For those of you who've played DAO, the companion made a comment when chosen for a quest and even had a movement. Each one was unique Would something like that be of interest for folks to have in the game?

It's not a deal breaker or even a top 100 issue for me, but... Sure, it was a fun little touch. Actually (and this might make me a sadistic asshat), I was more amused by their whining when you deselected them again.

Or whine at non-selection, like in the Citadel DLC ...
After 4th consecutive non-selection for a mission, a character will whine ... in a manner appropriate for that character.
After 8th consecutive non-selection for a mission ... a new, more strident whine ... again, new whines for 12th and 16th missions passed over.
I would target character(s), on a given Ryder run, to not be selected, just to hear the whines ... assuming they were funny, done well.
And Tali could have stayed drunk throughout the trilogy, using her "emergency induction port" to sip all the Turian whine from Garrus.
Of course, that could explain the whole concept behind the "Drunk Turian Sentinel" ...
*oh, hai DR, I didn't see you there ... umm, lurking ... and what am I doing here? uh, nothing much, I was just ... leaving*

Any companion's comment in any situation is a good thing. But ME never had that feature, did it?

If voice acting is on a limited budget, I'd rather they skip this sort of feature (i.e. voices and actions inside the selection screen) and put in more meaningful squad banter on missions and/or more NPC banter going on about the ship... which could even include whining about not being selected for a previous mission or bragging about being "Ryder's favorite" based on who the player habitually selects or doesn't select.

I liked it. It was a cute feature that I would not be mad to see return, either to Mass Effect or Dragon Age.
As an aside, I just hope that the squad selection interface is good generally. Unless I'm completely oblivious (which, granted, is quite possible!) there was no way in DA:I to cancel party selection once you were in there; you were forced to travel. I got caught by that a few times at the War Table, where I hit "Travel Now" and then remembered I'd forgotten to clean my inventory and wanted to cancel, but couldn't seem to. Super annoying.

I wouldn't necessarily mind, but I'd place a higher priority on them having plenty of ambient, mission related comments after the scene begins.

As long as they did it in an appropriate science fiction context. DAO was kind of contrived -- I mean, where are they standing? The Fade?
For example, Ryder (player) touches the ship-wide comm button and says, "Pop, Wrexine, Hamburglar to the Tempest dock!" Then each responds in turn with a 1 in 20 randomly selected answer.
Pop: "Acknowledged." (cuz N7's would be all military style)
Wrexine: "It's clobberin' time!" (who knows, maybe female krogan's say that?)
Hamburglar: "What, now? I just washed my tentacles!"

The more little things like that included the better the experience imo. I'd dare say to go farther where including team members on missions gains approval and exclusion results in disapproval.

THUNDERHUMPER! I really liked this feature. It's so small and I imagine takes very little to implement but I always enjoyed it. I liked how their animations differed as well. It's not that big a deal whether they include it or not, but it's one of those fun touches that I always appreciated in Origins and Awakening. It's the exception rather than the norm when it comes to BioWare games though - KOTOR, ME and the Dragon Age sequels were all just static. I liked it in Origins though, it's a small way to make the characters seem more alive.

Sort of a related question, should we be able to change our squad mates on the fly (any time out of combat)? My memory is a bit hazy but there have been some Bio games where we can and some where we can't. I try not to do it because I find it breaks immersion but at the same time allowing it makes it incredibly tempting where you can do something more efficiently.

Not a bad idea. The only thing is on the 4th or 8th run, I'd probably get annoyed with the whining if a squadmate isn't chosen for a mission

As long as they do not repeat the same line each time I highlight them. This could be a golden opportunity for an "easter egg". For example, if I select a team member, than deselect them after multiple times, one could say "well, which is it?"

My memory is a bit hazy but there have been some Bio games where we can and some where we can't. I try not to do it because I find it breaks immersion but at the same time allowing it makes it incredibly tempting where you can do something more efficiently. Ideally I think it should be as flexible as possible, within reason. If a player starts a mission and suddenly thinks, "ah, it would have been nice to have X companion here instead", it would be nice to be able to swap out on the spot, as long as it's outwith combat. Anything that provides the player with extra choice usually gets a thumbs up from me. If a player doesn't want to do it because they feel it breaks immersion, they don't have to, but it would be nice for the choice to be there. Having said that, I'd understand if the option to swap became locked out in certain circumstances - in missions where there is a sense that you really couldn't go back, or had passed a 'point of no return' sort of thing. But in general, especially when exploring, I think we should be given the option. I'm trying to remember how previous BioWare games did it. KOTOR had the most freedom, I think. You could pretty much swap any time out of combat. Origins was leaving camp or in certain open areas, Inquisition had the party camps on each map...It's the ME games that are more restrictive. Once you've chosen your party for a map or mission, you're pretty much stuck.

Why not! I also really liked how in DAII companions would mutter cute/funny lines when going down/getting revived. Some of that stuff cracked me up even after many repeats.
Banter: Dragon Age > Mass Effect

The first thing I would be absolutely delighted about would be the complete absence of software malfunctions in regards to playing companion related audio files. No frigging banter bug again, mkay?
Comments - or maybe just gestures depending on their character and feelings towards the protagonist - would be a nice touch. Maybe we could pick our crew in an actual briefing room after the mission has been explained instead of some simple selection screen. Immersion and such.
Switching companions during a mission should only happen where it makes sense. If you'd have to ferry them from and back to orbit to change your party it would get a bit ridiculous.
