Personally I'd rather the fireteam selection menu not have dialogue. I think it's better if this is limited to special occasions where you're actually selecting your team in a cutscene, similarly to the Suicide Mission.

That was funny
I try.
BioWare could have some fun with it.
Skip four missions in a row with a potential squadmate? Pretty easy. But 16 in a row? Unless you dislike a character, probably won't happen with most of your squadmates.
So ... an achievement for getting all four of the character-unique whines from five different squadmates ... probably require a couple of plays through.
The name of the achievement?
No Whine Before Its TimeTM ... a platinum achievement, of course.

BioWare would probably call it Benchwarmer.

The comments by squadmates when picking a fireteam leader was nice and depending on who is recruited, different comments are heard So ... an achievement for getting all four of the character-unique whines from five different squadmates ... probably require a couple of plays through.

Ha. That would be alright. I would add another trophy to match that. Here. Have a drink - When a squadmate whines, Ryder can give a baby bottle to the squadmate if the right dialogue is chosen. excellent

But surely, there weren't companions people never took with them?

But surely, there weren't companions people never took with them? Playing ME2 at the time of posting. Zaeed, Tali and Thane immediately come to mind, outside of missions they're required for.

Jacob, Jack, and Thane were my benchwarmers.
I always took Zaeed, Miranda, and Garrus.
To answer the question, yes it would be nice if they had a short "whine" phrase when not taken out for several missions.

But surely, there weren't companions people never took with them? There are missions that I've never taken squadmates on, but overall, I can't say never especially in ME2 since squadmates were required for their loyalty mission. I do have a least used squadmate list. It would be Tali, Jacob, edibot, Liara, Garrus, Legion, Thane, Kasumi, Grunt, Wrex, Garrus, Samara, Jack, Mordin

mmm... the benchwarmers... i used in ME1: Garrus+Wrex ME2: Garrus+Thane/Zaeed ME3: Garrus+Liara (i need that singularity for my warp!) Why do i keep using Garrus?! well... as for the benchwarmers... everybody that i didn't mention. And about the main topic, those are the little details that make a game great.

But surely, there weren't companions people never took with them? That would only be most of them, particularly in 2 and 3. ME1- Usually took whoever I was romancing at the time, and Wrex or Garrus. Often Liara and Ashley regardless. Kaidan especially, gathered dust until reduced to dust. ME2- Miranda and Kasumi except for loyalty missions or certain special situations (like taking Legion to the Migrant Fleet). If squadmates had or should have, interesting dialogue related to a mission, I'd take them. Or if I had multiple missions on one planet. Tuchanka for example has always been Grunt and Mordin for both. They both have business there, one less shuttle trip to get everything done. ME3- Javik and EDI usually. Sometimes Liara. Otherwise to the OP, that video reminds me of Diablo II's character select. And yes, I would be down for generic comments for selection/deselection. Though maybe not with such extreme reactions on deselections. I was expecting the equivalent of "aww, damn" not "son of a bitch!"

I really enjoyed how they did that in DAO. It was short and sweet, but added alot. And as was mentioned, the little lines companions would say when they either fell in battle or revived were so funny.
Even DA2 they at least jostled about. They didn't say anything, but they moved around. I like that kind of detail. I miss that kind of stuff.
ME never had that, though.
