The faith and beliefs of the dwarves, those of Orzammar anyway:
I did not bring up the “gangue” in my legion of the dead video, because I did not think it was fully consistent with the rest of their lore and wasn’t sure what to make of it. I did bring it up here, because I’ve been thinking.
In regards to the oddity of Maric and the legionnaires he persuaded to fight Orlais with him, I’ve speculated that maybe the developers originally intended the Legion to be more generally focused on finding a valorous death rather than being darkspawn specific. That led me to wonder, what if the Legion predates the darkspawn? In that case, maybe seeking out and destroying the gangue was their original purpose.
Further thoughts: currently it’s speculated that the dwarves originally lacked emotions before Mythal somehow tied them to the fade when the Evanuris sought to conquer the Titans. What if this fight against the gangue is a cultural echo of that war? Purging the Stone of spiritual influences, the influence of the Fade. The Sha-Brytol are driven by a similar obsession with purity in protecting the Titans. The root of both these things may be the same, an ancient desire to protect the Stone, or the Titans, from the influence of the Fade.

Thanks for another informative video. Do we ever see gangue in any of the games? I can't remember doing so, but I guess if red lyrium is corrupted 'blood', then gangue must be corrupted 'flesh'. Where would Malvernis from DA 2 Legacy fit into this theory, I wonder?
Anyway, keep up the good work - you're doing the hobby a great service.

It only ever came up with the Legion of the Dead armor quest in DAO. The “gangue” was basically a shade with boss stats. Supposedly it’s a demon literally locked within the Stone itself. There’s also a reference to the gangue in the Hissing Wastes in DAI, I don’t remember which codex but it was in reference to those stone pillars that unlock the story of Karl Repartha. If you select the pillars in the wrong order, demons are summoned. malvernis was unique, he never seems to have been sealed in the Stone so I don’t think he would be gangue, just a very dangerous monster.
