. Sometimes I would have to start over when she just didn't look right in the first few minutes on the normandy.

Default Shepard.
When I first played ME1 I toyed around with the character creator but didn't like how any character I made looked so I just stuck with the default, which I think looks the best anyway.
Ever since then whenever I see a video of a custom Shepard it just feels weird. "Sheploo" is Shepard to me since I usually play male Shepard.

I’ve never used the defaults.
As for custom Shepards, it depends. For more self insert ones I make them look like me. For ones based off other characters I make them look like them. And for ones based off just ideas I choose what seems most fitting.

The only game I've done self-inserts in is The Sims 3, and even there it doesn't go so well. I'm just not a self-insert type of person, I guess. I made custom Shepards (and custom protags in general) that I thought looked good. I generally go with dark hair and medium skin tones, though on subsequent playthroughs I try to force myself to branch out. So I'm the only one who never liked Sheploo's mug? Good to know, lol! Not that he's bad looking or anything, but he's not to my tastes either.

My customized Shep is in my avatar. I usually customize my protags nowadays and once I have created a version that I like, it stays the same for as many playthroughs as I do after that. So in ME I basically only have one or two custom Sheps (I think I had one before this one) and in MEA two Ryders (the first lasted only the first playthrough). I started with the default Shep though.

I typically just make Shepard look like someone that I find attractive to the best of my ability cause the CC is hard to master. I've never really gravitated toward creating game characters that look like me. In fact, I like to play as the opposite gender more often than not. Makes it easier for me to role-play and pick decisions that I might not do. Plus it gives me an excuse to romance all the characters with different personalities of Shepard.
My first Shepard was a train wreck cause I made her when I was 13. She kinda looked like an anime girl or something with huge eyes and lips. But over the years, I've gone back to edit her to be more realistic looking. I kinda picture her looking like a cross between Katee Sackhoff and maybe Charlize Theron with a dash of Billie Piper thrown in afterwards? Basically platinum blonde badass with a strong penchant for justice.
My Malesheps on the other hand are almost always average-ugly though. I think the options and sliders are just harder to manipulate for him and there are so many extreme looking features for him. The cheeks are always guess work cause you can't fully rotate their head. The best I came up with was a Maleshep that I modeled after maybe a young Samuel L Jackson mixed with Denzel Washington?

For the most part, in particular in regards to Shepard, 100% customized, 100% in game on Xbox. NONE of them are based off of me or anyone I know. The one I play as THE Shepard, is this one (whom I made on my first try, and constantly updated over the years to get him just right): I say for the most part because I have A LOT of playthroughs, and usually use the others outside my main Shepard as "Side Characters" if you will. Like in ME1 and ME3, as Hackett says backup will come later after you complete the mission (eg. Geth Incursions or all the Multiplayer maps that are also used in Single Player in 3)....well these soldiers are the backups. Basically it gave me the excuse to try out and max all all the classes lol, and I have a lil headcannon for each. One of these characters includes the default Male Shepard. I wasn't the biggest fan of FemSheps default look, including 3 (though funny enough I think it looks great on the remaster...), so I made my own redhead soldier as well based off of her look to an extent (who is basically my second most important "character" because shes the opposite of my Shepard. He's the War Hero and Savior of Elysium, She's the renegade and Butcher of Torfan). I also took advantage of ME1's equip any armor cheat, making other characters more diverse and fun, like my Engineer Now Ryder was a bit more fun in creating, only because I had envisioned what the basics of the character waaaaaayyyyy before the game came out. My Shepard was always male, so I wanted to make Ryder female (and I generally preferred her voice actor on the trailers, though both are good with the right look). I was split on color/race, because on one hand I wanted to make the character a different race (Shepard as well as myself are Black lol), yet at the same time I was always mad that there was never a Black female squadmate (and the main relevant ones of the top of my head were Giana Parasini?, Traynor, Jacob's new flame, and Maya Brooks). Choosing a different race one out because I was adamant about it, and I didn't like the fact that Alec Ryder looks like Al Sharpton all the way down to the perm ( ), so I ended up choosing a Latina/Hispanic Family. Made this Ryder, Alec, and BroRyder on the first try and only made small corrections here and there since then.

Default Male Shepard in my first playthrough across all three games in the trilogy (including default name John).
Customized face for every subsequent character. Small exception being my first FemShep (default name Jane), which I created a custom face in ME1, but then later reverted to default FemShep appearance in one of her ME2 imports (I imported her twice), then used the new default in ME3.
I never based the face off anyone, I always tried to create a somewhat-unique look for each Shepard, although most of my FemSheps used one or two specific head shapes because I did not like the others.
