Anders is the same, as he was in Awakening PLUS Justice. His every reaction are the same – the only difference: he doesn't think he can do anything against a whole system. If you watch the Awakening and bring him everywhere, especially with Justice – you'll see he never stops to complain about the mages. I see Anders/Justice is a surprisingly consistent character – especially seeing the circumstances (different writer, short time).
Also: his reaction to the word: "apostate":
But you're right about I also want to see another "street-level" story what takes years. (Sorry, I just saw a little part, when I have more time, I'll continue.)

Also: his reaction to the word: "apostate": I can definitely see that baseline similarity in attitude towards the plight of mages, but the change in outlook still feels jarring... and frankly he was just less fun to me when he stopped cracking jokes and became a walking chip on the shoulder. I think his spiral into bombing a Chantry could have been handled better too.

I think his spiral into bombing a Chantry could have been handled better too. I can see, it seems a "quick" change – but he didn't get Justice in little doses, but as a whole. He's already Justice as well, and Justice was never a jokester. Okay, Justice changes too, just as Anders with the time, circumstances etc. But I see their personality in one – causes such change. And why would Anders be a jokester here? The circumstances changed: his ex-lover died by his hand, he sees more injustice in Kirkwall – and while he had a great sense of justice even before, he's more sensitive about those, because of Justice's presence. AND: we can experience during the game, he has his humour, not once he shows. But he doesn't have to use it any more to cover his anger, and probably he doesn't want... – and according to my explanation: to be a charming jokester some survival tool in the Circle (he says to Fenris, when Fenris asks him: why the Templars didn't kill him: "I'm charming" – and I don't think, this is just a simple joke). Sometimes his humour shining – just he doesn't feel, he should be sparkling always. Not that bad: sometimes I felt Anders overwhelming in DAA... I think, this part of the writing – not bad at all.

Given how much the writers ended up changing Anders, sometimes I wonder if it would have been better to create a new character to be their "Mage-neto".

Given how much the writers ended up changing Anders, sometimes I wonder if it would have been better to create a new character to be their "Mage-neto". "Mageneto" is good! But I think, he was simply perfect for this role. Much better than Velanna (she was also planned in an early phase) or any new character would be. One problem is: his timeline a bit messed up – but this also can be applied to Justice. Not absolutely impossible, but very tight.
