Always make him look like the guy in my profile, Spacer, because it gives him family and reason to participate without it turning into a sob story. Never, ever played sole survivor since of all the stories I found it the most underwhelming one. Survived a tresher maw, one of 50, you're special for it? Spacer also explains how he is so comfortable on ships, why people just give him a ship to command, and also gives him a deeper backstory, instead of a man out for vengeance or just someone who had nothing better to do due to Earth Crime he is a man who felt the call of duty. Literally.
Always Torfan. He can be a man suffering for his decision, or a ruthless, get it done, get a 100 killed to ensure slavers never threaten anyone type of guy. War Hero is just an ocasion of circuimstances. He happened to be in such a position, and in split moment decided to do something. Torfan is planed, something he had to calculate, understand, and still make a decision on.
I could never play the default Male Shepard. He just looks too weird, almost inhuman. I know he's based on an actual model but aside from the haircut they don't look too similar.

I tried to get my main Shepard to look like my favorite female wrestler Gail Kim, but I could never got the skin tone right in ME1 and the CC was such a huge pain in ass in MET so I switched it too the default look in ME2 and outside of hair styles and colors and eye colors never bothered with the CC in MET again it was too much trouble.
I had a LOT more fun with the CC in MEA though where I did create all kinds of female Ryders.

Always custom. I always enjoy spending hours on making custom faces whenever there's an CC in a game.

For my custom Shepard, I try to make him look like a sad faced Slav but that doesn’t always carry over in the Trilogy:
My oldest M!Shep looks like he is from Eastern Europe in ME1. In ME2, he looks like he is from deep Siberia with more Asian features. I don’t know what what BioWare did in ME3, but my Shepard looks like an extremely pale Hispanic dude.
I’m not complaining too much and I like his look progression, but man what a journey.

Mshep I use Sheploo because I can't make one that doesn't look like a sentient potato.
FemShep I'll take one of the presets and slightly modify it (hair, eye colour etc)

I'd be hard pushed to make my Shepard look like me, given he's Male and I'm Female. However, he does have physical characteristics that I find attractive in the opposite Sex.

My efforts at a custom male shep failed … so went with the default, which meant no issues in ME2 or ME3.
My fem shep *might* have been a slight modification of the default, frankly don't remember … changed hair and eye color and that was about it.
Was lucky, fem shep didn't get weird when importing to ME2 and ME3 … though one of the ME3 mods caused some eye issues in two of her runs.
I suck at CC, a realization which guided me well in the MET, I was not nearly so wise in DA …
My male dwarf in DAO was so bad, if he'd been a Mabari, I'd have shaved his butt and made him walk backwards … Morrigan, really?
DAI wasn't much better … it would be a real test to see if he had a face only a mother could love … and Cassandra, WTH were you thinking?
Amazingly enough, my Ryders turned out OK … except for male Ryder's hair style … there were no good options.

For the most part, in particular in regards to Shepard, 100% customized, 100% in game on Xbox. NONE of them are based off of me or anyone I know. The one I play as THE Shepard, is this one (whom I made on my first try, and constantly updated over the years to get him just right): I say for the most part because I have A LOT of playthroughs, and usually use the others outside my main Shepard as "Side Characters" if you will. Like in ME1 and ME3, as Hackett says backup will come later after you complete the mission (eg. Geth Incursions or all the Multiplayer maps that are also used in Single Player in 3)....well these soldiers are the backups. Basically it gave me the excuse to try out and max all all the classes lol, and I have a lil headcannon for each. One of these characters includes the default Male Shepard. I wasn't the biggest fan of FemSheps default look, including 3 (though funny enough I think it looks great on the remaster...), so I made my own redhead soldier as well based off of her look to an extent (who is basically my second most important "character" because shes the opposite of my Shepard. He's the War Hero and Savior of Elysium, She's the renegade and Butcher of Torfan). I also took advantage of ME1's equip any armor cheat, making other characters more diverse and fun, like my Engineer Now Ryder was a bit more fun in creating, only because I had envisioned what the basics of the character waaaaaayyyyy before the game came out. My Shepard was always male, so I wanted to make Ryder female (and I generally preferred her voice actor on the trailers, though both are good with the right look). I was split on color/race, because on one hand I wanted to make the character a different race (Shepard as well as myself are Black lol), yet at the same time I was always mad that there was never a Black female squadmate (and the main relevant ones of the top of my head were Giana Parasini?, Traynor, Jacob's new flame, and Maya Brooks). Choosing a different race one out because I was adamant about it, and I didn't like the fact that Alec Ryder looks like Al Sharpton all the way down to the perm ( ), so I ended up choosing a Latina/Hispanic Family. Made this Ryder, Alec, and BroRyder on the first try and only made small corrections here and there since then. Your Shepard is good, but your Ryder is lit as fuck. A very human face, believable.

I have nothing against default male Shepard, but he's a bit too generic looking to me. How many games are we going to get a burly, Caucasian, bearded guy with buzzed hair before it gets old?
I make my own character and I base it on myself. Obviously, I'll never get a complete likeness, but as close as I can. I was in the military, I like space, and I also nearly died (and have hardware put into me) so I can relate to Shepard. It makes runs feel more personal rather than it happening to some guy I'm playing. Also, my race is barely represented, if at all in gaming. So if I can play as myself, then I'm going to do that.
Lastly, despite my male Shepards not having the same level of detail as default male Shepard, I think one of them turned out pretty well.

I always go with custom made characters, in RPG's customization of the protagonist is so important for me to feel immersed that I flat out refuse to play games that don't allow me to design my own character, like for example Witcher. When I create my characters I don't follow any specific self-imposed rules, I just mess around with the CC until they feel right. Though sometimes my male character shares some features of my real self. For reference sake, here are my two Ryders:

While I don't share your distaste for pregenerated main characters, if someone asked me to significantly reduce my game library, I would definitely choose to keep as many of my custom character titles as possible.

I shattered most of the bones below the knee. The doctor's words that still stick in my head all the years later are "swimming bone fragments." Titanium rods kept them in place as I healed and they are still there. I'm fully recovered now thankfully.

Yeah I don't really dislike predetermined characters though I will say games that do tend to go down that route do tend to be less buggy whereas there does tend to be more bugs when it comes to games that do use CC's. But I agree having a CC does give us a greater freedom to roleplay. It's one of the main reasons why ME and DA are among my favourite games.

Come to think of it, I never customized Ryder. I bought MEA on sale, morbid curiosity took me, I was done with EA/BW at this point. So I never took the time to fiddle with the CC. Looks like its an evolution of the original one.

I just randomly slap together facial features until it looks alright, if they happen to look like someone then it's pure coincidence I'm not the type of person to try and recreate themselves (mostly because I can never get my nose right) or someone famous, though I've huge respect for people that do

I don't make anyone in particular. In every game with a character creator I usually remove everything 'extra' (hair, make up if applicable, tattoos, etc) then sculpt the face until it's something I like. Add hair, resculpt if necessary, add other extra's, resculpt if necessary and then... I mess around with the skin colour and the whole cycle might repeat Looking at my old screenshots of ME though, I either got a lot better at creation or the ME character creator was just shit. Probably both, as ME was the first game where I really started enjoying customizing characters. Also the first game I chose to play a female. I find making and playing female characters very pleasing, something the younger me had never thought.
