This may be a stupid question, but bear with me. I'm honestly not trolling.
In all the years I've repayed ME:2 I've never bothered with fish, as I kept forgetting to feed them between missions and they died.
This time I'm determined to keep the little blighters alive, and have bought all the available fish.
The issue is - I recall that the Overlord DLC actually gives mission complete screens after each base - and, as we all know, the fish die if unfed after completing any mission outside the Normandy, meaning you're effectively completing a mission but unable to go back to the Normandy.
So, will all my fish end up floating belly-up in the tank when I get back?

No, they should remain alive. Fish will only die if you board the Normandy but don't go to the Cabin to feed them before leaving again.

Ah, I see. I was thinking that it was dependent upon completing any mission outside the Normandy, after which you had a limited time to feed the fish upon returning to the ship.

I just defer buying my fish until after I get Kelly to commit to looking after them. To do that, flirt with her during your first conversation (using the "I'd embrace you" line). Tell her that you like her flirting with you during her second conversation. After you recruit Garrus, talk with her and tell her that her therapy sounds good. At that point she should say something about setting aside some time to really talk and get to know each other. Then, after you get Samara, flirt with her again and invite her to your cabin for dinner. The next morning, she'll offer to look after your fish... whether you have any fish or not.
After that point is when I start buying fish and I never have to worry about feeding them. It's probably more "canon" to let a couple of groups of fish die, though since there are quips about Shepard killing fish during the Citadel DLC. The only fish you really need to save are the Prejak Paddle Fish (since they give an extra upgrade at Liara's terminal if they make it into ME3). However, a full aquarium looks nicer.
In ME3, I make sure to buy the Aquarium VI as soon as I get the fish back from Kelly (or if I buy new ones in ME3). It costs 25,000 credits.

I would assume they stay alive. I always do overlord late in my playthroughs anyway and at that point Kelly is feeding my fish for me.

Yeah I know about flirting with Kelly, but to be honest I never do that as I prefer to keep my relationships professional aboard the Cerberus vessel.

Yeah I know about flirting with Kelly, but to be honest I never do that as I prefer to keep my relationships professional aboard the Cerberus vessel. Understandable. I sometimes do that as well... but then I'll usually lose a batch of fish or two because I simply forget to feed them. The point I often seem to lose them is when the 5-mission time runs out and I'm whisked away to the Collector Ship, so be sure to feed them before hitting the CIC after you've finished the 5th mission after Horizon.
I would hold off buying the Prejak Paddle fish until the very end of the playthrough so that they carry over into ME3 and you can still get the associated bonus even if you do lose some batches of fish earlier in the game.

Can confirm they stay alive. Did overlord two days ago and breathed a sigh of relief that they were still alive.

I would feed the fish before starting the dlc. When the dlc is completed, the fish are still alive.

You could romance kelly, but well... who wants to do that anymore since she doesn't look like kelly anymore You don't have to romance her... just flirt a few times... and I think she still looks good enough for that. I admit she's different than the "old Kelly" but she's still pretty cute. She's got one of the better faces in ME2... some of the NPC's look really bad. Bailey, the looters in the apartment on Omega, and the couple in the other apartment had god awfully long chins on them. A lot of them look like they just finished drinking a glass of milk as well.

DLC Overlord can be finished before crew abduction in addition with Legion's LM. No deaths among the crew. Seems this DLC is simply like one mission only longer. Then, after you get Samara, flirt with her again and invite her to your cabin for dinner. Can just get Samara after CC - the dialogue will be a bit different but with the same outcome (if you pick right phrases).

I don't understand what you mean by "after CC?" Do you mean the Collector Ship mission, perhaps? I am aware that Samara's recruitment can take place at any time after the Horizon mission (including after the Collector Ship mission). I cannot take place before the Horizon mission, so the earliest you can get Kelly's invite to dinner is after you recruit Samara after the Horizon mission. Are you saying if you wait long enough or perhaps even don't recruit Samara at all, then you still eventually get a dinner invite? I've never tested that specific scenario, so I don't know.

Yes, Collector Ship/Cruiser/Vessel. Are you saying if you wait long enough or perhaps even don't recruit Samara at all, then you still eventually get a dinner invite? I've never tested that specific scenario, so I don't know. "Fish" conversation happens after CC as well only in this case Kelly says something like "EDI brought you back, I would give her a hug for this", and Shepard just answers "I am right here, where is my hug". After Kelly says usual lines about "getting better" and the dinner follows. After getting Samara there is only Kelly's description of Samara (usual lines), where Shepard can flirt, but already without dinner invitation. After dinner flirtation does not matter for fish.

Seriously, you have a AI on your ship. It's not possible for EDI to set a bloody timer or something for your fish?

Seriously, you have a AI on your ship. It's not possible for EDI to set a bloody timer or something for your fish? When you first board Normandy, EDI explains that she cannot interact with ship systems beyond the defense related ones she lists. It's only after Joker unshackles her that she gains access to environmental systems and the helm. So, I honestly believe that she couldn't look after the fish until after the crew abductions and, by then, Kelly is probably looking after them. Of course, it doesn't explain why they die if Kelly dies during the SM.

Yah well mistakes were made and did the IFF mission way too early. My fish died and Kelly was turned to goo as I did a lot of other things sooo...
I had to buy new fish and now doing Overlord. If I find them belly up in the tank I will feed them to the space hamster.

After all, in ME2, you can buy the feeder VI (for frigging 25.000 credits). We have 4 top notch engineers on this ship. Is the implication here really that none of them are competent enough to wire up a stupid automated fish feeder?

Perhaps it's that Shepard never asks them to try to do anything. Maybe he/she is really just unaware that fish need to be fed. Kelly is the one who offers in ME2.

I know we could buy one in ME3 but... ME2? Where? It's the shop in the Presidium near Barla Von... can't remember the name though.
