Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for Bethesda Softworks as part of the Xbox Team at Microsoft.bethesda.net/en/article/193piE646914YSCGpeYxGC/bethesda-xbox-just-getting-startedWhile you might have thought this already happened following last year's announcement, it is only now becoming official as the deal has passed the requisite regulatory approvals and been signed. If you haven’t had a chance to read what Phil Spencer, Todd Howard, and I wrote in our posts when we announced our plans last year, you should take a moment to read them each, as well as Phil’s Xbox Wire post today. First, let me say that we’re not making any landmark announcements or changes right now. As we’ve all shared, the expectation is that Bethesda Softworks and our studios will continue as we have in the past, just with more support and resources than we’ve ever had before. Obviously, Game Pass has been an important initiative for Xbox, and we’ll be working on putting even more of our games into Game Pass than ever before. Beyond that? Stay tuned, we’re just getting started together. Second, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that it is a bittersweet day given that our founder, Robert Altman, passed away last month. Among his many admirable qualities was the incredible spirit of family and loyalty that he shared with all of us. I will be forever grateful for his efforts to find the perfect place for ZeniMax, Bethesda, and our studios and employees to continue their excellent work going forward. I’d also like to thank Phil Spencer and all the folks at Xbox and Microsoft who have been such a pleasure to work with as we prepare for this new chapter. The collaboration, mutual respect, and support they’ve shown to us during this process has been extraordinary. I’m pleased to continue the great relationships we’ve built together over the past few decades, first as partners and now as colleagues in the same company. And of course, I want to say thanks to all of you for your support. It is not something we ever take lightly or for granted. This year marks 35 years since the original creation of Bethesda Softworks. Reaching a milestone like that, while also going through a historic occasion like this acquisition, puts in perspective just how far we’ve come in that time. A journey that wouldn’t be worth it without all of you to share it with.

Hopefully Microsoft will whip Bethesda into shape and we'll finally get a Fallout/Elder Scrolls games that are not buggy messes. 😒 (And hopefully we'll get an update for Fallout 4 that'll fix the F🤬🤬king crashes whenever you explore Downtown Boston! 😠) I am skeptical they can really make any changes to fix those games that have been released if the core issues are what I believe to be from the game engine itself. Just like I don't think they are going to be moving away from the Creation Engine until after Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield have been released if they are deep into development of them already. For it would be a lot of work to pretty much learn a new engine and potentially starting over.

Makes sense to give a new Fallout game to Obsidian for example. What I am curious to see is if Microsoft decides to keep a bunch of the Bethesda IPs as Xbox/PC exclusives. On one side that will lose a lot of money from the certain PS sales for Fallout and ES. On the other side it will be a delicious "screw you" to Sony's "exclusivity" shenanigans.

I'm actually looking forward to the partnership, Zenimax sucked overseeing Bethesda and I'm hoping Microsoft puts more quality control towards how Bethesda runs. I know Bethesda has the reputation as "Bugthesda" for a reason (their games were still super fun though 👍) and maybe Microsoft can help Change that while restoring some trust into Bethesda after how Fallout 76 went.
I am also expecting an engine change because it's needed, the sooner the better would be nice as well. It's probably to late for some of the current projects in the works but maybe a year or two? Who knows

Pretty doubtful that Obsidian will make the next Fallout game but Microsoft could inject some new life in Bethesda as they continue recover from the Fallout 76 fiasco.

Who knows I would temper expectations. According to Bethesda, Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 will be using an overhauled version of its Creation Engine. We can make a better assessment of how good or bad that is when Starfield is released, but needless to say, don’t expect a departure from that for the foreseeable future.

He also talked about having prior contracts and having to honor those as well as "in the future" ... there may be things that have "legacy on different platforms that we'll go do."

- Existing contractual obligations (eg. Ghostwire Tokyo & Deathloop) will be fulfilled on all platforms. - Games already on other platforms will continue to be supported (eg. Elder Scrolls Online & Fallout 76). - New games however will be exclusive to Game Pass platforms (eg. Starfield, Elder Scrolls 6, Indiana Jones, etc.).
