I do not know what's wrong with me, but I'm getting sick of it. Ever since MELE's release, I've been starting ME1 over and over again. I'm continuously taking one step forward and two steps back, all because I'm not satisfied with the character. I'm constantly going back and forth between Default and Custom FemShep. I keep switching over to Default FemShep because her face looks better than any face I put together no matter how much effort I put into it. I switch back to Custom because I worry about my Shepard not being special compared to other Sheps, yet so many other players use default Shep and don't seem to care. I want that sense of confidence. I'm a one Shepard person. Whatever decision I make is supposed to be final. This morning bI deleted my default Shepard through impulse in an attempt to make yet another custom one, only to have second thoughts out of nowhere and feel complete regret. Deleted that one, and now I'm without a Shepard again. The PS5 doesn't save data to the cloud properly. This is a goddamn nightmare. Who would have thought I'd go through this with a game I was so excited to play...I don't know what to do anymore. I've made it a habit of restarting, what will end up becoming the next excuse...This has made me mentally exhausted.

Embrace your Shepard's imperfections. My Shepard seemed a bit off when I made her but it has worked out great for me because it fits her oddball renegon personality. Stop stressing out about making the perfect Shepard and just enjoy the game

I think I got a pretty good look now. We'll see how she imports into 3.

Ever since she was revealed for MELE, I considered the idea of using that face from now on. I feel like me making a custom face is part of Mass Effect of the past. Now that her face from ME3 is now available in all three games. I no longer have a reason to make a different face, especially if I don't have a problem with how the default face looks. I just worry about the fact that so many other players use the same face, so what makes mine ao unique?

It's hard to make the "perfect" looking Shepard and to make them unique as well. But an imperfect Shepard is one you can take ownership of and make it yours. My Shepard is dark around the eyes and has an odd looking skin tone. At times in ME2 she looked like a zombie and in ME3 she sometimes looks cross-eyed. At other times she looks pretty good. She is one of my more memorable Shepards.

I wasn't aware of the Pageant.
When is it?
...
I appreciate that you want your Shepard to represent your vision for her. Let that be what worries you, the other stuff is what the kids call cringe I believe.

Stop stressing out about making the perfect Shepard and just enjoy the game Yeah. As far as esthetics go, a visually imperfected characters can grow on you sometimes: Years ago I tried to make a Samantha Traynor on vanilla Mass Effect 2 (I bet I'm not the only one ^^). I took my sweet time but then the result was not 100% faithful: first I botched her neck which was way too thin, then you can't adjust the height of FemShep/MaleShep who's taller than Traynor, finally her face had an inquisitive look which made her much more aggressive. It doesn't help that the start of ME2 had a strange lighting that made your character look awful wathever the settings (it gets better when you leave the first level). I ended up loving her style anyway because she stood out from from any character I made before. Same deal for a particular MaleShep: I wanted a scarred warrior who would look like he had seen way too much in his life. In the end I made a guy who looked distantly related to...Udina. (I erased that one ^^).

I wonder if this is all stemming from the possibility that deep down I feel a sense of nostalgia when thinking about my once "Canon" Shepard (Male Shepard, Default Face, named after me, Spacer, War Hero, Vanguard, mostly Paragon, and Miranda as the Love Interest), but I haven't done that scenario since PS3, and that was almost a decade ago. Is that what this is? Some weird longing to back to my roots? Do I miss feeling like I am Shepard, or in his shoes? I admit I felt a bit of a disconnect with FemShep even in the passed couple of years. I'm not against strong female leads (I worry that people might think that of me). I'm not all for that "bros before hoes" mentality. I want to get that out of the way right now. I want to play games like Horizon Zero Dawn, and I want to pick a female character in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. It's just that with Mass Effect, it's different, and I can't explain why. Maybe because he was my Shepard first? Were the decisions I made reflect my personal feelings during certain situations? Idk

Technically speaking to make a good-looking character in any game you have to know what makes a face 'attractive' generally speaking. Usually, those characteristics are high cheekbones, angular jaw, a thin nose (even if it's hooked or not), brows that are lower, eyes that are closer together, and full lips. Do that, and then tweak the face to what you personally find attractive. If you don't feel connected to your Shepard, you definitely will not enjoy any play-through.
Also, you can either play Shepard and make them do what you would do, or you can RP what your Shepard would do in your own canon. Both are fine, but you have to stick with one or the other. Just like you have to stick to either mostly Paragon or mostly Renegade.

Lol I think a decent looking mouth is one of the hardest things to pull off for custom femsheps. Yep, mine definitely has duck lips from the side. Is that what this is? Some weird longing to back to my roots? Maybe. Have you tried a default mShep in MELE yet, to see if you'll feel that connection? Maybe you don't need uniqueness if you can connect to the character. I admit I felt a bit of a disconnect with FemShep even in the passed couple of years. It's just that with Mass Effect, it's different, and I can't explain why. I get it. I can't make myself create a male Hawke, but my favorite Inquisitor is male. Sometimes there is something about a certain protagonist that draws you toward one gender or another. If you just aren't feeling femshep, then go with a male so you can stop stressing and start enjoying the game.

I've had the same problem when starting with the Legendary Edition. I restarted over 10 times because I wasn't satisfied with my Shep's face. After the final restart, I realised that seeking the perfect face for my Shep was futile.
Instead, I decided to make a completely different playthrough. I went in and made a completely different looking Shep then the one I had intended. Like he looks nothing like the previous attempts - I also ended up going for a mostly renegade playthrough.
It's part of the reason my playthrough feels fresh, I don't feel like I'm burdened with doing everything the right way because I'm not playing my 'canon' Shep. I'm not saying this is the solution, but maybe what you need is to change things up as well. Maybe make a different looking character, or switch the gender or play a different class.
Either way, stressing out over the perfect Shep is just going to keep you from what is really important - enjoying the game.

My malesheps were easier to be done than femsheps. It doesn't help that her body is not of a fit soldier, it breaks my immersion sometimes.
My rule of thumb for femsheps was to make necks a little bit wider and eyebrows a little bit thicker than what I think was optimal.

Funny I always made my femsheps with smaller necks to counteract the "giraffe neck" effects she had.
